The first example of pollination by fungus gnats in the eudicots is reported. The genus Mitella (Saxifragales) is characteristically produces minute, inconspicuous, mostly dull-coloured flowers with linear, sometimes pinnately branched, petals. To understand the function of these characteristic flowers, we studied the pollination biology of four Mitella species with different floral traits and different sexual expression: dioecious M. acerina , gynodioecious M. furusei var. subramosa , and hermaphroditic M. stylosa var. makinoi and M. integripetala. Flower-bagging experiments showed that wind pollination did not occur in the dioecious and gynodioecious species. Two years of observations of flower visitors at six study sites in Japan revealed that the principal pollinators of all four Mitella were specific species of fungus gnats (Mycetophilidae), which landed on the flowers with their long spiny legs settling on the petals. Characteristically, numerous pollen grains were attached to the fungus gnats in specific locations on the body. Although, on average, 1.3–2.6 fungus gnats visited each inflorescence per day, the fruit set of both bisexual and female flowers exceeded 63%. These results suggest that fungus gnats are highly efficient pollinators of Mitella spp., and that Mitella flowers are morphologically adapted to pollination by fungus gnats.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 449–460.  相似文献

Evolution of epiphytes in Davalliaceae and related ferns   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The evolution of epiphytes in Davalliaceae was investigated by field observations and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Field studies revealed that in Davalliaceae and related ferns, epiphytes in a broad sense are classified into climber, secondary hemi-epiphyte, and obligate epiphyte, based on combinations of the places (ground vs. tree) of inferred spore germination and sporophyte growth. Some species of Davalliaceae have multiple life forms, i.e. secondary hemi-epiphyte and obligate epiphyte, whereas others are obligate epiphytes. Phylogenetic trees obtained from rbcL and accD gene sequences supported that secondary hemi-epiphytic Oleandra is sister to the epiphytic Davalliaceae and polygrammoid ferns. Analyses of life form evolution based on the phylogenetic relationships suggested that obligate epiphytes of the Davalliaceae and polygrammoid ferns evolved from secondary hemi-epiphytes, or less likely from climbers. We hypothesized a scenario for the evolution of life forms in Davalliaceae and related groups that involves successive changes in rhizome habit, root function, and germination place. Patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) of tumors are increasingly becoming important tools for translational research in oncology. The NOD.Cg-Prkdcscid Il2rgtm1Sug/Jic (NOG) mouse is an efficient host for PDXs. Thus as a basis for future development of methods to obtain PDXs from various disease types, we have studied the factors that affect the outcome of transplantation of human colorectal cancer in NOG mice. Of the original donor cases examined, 73% had successful engraftment. The outcome of donor-matched tissues was consistent in most cases, and was thought to show that the condition of the host did not affect engraftment. Next we analyzed the tumor aggressiveness in terms of histology grade of the original tumor and found that they were related to engraftment. Detailed histopathological examination of the transplanted tissues strongly indicated that lymphocytes engrafted with the tumor cells affect engraftment. As a factor related to transplantation of lymphocytes, we studied the human IgG concentration in the serum of tumor-bearing mice, but there was no tendency for higher concentrations to result in unsuccessful engraftment. Finally, we studied the type, density and location of T cells in the original donor tissue to determine the immune contexture and found that the unsuccessful engraftment cases tended to have an adequate or coordinated immune contexture compared to successful engraftment cases. From these results, we concluded that the aggressiveness and the T cell infiltration of the original tumor affect the outcome of transplantation in the NOG mouse.  相似文献

本文研究的细石核出自灵井"许昌人"遗址第5层,该层为桔黄色粉细砂,2008-2013年发掘,出土细石核82件,其他还有与之相关的材料。该层碳十四年龄为13402±406BP。细石核素材一般为燧石质的石片、小砾石等。根据其毛坯形状、细石叶剥离进度等的差异,形成了角锥形、柱形、圆锥形等各种形状。在剥离石叶过程中,曾运用过台面修理、工作面上端(细石叶头部)修正、台面更新、台面转移等调整手法。灵井石器工业的细石叶工艺是一种以角锥形(型)细石核为主的技术。通过对比,灵井与华北各地的同类细石核大小尺寸接近,与本省临近的大岗、李家沟等细石器遗址应属相同或相近技术传统的细石叶工艺。  相似文献

A strain of carrot cells (Daucus carota cv. Kintoki) grew exponentially in the presence of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D, 1 mg/1) with a doubling time of about 2 days. When those cells were transferred to a medium lacking 2,4-D, they continued to grow at almost the same rate for about a week. When the cells were again transferred to the auxin-free medium, the rate of cell division gradually decreased. After the cell division had ceased, cells were returned to the ordinary 2,4-D medium. A burst of cell divisions occurred after about 2 days. Timing of DNA synthesis and of mitosis suggested that the cells had been arrested at G1 phase. In a medium containing indoleacetic acid instead of 2,4-D, the auxin was rapidly degraded and the culture was similarly synchronized as in the auxin-omitted medium.  相似文献

Daily alternating temperatures or a short exposure to low orhigh temperatures were necessary for the germination of eggplantseeds at the initial stage of after-ripening. But requirementsbecame less strict with the progress of after-ripening, andafter 4 to 8 months of afterripening, germination occurred easilyboth at constant (20 and 25) and daily alternating temperatures(30 for 16hrs and then 20 for 8hrs). With further progress in after-ripening, however, daily alternatingtemperatures or a short exposure to low or high temperaturesbecame again indispensable for attaining a high percentage ofgermination. The progress of after-ripening was greatly influencedby the degree of seed ripening, that is, by the period beforethe seeds were sampled from fruits after anthesis (ripening). The effect of GA on the germination of egg plant seeds varieddepending on the concentration of GA, temperature and the degreeof maturity (ripening and after-ripening) of the seeds. The possible role of the neurosecretory system in regulationof salt and water has been studied in the annelids and crustaceans.In the earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris, a brain factor influences'the salt and osmotic concentration of the blood and coelomicfluid. Removal of the brain results in the increase of waterinflux with a decrease in the salt and osmotic concentrationsof the body fluids. The decreases in salt and osmotic concentrationscan be prevented by the implantation of the brain or the injectionof brain homogenates. In the freshwater crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, a factor, presumablysecreted in the brain and released in the eyestalk, seems tomaintain the normal permeability of the body surfaces to water.Eyestalk removal, which eliminates the release site, resultsin the increased influx of water with a decrease in the saltconcentration of the blood. A brain factor also seems to beinvolved in maintaining the sodium and osmotic concentrationsof the blood. In the semi-terrestrial grapsid crab, Metopograpsus messor,the thoracic ganglion, under the control of an eyestalk element,secretes a factor involved in increasing the permeability ofthe body surfaces to water. The removal of the eyestalks, theimplantation of the thoracic ganglion, or the injection of extractsof thoracic ganglia, results in changes in the osmotic concentrationof the blood tending toward that of the medium. In all threespecies studied, the neuroendocrine factors seem to be involvedprimarily in the regulation of the permeability of the bodysurfaces to water.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that when Chlorella protothecoidesis grown in a medium rich in glucose and poor in nitrogen source(urea), apparently chlorophyll-less cells with profoundly degeneratedplastids—referred to as "glucose-bleached cells—areproduced either in the light or in darkness. When the glucose-bleachedcells are incubated in a medium enriched with the nitrogen sourcebut without added glucose, an active formation of chlorophylloccurs after a certain lag period under illumination, whilein darkness a very small amount of chlorophyll is formed atabout the same time as in the light. The stimulating effectof light on the chlorophyll formation is not appreciably affectedwhen the photosynthetic CO2-fixation of greening algal cellsis blocked by the addition of CMU. In the present study, itwas further found that the light-enhanced chlorophyll formationproceeds, although at a somewhat lower rate, under aerationof CO2-free air. All the experiments in this work were doneunder these non-photosynthetic conditions to exclude any influenceof photosynthates.
  2. The effect of light (from daylight fluorescentlamps) on thechlorophyll formation in the glucose-bleachedalgal cells wassaturating at about 1,000 lux. Blue light wasfound to be mosteffective; yellow, green and red light followingin the orderof decreasing effectiveness.

When the bleachedalgal cells were illuminated for a short periodin the lag phaseof chlorophyll formation and subsequently incubatedin darkness,there occurred an appreciable enhancement of chlorophyllformationin the dark. When the short illumination was appliedat differenttimes of the lag phase, the enhancement was inducedto almostthe same extent. But the longer the duration of theilluminationduring the lag phase, the greater was the enhancementof chlorophyllformation in the subsequent dark incubation.In such experimentsblue light was most effective and red lightleast, as it wasthe case in the experiments of continuous illumination.An intervenientillumination of the bleached cells at lowertemperatures orunder the atmosphere of N2 produced little orno enhancementof the chlorophyll formation in the subsequentdark incubation.

Based on these results, it was concluded that the light enhancementof chlorophyll formation in the glucose-bleached algal cellsis mediated by a non-chlorophyllous photoreceptor(s), absorbingmaximally blue and yellow light, and that a light-induced changeof the photoreceptor is immediately followed by a certain dark(temperaturedependent and aerobic) process(es) which is connected,directly or indirectly, to the chlorophyll synthesis.

When dark grown cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii y-1 mutantwere exposed to continuous light, an immediate transformationof small amounts of protochlorophyll(ide), which had been presentin the dark grown cells, to chlorophyll was observed. Afterthis, there was a slow accumulation of chlorophyll lasting for2.5-3 hr before the start of exponential synthesis. Initialaccumulation of chlorophyll was distinctly slower at a highlight intensity (13,000 lux) than it was at moderate intensitiesof light (2,000–5,000 lux). However, the exponential synthesisof chlorophyll started after the same 2.5–3 hr of illumination. A brief pre-illumination of cells followed by incubation indarkness was effective in promoting chlorophyll synthesis undersubsequent continuous illumination at high, as well as moderatelight intensities. Pretreatment alleviated retardation of theinitial chlorophyll accumulation by light of high intensity.The promoting effect of preillumination on chlorophyll synthesiswas sufficient, even when a light impulse as short as 10 secwas given. However, the effect was dependent on length of thedark period after the short pre-illumination. The full extentof this effect was observed when the dark period was about 2.5–3hr long. Further dark incubation gradually decreased the effect. On the basis of these findings, it is assumed that a factor(s)responsible for promotion of chlorophyll (or chloroplast) synthesisin the process of greening of dark grown cells is produced duringthe dark period after a brief pre-illumination, and that thefactor is turned over at a relatively fast rate.
