Aim We studied how the abundance of the highly invasive fruit‐bearing tree Miconia calvescens DC. influences seed dispersal networks and the foraging patterns of three avian frugivores. Location Tahiti and Moorea, French Polynesia. Methods Our study was conducted at six sites which vary in the abundance of M. calvescens. We used dietary data from three frugivores (two introduced, one endemic) to determine whether patterns of fruit consumption are related to invasive tree abundance. We constructed seed dispersal networks for each island to evaluate how patterns of interaction between frugivores and plants shift at highly invaded sites. Results Two frugivores increased consumption of M. calvescens fruit at highly invaded sites and decreased consumption of other dietary items. The endemic fruit dove, Ptilinopus purpuratus, consumed more native fruit than either of the two introduced frugivores (the red‐vented bulbul, Pycnonotus cafer, and the silvereye, Zosterops lateralis), and introduced frugivores showed a low potential to act as dispersers of native plants. Network patterns on the highly invaded island of Tahiti were dominated by introduced plants and birds, which were responsible for the majority of plant–frugivore interactions. Main conclusions Shifts in the diet of introduced birds, coupled with reduced populations of endemic frugivores, caused differences in properties of the seed dispersal network on the island of Tahiti compared to the less invaded island of Moorea. These results demonstrate that the presence of invasive fruit‐bearing plants and introduced frugivores can alter seed dispersal networks, and that the patterns of alteration depend both on the frugivore community and on the relative abundance of available fruit.  相似文献

Although numerous people grow up speaking more than one language, the impact of bilingualism on brain developing neuroanatomy is still poorly understood. This study aimed to determine whether the changes in the mean fractional-anisotropy (MFA) of language pathways are different between bilingual and monolingual children. Simultaneous-bilinguals, sequential-bilinguals and monolingual, male and female 10–13 years old children participated in this longitudinal study over a period of two years. We used diffusion tensor tractography to obtain mean fractional-anisotropy values of four language related pathways and one control bundle: 1-left-inferior-occipitofrontal fasciculus/lIFOF, 2-left-arcuate fasciculus/lAF/lSLF, 3-bundle arising from the anterior part of corpus-callosum and projecting to orbital lobe/AC-OL, 4-fibres emerging from anterior-midbody of corpus-callosum (CC) to motor cortices/AMB-PMC, 5- right-inferior-occipitofrontal fasciculus rIFOF as the control pathway unrelated to language. These values and their rate of change were compared between 3 groups. FA-values did not change significantly over two years for lAF/lSLF and AC-OL. Sequential-bilinguals had the highest degree of change in the MFA value of lIFOF, and AMB-PMC did not present significant group differences. The comparison of MFA of lIFOF yielded a significantly higher FA-value in simultaneous bilinguals compared to monolinguals. These findings acknowledge the existing difference of the development of the semantic processing specific pathway between children with different semantic processing procedure. These also support the hypothesis that age of second language acquisition affects the maturation and myelination of some language specific white-matter pathways.  相似文献

Oxidative stress has been linked to the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy, the complication of diabetes in the kidney. NADPH oxidases of the Nox family, and in particular the homologue Nox4, are a major source of reactive oxygen species in the diabetic kidney and are critical mediators of redox signaling in glomerular and tubulointerstitial cells exposed to the diabetic milieu. Here, we present an overview of the current knowledge related to the understanding of the role of Nox enzymes in the processes that control mesangial cell, podocyte and tubulointerstitial cell injury induced by hyperglycemia and other predominant factors enhanced in the diabetic milieu, including the renin-angiotensin system and transforming growth factor-β. The nature of the upstream modulators of Nox enzymes as well as the downstream targets of the Nox NADPH oxidases implicated in the propagation of the redox processes that alter renal biology in diabetes will be highlighted.  相似文献

Lymphocytes express voltage-activated K+ channels in their membrane. Combining the patch-clamp techniques of recording with immunological methods, we have analyzed the expression and the involvement of these channels during defined steps of LPS-induced B cell activation. We show that the number of K+ channels increased strongly when B cells entered in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. The involvement of ion channels in B cell proliferation was assessed using channel blockers that inhibit the K+ current. It was first found that TEA, but not TMA, quinine and verapamil totally suppressed both K+ current and DNA synthesis by stimulated lymphocytes as measured by [3H]TdR uptake or propiedium iodide staining. The drugs affected neither the induction by LPS of activation markers such as Ag of the murine class II MHC and type II receptor for the Fc region of IgG nor the initial cell enlargement that occur early during activation. These data indicate that functional K+ channels are not essential for the transition from the G0 to the G1 phases. In contrast, the same channel antagonists blocked the induction of transferrin receptor expression, characteristic of the final stages of G1. These drugs acted on cells already in G1, because their addition 30 h after LPS still suppressed DNA synthesis, and because they inhibited the proliferation of purified B cell blasts. The effect of tetraethylammonium was reversible, a lag period of 12 h occurring before the cells start DNA synthesis after drug removal. Taken together, these data demonstrate that the proliferation of LPS-stimulated B cells requires functional ion channels at a critical period in the G1 phase, taking place before transferrin receptor expression and the entry into the S phase. The involvement of voltage dependent K+ channels at this particular point is suggested by the parallel effects of the drugs used on K+ currents and DNA synthesis.  相似文献

In the literature on medical ethics, it is generally admitted that vulnerable persons or groups deserve special attention, care or protection. One can define vulnerable persons as those having a greater likelihood of being wronged – that is, of being denied adequate satisfaction of certain legitimate claims. The conjunction of these two points entails what we call the Special Protection Thesis. It asserts that persons with a greater likelihood of being denied adequate satisfaction of their legitimate claims deserve special attention, care or protection. Such a thesis remains vague, however, as long as we do not know what legitimate claims are. This article aims at dispelling this vagueness by exploring what claims we have in relation to health care – thus fleshing out a claim‐based conception of vulnerability. We argue that the Special Protection Thesis must be enriched as follows: If individual or group X has a greater likelihood of being denied adequate satisfaction of some of their legitimate claims to (i) physical integrity, (ii) autonomy, (iii) freedom, (iv) social provision, (v) impartial quality of government, (vi) social bases of self‐respect or (vii) communal belonging, then X deserves special attention, care or protection. With this improved understanding of vulnerability, vulnerability talk in healthcare ethics can escape vagueness and serve as an adequate basis for practice.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Natural Killer (NK) cells are key actors of innate immunity that supervise the organism's cells, and fight against viral infections and cancer development through their cytotoxic activity. This cytotoxic activity is modulated by cytokines and hormones and could be influenced by physiological or pathological conditions. New techniques for measuring NK cytotoxic activity by flow-cytometry have recently been developed, and they correlated strongly with the standard chromium ((51)Cr) release assay. Our aim was to implement a previously published enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP)-K562 flow cytometric method and use it to evaluate NK cytotoxic activity under different nutritional conditions. METHODS: NK effector cells were isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and a K562 cell line stably transfected by EGFP was used as target cells. Different analytical parameters, including cell ratios and incubation times, were studied to improve the EGFP-K562 flow cytometric NK test conditions. RESULTS: The optimized test was then used to determine the effect of fasting and refeeding on NK cell numbers and activity in a physiological situation. NK cytotoxic activity in fasted conditions (30.4 +/- 4.4%) increased by a factor 1.7 +/- 0.2 (P = 0.0025) in nourished conditions (45.0 +/- 4.6%) in healthy elderly people. CONCLUSION: Therefore, this method provides a reliable, reproducible and rapid test for analyzing NK cytotoxicity under various conditions.  相似文献

Δ7-5-Desaturase catalyses one of the last steps in ergosterol biosynthesis in fungi. Moreover Δ5-unsaturation is necessary for the sparking function. Synthesis of three pairs of C-6 epimeric cholestanol derivatives are described as potential growth inhibitors.
