A hypothesis on change in prey size selectivity in relation to illumination level was tested on the basis of data on weight and size composition of the content of the digestive tract of larvae of perch Perca fluviatilis and on zooplankton in the layer 0–6 m (Wallersee Lake, Austria). Larvae foraging in the twilight-night period had almost two times more food in the intestine than those foraging in the daytime. The size composition of perch larvae and concentration and size composition of zooplankton hardly differed in the daytime and twilight-night samples. For the first time, it is shown on field material that more intensive feeding of larvae at twilight is related to selection of significantly larger prey than in daytime feeding. In the day-time, the larvae consumed more prey but their maximum size did not exceed 0.6 of the diameter of mouth opening of the fish; at twilight it was over 0.8. In case of feeding on so large prey, not only the weight of the consumed feed increases but the time used for capture and swallowing also considerably increases. The larvae which in the period of investigation did not yet form schools, which perform the principal defensive function, were especially vulnerable for predators feeding on relatively large prey. The decrease of the part of small-sized prey at twilight is not related to their lesser availability due to a low illumination. It is assumed that feeding on energetically more valuable but less available prey is shifted to the period of low illumination when the larvae are less exposed to predation risk. The obtained results are discussed from positions of the triotroph concept (Manteifel’, 1961).  相似文献

The tolerance to freezing and thawing of Leucodon sciuroides, a moss growing in mountainous areas of the Mediterranean (south-east Spain), was investigated by means of CO2 gas exchange, modulated chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence and pigment analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography. Evidence is presented for freezing-induced decreases in CO2 fixation that enhance non-radiative dissipation of absorbed light energy, a process which protects the photosynthetic apparatus. The photosynthetic apparatus of L. sciuroides remained fully recuperable after freezing, as indicated by the recovery of photosynthetic CO2 fixation and Chl fluorescence parameters to pre-freezing values during thawing. The rapid recovery of photosynthesis activity during thawing in L. sciuroides suggests that this moss is capable of tolerating freeze-thaw cycles in a manner similar to that found at higher latitudes or in the Antarctic. The resistance of the photosynthetic apparatus of this moss to freezing might be achieved, at least partially, through the employment of dissipative pathways, such as non-radiative dissipation of absorbed light energy. Synopsis We examined behavioural interactions and feeding within triads of young-of-the-year (YOY) Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis, in aquaria with and without a shelter. For the first time we showed that competition for shelters, but not for food, provokes aggressiveness and triggers establishment of social hierarchy among young perch. No aggressiveness occurred during feeding bouts, when food was a limited resource. We expect the observed interactions to occur in natural heterogeneous habitats providing limited number of refuges and high local density of fish. They may ultimately lead to previously anticipated interference competition among juvenile perch.  相似文献

Minnows of the genus Phoxinus are promising candidates to investigate adaptive divergence, as they inhabit both still and running waters of a variety of altitudes and climatic zones in Europe. We used landmark‐based geometric morphometric methods to quantify the level of morphological variability in Phoxinus populations from streams and lakes of Northern Italy and the Danube basin. We analyzed body shape differences of populations in the dorsal, lateral, and ventral planes, using a large array of landmarks and semilandmarks. As the species identification of Phoxinus on morphological characters is ambiguous, we used two mitochondrial genes to determine the genetic background of the samples and to ensure we are comparing homogenous groups. We have found significant body shape differences between habitats: Minnow populations inhabiting streams had a deeper body and caudal peduncle and more laterally inserted pectoral fins than minnows inhabiting lakes. We have also found significant body shape differences between genetic groups: Italian minnows had deeper bodies, deeper and shorter caudal peduncles, and a shorter and wider gape than both groups from the Danube. Our results show that the morphology of Phoxinus is highly influenced by habitat and that body shape variation between habitats was within the same range as between genetic groups. These morphological differences are possibly linked to different modes of swimming and foraging in the respective habitats and are likely results of phenotypic plasticity. However, differences in shape and interlandmark distances between the groups suggest that some (though few) morphometric characters might be useful for separating Phoxinus species.  相似文献

The sequence containing 'upstream Sal repeats' (USR) from the Arabidopsis thaliana ribosomal DNA intergenic region (IGR) was tested for its influence on the in vivo activity of nearby protein coding genes. On average, the presence of the IGR fragment leads to a four-fold increase in the expression of a reporter gene, beta-glucuronidase, under control of the strong CaMV 35S promoter. With the help of the site-specific cre-lox recombination system, we have also obtained pairs of transgenic lines with or without the USR-containing fragment, both integrated at the same chromosomal position. Results with these transgenic lines, which contain an NPT II (kanamycin resistance) gene under control of the nos promoter as a test gene, confirmed the results obtained with the CaMV 35S-driven GUS gene. Moreover, they show that the IGR sequence can oppose tendencies of gene silencing. We hypothesize that the described effect relates to features of the chromatin structure in the proximity of the upstream Sal repeats.  相似文献

The interrelationship of fish size, prey size and handling time within a 15-min feeding period was studied in three size groups of 0 + roach, Rutilus rutilus, and bleak, Alburnus alburnus. Four size classes of cladoceran prey were used to measure changes in feeding rate and handling time from initial rapid feeding to sustained feeding. Observed differences in increase of handling time between prey size classes led to a change in the prey profitability ranking of those size classes within the first 2 min of the experiments. A 1-min feeding period is interpreted as reflecting an intermediate motivational status between extreme hunger and satiation. The use of average handling times for this period revealed a substantial change in prey profitability estimates compared to previous studies which used handling times based on short-term (a few seconds up to 1 min) feeding. It is not the largest prey items a fish can handle and swallow that are most profitable, but prey of intermediate size. By this approach a closer fit between expectations derived from optimal foraging theory and empirical data on prey size selection of 0 + zooplanktivorous fish is qualitatively achieved. Optimal prey size was found to be close the mouth gape width in small fish of 15 mm standard length, decreasing to 50% of mouth gape width in fish of 40 mm standard length.  相似文献

Translocations of Baltic whitefish (Coregonus sp.) into Austrian Alpine lakes have created 'artificial hybrid zones', threatening the genetic integrity of native lineages. We evaluate the genetic structure of Coregonus in Austrian lakes and characterize hybridization and introgression between native and introduced lineages. Fifteen populations (N=747) were assessed for allelic variation at eight microsatellite loci and a reduced set (N=253) for variation across two mtDNA genes (cyt b and NADH-3). Bayesian approaches were used to estimate individual admixture proportions (q-values) and classify genotypes as native, introduced or hybrids. q-value distributions varied among populations highlighting differential hybridization and introgression histories. Many lakes revealed a clear distinction between native and introduced genotypes despite hybridization, whereas some locations revealed hybrid swarms. Genetic structure among lakes was congruent with morphological divergence and novelty raising speculation of multiple taxa, including a population south of the Alps, outside the putative native range of Coregonus. Although statistically congruent with inferences based on nuclear markers, mitochondrial haplotype data was not diagnostic with respect to native and non-native lineages, supporting that the Alpine region was colonized post-glacially by an admixture of mtDNA lineages, which coalesce >1 Ma. Mechanisms promoting or eroding lineage isolation are discussed, as well as a high potential to conserve native Alpine lineages despite the extensive historical use of introduced Baltic stocks.  相似文献

We hypothesized that there is spatio-temporal genetic (mtDNA) structure of native and introduced larval whitefish (Coregonus sp.) in two Austrian lakes (Traunsee and Hallstättersee). Larval whitefish were sampled from 12 sites in each lake and screened for variation in the mtDNA NADH-1 gene. Based on the sequencing of adult fish together with existing GenBank sequences, an RFLP protocol was developed to assign haplotypes from larval samples into one of two divergent lineages. All but one site (pelagic) in Traunsee contained both haplotypes, thus there was no support for spatial segregation of mtDNA groups in that lake. However, weekly sampling from December to May in Traunsee revealed a temporal pattern, with the native haplotypes dominating in December and January before the appearance of the introduced Baltic clade. In Hallstättersee, only three of the 12 sites sampled revealed haplotypes from the introduced clade and thus spatial segregation seems operative on that lake. Our results imply that differences in the spawning ecology of the two groups maintain sufficient reproductive isolation to be reflected in distinct larval occurrence in space and time highly consistent with genetic differences on the mtDNA level. If the two lineages were highly introgressed, we would expect to find little or no correspondence between spatio-temporal patterns in larval distribution and the differentiated mtDNA lineages.  相似文献
