Fluctuations in marine populations often relate to the supply of recruits by oceanic currents. Variation in these currents is typically driven by large‐scale changes in climate, in particular ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation). The dependence on large‐scale climatic changes may, however, be modified by early life history traits of marine taxa. Based on eight years of annual surveys, along 150 km of coastline, we examined how ENSO influenced abundance of juvenile fish, coral spat, and canopy‐forming macroalgae. We then investigated what traits make populations of some fish families more reliant on the ENSO relationship than others. Abundance of juvenile fish and coral recruits was generally positively correlated with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), higher densities recorded during La Niña years, when the ENSO‐influenced Leeuwin Current is stronger and sea surface temperature higher. The relationship is typically positive and stronger among fish families with shorter pelagic larval durations and stronger swimming abilities. The relationship is also stronger at sites on the coral back reef, although the strongest of all relationships were among the lethrinids (r = .9), siganids (r = .9), and mullids (r = .8), which recruit to macroalgal meadows in the lagoon. ENSO effects on habitat seem to moderate SOI–juvenile abundance relationship. Macroalgal canopies are higher during La Niña years, providing more favorable habitat for juvenile fish and strengthening the SOI effect on juvenile abundance. Conversely, loss of coral following a La Niña‐related heat wave may have compromised postsettlement survival of coral dependent species, weakening the influence of SOI on their abundance. This assessment of ENSO effects on tropical fish and habitat‐forming biota and how it is mediated by functional ecology improves our ability to predict and manage changes in the replenishment of marine populations.  相似文献

DNA molecules ranging in size from 1 to 630 kilobase pair and intercalated with either ethidium bromide (EtBr) or propidium iodide (PI) were electrophoresed in 1% agarose at four different electric field strengths. The extent of intercalation of EtBr under the conditions of our electrophoresis experiments was determined by a spectroscopic technique, whereas the extent of intercalation of PI was inferred from previous studies. The effects of the increase in DNA contour length and the concomitant decrease of linear charge density were separated based on our analysis of the mobility data. We conclude that the main factor responsible for the reduced electrophoretic mobility of intercalated DNA is the diminished linear charge density and not the increased contour length. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Using recombinant tetanus toxin HC fragment (rTT-HC) as carrier, we prepared multimeric bivalent immunogens featuring the synthetic hexasaccharide fragment of O-PS of Vibrio cholerae O:1, serotype Ogawa, in combination with either the synthetic hexasaccharide fragment of O-PS of Vibrio cholerae O:1, serotype Inaba, or a synthetic disaccharide tetrapeptide peptidoglycan fragment as adjuvant. The conjugation reaction was effected by squaric acid chemistry and monitored in virtually real time by SELDI-TOF MS. In this way, we could prepare well-defined immunogens with predictable carbohydrate–carrier ratio, whose molecular mass and the amount of each saccharide attached could be independently determined. The ability to prepare such neoglycoconjugates opens unprecedented possibilities for preparation of conjugate vaccines for bacterial diseases from synthetic carbohydrates.  相似文献

The preparation, by the phosphotriester approach, of d[C-T-A-T-T-C-C-A-G-A-A-G-T] from one tetranucleoside triphosphate and three trinucleoside diphosphate blocks is described. The use of the o-dibromomethylbenzoyl (DBMB) protecting group in oligodeoxyribonucleotide synthesis is described for the first time. Internucleotide linkages are protected by o-chlorophenyl groups which are finally removed by treatment with the N1, N1, N3, N3-tetramethylguanidinium salt of syn-4-nitrobenzaldoxime. The first phosphorylation step (leading to phosphodiester intermediates) is carried out by treatment with o-chlorophenyl phosphorodi-(1,2,4-triazolide) followed by treatment with water and triethylamine. 1-Mesitylenesulphonyl-3-nitro-1,2,4-triazole (MSNT) is used as the activating agent in the second phosphorylation step in which 5'-protected mono- and di-nucleotides are condensed with nucleoside building blocks containing unprotected 3'-hydroxy functions.  相似文献

In this investigation, pairs of upper elementary students test germination percentage using seeds of Indian corn (Zea mays), scarlet runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus), and the prairie cup-plant (Silphium perfoliatum) grown on rolled, damp paper towels. The pairs compare seeds that have been stratified, a simulation of overwintering and spring thaw, to seeds of the same type that have not. Then, the full class compares the results across all seed types to determine when each type should be planted to maximize germination percentage. Expected results are that the native cup-plant will require stratification, whereas the domesticated corn and beans—bred over centuries for easy growing—will not. Suggestions for helping students simulate more environmental conditions which could affect seed germination, as well as connections with other academic subjects, are included in the article.  相似文献
