Predictive coding has been previously introduced as a hierarchical coding framework for the visual system. At each level, activity predicted by the higher level is dynamically subtracted from the input, while the difference in activity continuously propagates further. Here we introduce modular predictive coding as a feedforward hierarchy of prediction modules without back-projections from higher to lower levels. Within each level, recurrent dynamics optimally segregates the input into novelty and familiarity components. Although the anatomical feedforward connectivity passes through the novelty-representing neurons, it is nevertheless the familiarity information which is propagated to higher levels. This modularity results in a twofold advantage compared to the original predictive coding scheme: the familiarity-novelty representation forms quickly, and at each level the full representational power is exploited for an optimized readout. As we show, natural images are successfully compressed and can be reconstructed by the familiarity neurons at each level. Missing information on different spatial scales is identified by novelty neurons and complements the familiarity representation. Furthermore, by virtue of the recurrent connectivity within each level, non-classical receptive field properties still emerge. Hence, modular predictive coding is a biologically realistic metaphor for the visual system that dynamically extracts novelty at various scales while propagating the familiarity information.  相似文献

Aeromonas bacteria (110 strains) from a variety of clinical, food and environmental sources, were identified using routine biochemical tests. Concurrently they were tested aerobically and anaerobically for their ability to perform synergistic haemolysis with Staphylococcus aureus (the 'CAMP' reaction). Results did not support a reported observation that the 'CAMP' reaction can he used to facilitate speciation of Aeromonas bacteria.  相似文献

Multiple HindIII-restriction fragments of Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella typhi chromosomal DNA exhibited homology with the heat-labile enterotoxin (LT1) gene of Escherichia coli as determined by Southern blot analysis. A 9.4 kb HindIII restriction fragment identified in S. typhimurium and S. typhi chromosomal DNA reacted with both eltA and eltB gene probes. However, the homology of the 9.4 kb DNA fragment from these Salmonella species was greater with eltB than eltA. In addition, a synthetic oligonucleotide probe, made to a portion of the putative GM1-ganglioside binding region of cholera toxin (CT) and LT1, hybridized with the 9.4 kb DNA fragment of S. typhimurium but not with the 9.4 kb fragment found in S. typhi isolates. The hybridization of multiple restriction fragments of Salmonella DNA with eltA and eltB gene sequences further suggests duplication of the stx operon on the chromosome of these bacteria.  相似文献

Portulaca oleracea is a noxious annual weed of worldwide distribution in temperate to tropical climates. Its taxonomy has been treated in contradictory ways in the past. Various microspecies have been described, lumped into a single species by other authors. We re‐examined the importance of seed size and ploidy variation, previously applied as the most important taxonomic characters, for systematic classification based on accessions from Europe, Asia, Africa and South America using flow cytometry, chromosome counting and morphometry. Sixteen microspecies and six transitional forms, covering the ploidy and seed character variation, proposed for the complex, were studied from 178 populations. Portulaca grandiflora was included as a reference species from outside the complex. DNA hyper‐pentaploidy or hexaploidy were inferred for the majority of accessions which exhibited the full range of seed size. It is recommended that the only species of lower ploidy (either diploid based on x = 12 or tetraploid based on x = 12) encountered, P. nicaraguensis, should be separated from the P. oleracea complex as it deviates in base chromosome number and monoploid genome size. The frequency distribution of seed size was continuous and unimodal within the wild taxa of the complex and in pairs of taxa defined by testa sculpture. Seed size of DNA hexaploids was slightly negatively correlated with sample/standard fluorescence intensities. Our results conflict with the current microspecies concept. Fish gene mapping studies have identified several syntenic groups showing conservation over more than 400 million years of vertebrate evolution. In particular, Xiphophorus linkage group IV has been identified as a homolog of human chromosomes 15 and 19. During mammalian evolution, loci coding for glucosephosphate isomerase, peptidase D, muscle creatine kinase, and several DNA repair genes (ERCC1, ERCC2, and XRCC1) appear as a conserved syntenic group on human chromosome 19. When X. clemenciae and X. milleri PstI endonuclease-digested genomic DNA was used in Southern analysis with a human ERCC2 DNA repair gene probe, a strongly cross-hybridizing restriction fragment length polymorphism was observed. Backcrosses to X. clemenciae from X. milleri × X. clemenciae F1 hybrids allowed tests for linkage of the ERCC2-like polymorphism to markers covering a large proportion of the genome. Statistically significant evidence for linkage was found only for ERCC2L1 and CKM (muscle creatine kinase), with a total of 41 parents and 2 recombinants (4.7% recombination, χ2 = 35.37, P < 0.001); no evidence for linkage to GPI and PEPD in linkage group IV was detected. The human chromosome 19 synteny of ERCC2 and CKM thus appears to be conserved in Xiphophorus, while other genes located nearby on human chromosome 19 are in a separate linkage group in this fish. If Xiphophorus gene arrangements prove to be primitive, human chromosome 19 may have arisen from chromosome fusion or translocation events at some point since divergence of mammals and fishes from a common ancestor.  相似文献

Ffh is a component of a bacterial ribonucleoprotein complex homologous to the signal recognition particle (SRP) of eukaryotes. It comprises three domains that mediate both binding to the hydrophobic signal sequence of the nascent polypeptide and the GTP-dependent interaction of Ffh with a structurally homologous GTPase of the SRP receptor. The X-ray structures of the two-domain 'NG' GTPase of Ffh in complex with Mg2+GDP and GDP have been determined at 2.0 A resolution. The structures explain the low nucleotide affinity of Ffh and locate two regions of structural mobility at opposite sides of the nucleotide-binding site. One of these regions includes highly conserved sequence motifs that presumably contribute to the structural trigger signaling the GTP-bound state. The other includes the highly conserved interface between the N and G domains, and supports the hypothesis that the N domain regulates or signals the nucleotide occupancy of the G domain.  相似文献

In the American lobster (Homarus americanus) the biogenic amines serotonin and octopamine appear to play important and opposite roles in the regulation of aggressive behavior, in the establishment and/or maintenance of dominant and subordinate behavioral states and in the modulation of the associated postural stances and escape responses. The octopamine-containing neurosecretory neurons in the thoracic regions of the lobster ventral nerve cord fall into two morphological subgroups, the root octopamine cells, a classical neurohemal group with release regions along second thoracic roots, and the claw octopamine cells, a group that selectively innervates the claws. Cells of both subgroups have additional sets of endings within neuropil regions of ganglia of the ventral nerve cord. Octopamine neurosecretory neurons generally are silent, but when spontaneously active or when activated, they show large overshooting action potentials with prominent after-hyperpolarizations. Autoinhibition after high-frequency firing, which is also seen in other crustacean neurosecretory cells, is readily apparent in these cells. The cells show no spontaneous synaptic activity, but appear to be excited by a unitary source. Stimulation of lateral or medial giant axons, which excite serotonergic cells yielded no response in octopaminergic neurosecretory cells and no evidence for direct interactions between pairs of octopamine neurons, or between the octopaminergic and the serotonergic sets of neurosecretory neurons was found.  相似文献
