In spite of the clear-cut temporal features exhibited by most species, temporal characteristics have merited little attention from evolutionists. However, it is logical to assume that since the environment oscillates cyclically, organisms that adapt to it must also oscillate; that is, cyclic factors have a clear evolutionary role. This article discusses evidence that the timing system is genetically determined; the role of environmental cues such as zeitgebers and masking factors; the temporal basis of mating; and masking as a disorganizing factor.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We have investigated the magnitude of diurnal variation in back squat and bench press performance using the MuscleLab force velocity transducer. Thirty resistance-trained males (mean ± SD: age 21.7 ± 1.4 years; body mass 80.5 ± 4.5 kg; height 1.79 ± 0.06 m) underwent two sessions at different times of day: morning (M, 07:30 h) and evening (E, 17:30 h). Each session included a period when rectal temperature (Trec) was measured at rest, a 5-min standardized 150 W warm-up on a cycle ergometer, then defined programme of bench press (at 20, 40 and 60 kg) and back squat (at 30, 50 and 70 kg) exercises. A linear encoder was attached to an Olympic bar used for the exercises and average force (AF), peak velocity (PV) and time-to-peak velocity (tPV) were measured (MuscleLab software; MuscleLab Technology, Langesund, Norway) during the concentric phase of the movements. Values for Trec at rest were higher in the evening compared to morning values (0.48°C, P < 0.0005). Daily variations were apparent for both bench press and back squat performance for AF (1.9 and 2.5%), PV (8.3 and 12.7%) and tPV (?16.6 and ?9.8%; where a negative number indicates a decrease in the variable from morning to evening). There was a main effect for load where AF and tPV increased and PV decreased from the lightest load to the heaviest for both bench press and back squat (47.1 and 80.2%; 31.7 and 57.7%; ?42.1 and ?73.9%; P < 0.0005 where a negative number indicates a decrease in the variable with increasing load). An interaction was found only for tPV, such that the tPV occurs earlier in the evening than the morning at the highest loads (60 and 70 kg) for both bench press and back squat, respectively (mean difference of 0.32 and 0.62 s). In summary, diurnal variation in back squat and bench press was shown; and the tPV in complex multi-joint movements occurs earlier during the concentric phase of exercise when back squat or bench press is performed in the evening compared to the morning. This difference can be detected using a low cost, portable and widely available commercial instrument and enables translation of past laboratory/tightly controlled experimental research in to main-stream coaching practice.  相似文献

Summary

Bog myrtle communities were surveyed to determine their accessibility for harvesting and the approximate number of harvestable stems. At least 45.1 million bog myrtle stems within Scotland may be both suitable (about 55 cm long) and easily accessible (< 1 km from a tarmac road) for harvesting. In a harvesting trial in Strath Avon, plants were subjected to five different cutting treatments with and without the addition of NPK. There were significant differences between cutting treatments, but no significant effects of fertilizer. Cutting all stems to half height produced the most rapid regeneration. Stems could take eight years to regenerate to a harvestable size if this cutting method were employed. On this basis, a harvest of 5.6 million stems could be sustained annually, compared with a current harvest of about 0.6 million.  相似文献

Cytotoxic lymphocytes (CLs) contain lysosome-related organelles (LROs) that perform the normal degradative functions of the lysosome, in addition to storage and release of powerful cytotoxins employed to kill virally infected or abnormal cells. Among these cytotoxins is granzyme B (GrB), a protease that has also been implicated in activation (restimulation)-induced cell death of natural killer (NK) and T cells, but the underlying mechanism and its regulation are unclear. Here we show that restimulation of previously activated human or mouse lymphocytes induces lysosomal membrane permeabilisation (LMP), followed by GrB release from LROs into the CL cytosol. The model lysosomal stressors sphingosine and Leu-Leu-methyl-ester, and CLs from gene-targeted mice were used to show that LMP releases GrB in both a time- and concentration-dependent manner, and that the liberated GrB is responsible for cell death. The endogenous GrB inhibitor Serpinb9 (Sb9) protects CLs against LMP-induced death but is decreasingly effective as the extent of LMP increases. We also used these model stressors to show that GrB is the major effector of LMP-mediated death in T cells, but that in NK cells additional effectors are released, making GrB redundant. We found that limited LMP and GrB release occurs constitutively in proliferating lymphocytes and in NK cells engaged with targets in vitro. In Ectromelia virus-infected lymph nodes, working NK cells lacking Sb9 are more susceptible to GrB-mediated death. Taken together, these data show that a basal level of LMP occurs in proliferating and activated lymphocytes, and is increased on restimulation. LMP releases GrB from LROs into the lymphocyte cytoplasm and its ensuing interaction with Sb9 dictates whether or not the cell survives. The GrB-Sb9 nexus may therefore represent an additional mechanism of limiting lymphocyte lifespan and populations.  相似文献

Six very premature babies (born at 26–28 weeks gestational age) have been studied in hospital for 11–17 weeks, while in intensive care and in an incubator. Apart from suffering occasionally from the neonatal disorders of haemolytic jaundice and ‘respiratory distress of the newborn’, the babies were healthy and developed normally. Initially, the babies were continuously fed intravenously, and the lighting in the ward was on continuously. Routine care was given round the clock. When their medical condition permitted it, the babies were moved in their incubator to an adjacent ward, where they took frequent (2–4 hourly) small meals by mouth, the lighting was dimmed at night, and routine care tended to be given more in the daytime. Hourly recordings of insulated skin temperature were taken throughout the study, and it is the detection of rhythmicity in these measurements that has been the subject of the present study. The methods used were Phase-weighted Stacks, Phasor Walkout and Power Spectral Analysis. These methods have previously been used mainly in geophysical studies, and their value is that they can detect weak signals in noisy data and do not assume a particular waveform of any signal. Circadian rhythmicity was found in all babies for much of the time that were in the constant environment provided by the incubator. Ultradian rhythms were sometimes present also, but they were shorter-lived, and showed a wide range of changing periods, generally in excess of 8 h. When the babies were being treated for jaundice or respiratory distress, there was a tendency for the circadian rhythms to become weaker and for a broader spectrum of ultradian periods to appear. Placing babies in the 12 h : 12 h light : dark environment provided by the ward, and instituting feeding by mouth, had, in most cases, only modest effects upon either circadian or ultradian rhythms. Thus, circadian rhythms continued (but generally with a period not exactly equal to 24 h), and ultradian rhythms, when present, often did not show periods that could be related easily to feeding or care-giving. These results are discussed in terms of evidence for endogenous and exogenous origins of the observed rhythms, and of theories that have postulated the relationship between circadian and ultradian rhythms. It is concluded that the results from the present analyses are difficult to reconcile with the view that circadian rhythms develop from interactions between ultradian oscillators. We suggest that they indicate a matu-ration of the circadian system as a consequence of increasing associations between the circadian elements that are present in the suprachiasmatic nuclei and in other oscillators of the circadian system. The new analytical methods used here also indicate that the results obtained from time-frequency analysis depend to some extent upon the method used.  相似文献

The circadian rhythm and feeding behaviour (bite rate) of 16 Scottish Blackface ewes of which eight were fitted with a lightweight (863 g) GPS collar were examined. The collar consisted of a leather harness and a 0.5 l aluminium box and represented 2.2% of the average body mass of the study ewes. No differences in circadian rhythm and bite rate were found between ewes fitted with the collars and ewes that were not. The relevance of using collar weight as a proportion of body mass as a guide to gauge its impact on the feeding behaviour of small ruminant (35–75 kg) herbivores is questioned.  相似文献
