A New Technology for Applanation Free Corneal Trephination: The Picosecond Infrared Laser (PIRL)

The impact of using a Femtosecond laser on final functional results of penetrating keratoplasty is low. The corneal incisions presented here result from laser ablations with ultrafast desorption by impulsive vibrational excitation (DIVE). The results of the current study are based on the first proof-of-principle experiments using a mobile, newly introduced picosecond infrared laser system, and indicate that wavelengths in the mid-infrared range centered at 3 μm are efficient for obtaining applanation-free deep cuts on porcine corneas.     

Comparison of Different Methods for the Evaluation of Treatment Effects from the Sleep EEG of Patients with Major Depression

In healthy subjects, sleep has a typical structure of three to five cyclic transitions between different sleep states. In major depression, this regular pattern is often destroyed but can be reestablished during successful treatment. The differences between healthy and abnormal sleep are generally assessed in a time-consuming process, which consists of determining the nightly variations of the sleep states (the hypnogram) based on visual inspection of the electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram, and electromyogram. In this study, three different methods of sleep EEG analysis (spectrum, outlier, and recurrence analysis) have been examined with regard to their ability to extract information about treatment effects in patients with major depression. Our data suggest that improved sleep patterns during treatment with antidepressant medication can be identified with an appropriate analysis of the EEG. By comparing different methods, we have found that many treatment effects identified by spectrum analysis can be reproduced by the much simpler technique of outlier analysis. Finally, the cyclic structure of sleep and its modification by antidepressant treatment is best illustrated by a non-linear approach, the so-called recurrence method.     

N,N′-carbonyldiimidazole as coupling reagent for the preparation of bovine serum albumin conjugates

This note describes the use of N,N′-carbonyldiimidazole for the coupling of prostaglandins and other carboxylic acids to the amino groups of bovine serum albumin.     

International Research Ethics

This article provides a critical overview of the most important issues pertaining to the ongoing debate on international research ethics. It critically describes three problems of continuing concern: 1) the question of whether the distinction between therapeutic and non-therapeutic research should be upheld; 2) the questions of whether the currently demanded best proven diagnostic and therapeutic method of treatment for all research subjects is feasible both in developed and in developing countries, and whether it should be upheld; 3) the questions of who owns international research ethics guidelines and regulatory frameworks and, how decisions about changes to such international guidelines can possibly be achieved, given that it seems to be the case that genuine disagreement about issues of content is possible and likely.     

Differentiated cells from BALB/c mice differ in their radiosensitivity

Various isolated cells of an inbred mouse strain (BALB/c) differed widely in their sensitivity to gamma irradiation: fibroblasts are five times more resistant than peripheral lymphocytes. Among lymphocytes, T cells are more resistant than B cells. Cell lines derived from the primary cells conserved their radiosensitivity. Cytofluorometric measurements show that the differential reaction of a cell to gamma irradiation can be detected already 2–3 h after the irradiation event. Radiation-sensitive cells are delayed for a longer time in S phase and G2 phase of the cell cycle than radiation-resistant cells. No difference in the capacity of the cells to perform single-strand break repair, double-strand break repair or unscheduled DNA synthesis could yet be detected.     

A short-oligonucleotide microarray that allows improved detection of gastrointestinal tract microbial communities

Background  

The human gastrointestinal (GI) tract contains a diverse collection of bacteria, most of which are unculturable by conventional microbiological methods. Increasingly molecular profiling techniques are being employed to examine this complex microbial community. The purpose of this study was to develop a microarray technique based on 16S ribosomal gene sequences for rapidly monitoring the microbial population of the GI tract.
