Pharmacists who refuse to provide certain services or treatment for reasons of conscience have been criticized for failing to fulfil their professional obligations. Currently, individual pharmacists in Great Britain can withhold services or treatment for moral or religious reasons, provided they refer the patient to an alternative source. The most high‐profile cases have concerned the refusal to supply emergency hormonal contraception, which will serve as an example in this article. I propose that the pharmacy profession's policy on conscientious objections should be altered slightly. Building on the work of Brock and Wicclair, I argue that conscientious refusals should be acceptable provided that the patient is informed of the service, the patient is redirected to an alternative source, the refusal does not cause an unreasonable burden to the patient, and the reasons for the refusal are based on the core values of the profession. Finally, I argue that a principled categorical refusal by an individual pharmacist is not morally permissible. I claim that, contrary to current practice, a pharmacist cannot legitimately claim universal exemption from providing a standard service, even if that service is available elsewhere.  相似文献

In spite of the large number of studies on genome size, studies comparing genome size and growth‐related traits across a wider range of species from the same habitat, taking into account species phylogeny, are largely missing. I estimated the relationship between genome size and different seed and seedling traits in perennial herbs occurring in dry calcareous grasslands in northern Bohemia, Czech Republic. There was no relationship between genome size and plant traits in simple regression analyses, but several strong relationships emerged in analyses based on pairwise phylogenetically independent contrasts. There was a significant relationship between monoploid genome size and production of above‐ground biomass, seedling establishment success and seed weight and between holoploid genome size and seed dormancy. Because the results are based on phylogenetically independent contrasts over a range of species from the same type of habitat, they allow me to conclude that these patterns were not because of species group or habitat type, but really show a correlation with genome size. In contrast to previous studies, I found a higher number of relationships with monoploid than with holoploid genome size. This may be because the traits observed in this study are directly related to plant growth and thus to life‐cycle time, which is determined by monoploid genome size. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 160 , 290–298.  相似文献

Many animal lineages exhibit allometry in sexual size dimorphism (SSD), known as ‘Rensch’s rule’. When applied to the interspecific level, this rule states that males are more evolutionary plastic in body size than females and that male‐biased SSD increases with body size. One of the explanations for the occurrence of Rensch’s rule is the differential‐plasticity hypothesis assuming that higher evolutionary plasticity in males is a consequence of larger sensitivity of male growth to environmental cues. We have confirmed the pattern consistent with Rensch’s rule among species of the gecko genus Paroedura and followed the ontogeny of SSD at three constant temperatures in a male‐larger species (Paroedura picta). In this species, males exhibited larger temperature‐induced phenotypic plasticity in final body size than females, and body size and SSD correlated across temperatures. This result supports the differential‐plasticity hypothesis and points to the role phenotypic plasticity plays in generating of evolutionary novelties.  相似文献

Glomus intraradices, an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), is frequently found in a surprisingly wide range of ecosystems all over the world. It is used as model organism for AMF and its genome is being sequenced. Despite the ecological importance of AMF, little has been known about their population structure, because no adequate molecular markers have been available. In the present study we analyse for the first time the intraspecific genetic structure of an AMF directly from colonized roots in the field. A recently developed PCR‐RFLP approach for the mitochondrial rRNA large subunit gene (mtLSU) of these obligate symbionts was used and complemented by sequencing and primers specific for a particularly frequent mtLSU haplotype. We analysed root samples from two agricultural field experiments in Switzerland and two semi‐natural grasslands in France and Switzerland. RFLP type composition of G. intraradices (phylogroup GLOM A‐1) differed strongly between agricultural and semi‐natural sites and the G. intraradices populations of the two agricultural sites were significantly differentiated. RFLP type richness was higher in the agricultural sites compared with the grasslands. Detailed sequence analyses which resolved multiple sequence haplotypes within some RFLP types even revealed that there was no overlap of haplotypes among any of the study sites except between the two grasslands. Our results demonstrate a surprisingly high differentiation among semi‐natural and agricultural field sites for G. intraradices. These findings will have major implications on our views of processes of adaptation and specialization in these plant/fungus associations.  相似文献

Abstract We investigated the effectiveness of short mitochondrial DNA fragments for the identification of lycid larvae. The rrnL, cox1 and nad5 mtDNA sequences from 17 specimens of immature stages of Lycidae and Lampyridae were combined with a previously published dataset of homologous fragments representing all major lineages of Lycidae and outgroups. Their relationships were analysed under parsimony criteria. We demonstrate that high‐density profiles are necessary for accurate identification of unknown samples to generic and tribal levels and that a multilocus approach is critical for obtaining reliable results. Although widely used, the cox1 mtDNA fragment showed the worst performance for identification at genus level when the query species was not present in the library. Stronger support for deeper branches came from rrnL mtDNA. The neotenic female larvae and male adult stages of Platerodrilus sp. and Macrolibnetis depressus Pic, 1938 were associated by mtDNA fragments. Based on the present identification, larvae of Dictyopterini (Dictyopterini gen. sp., Dictyoptera aurora Herbst, 1784), Sulabanus sp., Leptotrichalus sp. (Metriorrhynchini) and Macrolibnetis depressus Pic, 1938 (Platerodrilini) are described for the first time. Further species of Platycis Thomson, 1859, Plateros Bourgeois, 1979, Macrolycus Waterhouse, 1878, Cautires Waterhouse, 1879 and Lyponia Waterhouse, 1878 are identified by morphology and molecular markers. The data on larval morphology and their usefulness for classification are discussed.  相似文献

IN normal human cells DNA which has been damaged by ultraviolet radiation is repaired by excision of thymidine dimers and by repair replication. Patients suffering from xeroderma pigmentosum have a hereditary defect of the excision step and therefore their cells repair ultraviolet-induced lesions in their DNA less efficiently than do normal cells1–4.
