The Separation and Characterization of Carbohydrate Rich Component from Ovomucin in Chicken Eggs

We investigated the effects of near-infrared irradiation on the photoconversion of Chenopodium album water-soluble chlorophyll-binding protein (CaWSCP) in the presence of sodium hydrosulfite and found a further photoconversion from CP742 to CP763, a novel form of CaWSCP. Interestingly, one-third of the absorption peak at 668 nm was recovered in CP763, but re-irradiation under oxidative conditions eliminated the photo convertibility of CaWSCP.     

Polyamine oxidase from water hyacinth: purification and properties

Polyamine oxidase was purified to homogeneity from leaves of water hyacinth by the criterion of sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis (SDS disc PAGE). The enzyme showed a high specificity for spermidine and spermine (K_m values 28 micromolar and 20 micromolar, respectively). The optimal pH of the enzyme for both spermidine and spermine was 6.5. The molecular weight of the enzyme estimated by Sephadex G-200 gel filtration was 87,000, while SDS disc PAGE gave a single band at the molecular weight of 60,000. Octamethylenediamine and quinacrine were strong inhibitors of the enzyme, but p-chloromercuribenzoate was without effect. A prosthetic group in the enzyme was identified as flavin adenine dinucleotide.     

Rise in age of sexual maturation in male Japanese monkeys at Takasakiyama in relation to nutritional conditions

A few reports have suggested the possibility that feeding conditions might affect the sexual maturation of free-ranging Japanese monkeys in provisionized troops. In the present study, the sexual maturation of male monkeys at Takasakiyama in 1984, nine years after the start of restriction of artificial feeding, was examined externally and histologically and the results were compared with data obtained in 1971, when artificial foods were abundantly given. Spermatogenesis was not observed in any of the males under 4.5 years old in the present study, whereas it was noted in some premature 3.5-year-old males and in all males over 4.5 years old in the 1971 study. The age of sexual maturation thus rose by one or more years over the 13-year period from 1971 to 1984. The lag in sexual maturation of the males at Takasakiyama in 1984 could have been induced by the restriction of artificial feeding.     

A theory of gene-culture coevolution of parental preference and sex ratio in humans

A theory on the evolution of human primary sex ratio is proposed. Effects of parental preference for sons, reflected in birth control based on offspring sex ratio and female biased infanticide, on the evolution of primary sex ratio are analyzed. Both are shown to select for female bias in primary sex ratio. The gene-culture coevolution of female infanticide and primary sex ratio is also studied and it is shown that female infanticide develops more in societies in which the father plays a more important role in the transmission of culture than the mother does.     

Effect of the dietary alpha-linolenate/linoleate balance on leukotriene production and histamine release in rats

Rats were fed semi-purified diets supplemented either with safflower seed oil rich in linoleate (18:2n-6) or with perilla seed oil rich in alpha-linolenate (18:3n-3) through two generations. In the major phospholipids of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), the proportions of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (18:2, 20:4, 22:4 and 22:5) were higher but those of n-3 acids (20:5, 22:5 and 22:6) were lower in the safflower group than in the perilla group. When stimulated with a calcium ionophore, the PMNs from the safflower group produced 27% more leukotriene (LT)B4 than those from the perilla group. The formation of LTB5 which has biological activities less than 1/10 those of LTB4, was negligible in the safflower group but was 40 ng/10(7) PMN cells in the perilla group. The amount of the total LTB formed in the perilla group tended to be more than in the safflower group. The formation of SRS-A (slow-reacting substances of anaphylaxis) by PMNs was determined by measuring the spasmogenic activities of LTs on guinea pig ileum. SRS-A activity was 59% higher in the safflower group than in the perilla group. In contrast, histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells was not significantly different between the two groups. Thus, the increasing the alpha-linolenate/linoleate ratio of diets results in the decreased formation of LTs derived from 20:4n-6 in PMNs. This may be beneficial in lowering the severity of allergic and inflammatory responses caused by LTs, and thereby shifting the pathological symptoms to normal self-defense mechanism.     

Lung burden of green nickel oxide aerosol and histopathological findings in rats after continuous inhalation

There are few inhalation studies of nickel carcinogenesis. In this study, Wistar male rats were exposed to green nickel oxide (NiO(G)) aerosols (mass median aerodynamic diameter, 0.6 μm) for 7 h/d, 5 d/wk for up to 12 mo. The average exposure concentration was controlled at 0.3 and 1.2 mg/m³ during the exposure. For histopathological examination and measurement of the nickel concentration in rat organs, the rats were sacrificed at 3, 6, and 12 mo of exposure and 8 mo clearance period following 12 mo of exposure. The nickel content in rat lungs that was observed up to 2.6 mg after 12 mo exposure, was proportional to the exposure concentration during the exposure. The clearance of the nickel from the lungs was very slow and the biological half time was determined 7.7 mo. Although the rats were exposed continuously to NiO(G), for 12 mo and kept for 8 mo clearance period, there were no malignant tumors in any of the exposed animals.     

Secondary release of thromboxane A2 in aerosol leukotriene C4-induced bronchoconstriction in guinea pigs

Effect of a thromboxane synthetase inhibitor (OKY-046) on bronchoconstriction induced by aerosol leukotriene C4 and histamine was studied in anesthetized, artificially ventilated guinea pigs in order to examine whether secondary release of thromboxane A2 is produced by aerosol leukotriene C4 or not. 0.01–1.0μg/ml of leukotriene C4 and 12.5–400μg/ml of histamine inhaled from ultrasonic nebulizer developed for small animals caused dose-dependent increase of pressure at airway opening (Pao) which is considered to be an index representing bronchial response. Pretreatment of the animals with intravenous OKY-046 (100mg/kg) significantly reduced the airway responses produced by inhalation of 0.1, 0.33 and 1.0μg/ml of leukotriene C4, while the pretreatment did not affect the histamine dose-response curve. Based on these findings and previous reports (6, 7), it is suggested that aerosol leukotriene C4 activates arachidonate cyclooxygenase pathway including thromboxane A2 synthesis and the released cyclooxygenase products have bronchodilating effect as a whole
