1. Temporal variation in ecosystem metabolism over a 15‐year period (1986–2000) was evaluated in a seventh order channelised gravel bed river (mean annual discharge 48.7 m3 s?1) of the Swiss Plateau. The river is subject to frequent disturbance by bed‐moving spates. Daily integrals of gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER) were calculated based on single‐station diel oxygen curves. 2. Seasonal decomposition of the time series of monthly metabolism rates showed that approximately 50% of the variation of GPP and ER can be attributed to season. Annual GPP averaged 5.0 ± 0.6 g O2 m?2 day?1 and showed no long‐term trend. 3. Ecosystem respiration, averaging 6.2 ± 1.4 g O2 m?2 day?1, declined from 8.8 to 4.1 g O2 m?2 day?1 during the 15‐year period. This significant trend paralleled a decline in nitrate and soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations, and the biochemical oxygen demand discharged by sewage treatment facilities upstream of the study reach. The ratio of GPP to ER (P/R) increased from 0.53 to about 1 as consequence of ER reduction. 4. Bed moving spates reduced GPP by 49% and ER by 19%. Postspate recovery of GPP was rapid between spring and autumn and slow during winter. Recovery of ER lacked any seasonal pattern. Annual patterns of daily GPP and to a minor extent of daily ER can be described as a sequence of recovery periods frequently truncated by spates. 5. The study showed that disturbance by frequent bed‐moving spates resulted in major stochastic variation in GPP and ER but annual patterns were still characterised by a distinct seasonal cycle. It also became evident that stream metabolism is a suitable method to assess effects of gradual changes in water quality.  相似文献

1. Periphyton chlorophyll a was measured at weekly or 2 weekly intervals from October 1992 to March 1994 at four sites in a Swiss prealpine gravel bed river that was frequently disturbed by unpredictable spates.
2. To evaluate the dominant processes that control periphyton biomass, measured data were compared with a set of simulations from an empirical dynamic periphyton model. Different combinations of process hypotheses were systematically activated and deactivated in order to assess their importance.
3. The simplest model leading to an acceptable agreement with measured data employs a biomass-dependent growth rate, a detachment rate directly proportional to discharge and biomass, and a catastrophic loss rate during bed moving spates. Terms describing light or temperature dependence had a minor effect on the model fit.
4. The model describes the temporal pattern of the periphyton biomass as a series of growth curves periodically truncated by spates. Within the uncertainties of the measurements, mainly caused by the spatial heterogeneity of periphyton, the biomass recovered along deterministic trajectories.
5. Sensitivity analyses with respect to model parameters and model structure showed that site-specific model parameters could not be unequivocally determined, and that the model yields similar results with slightly different formulations of processes. This indicates that the data base with respect to periphyton biomass was too small for a unique identification of model details but that the main conclusions on the significance of processes did not depend on arbitrary choices of the model formulation.  相似文献

The toxic heavy metal cadmium is taken up by plants and maycontaminate harvested parts of agricultural crops. In the experimentsreported here, cadmium was introduced together with markersfor phloem (rubidium) and xylem (strontium) transport, eitherinto intact shoots via a flap below the flag leaf node, or intodetached shoots via the cut stem. Cadmium introduced into intactplants was redistributed during maturation from the peduncleand the flag leaf lamina to the grain. In detached shoots, somecadmium was removed from the transpiration stream, as judgedfrom the comparison of shoots steam-girdled below the ear andof controls with an intact phloem in the peduncle. A minor quantityof cadmium was transported to the grain via the phloem in controlshoots while a high percentage of this element was retainedin the peduncle. The cadmium content of the grain increasedin response to the increased cadmium concentrations in the feedingsolutions (0.1 to 10 µM). Abstract: In areas with dense landownership patterns, management of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) depends upon collective decision making of landowners and hunters. To resolve conflicts associated with this commons dilemma, wildlife management associations (WMAs) have become a popular mechanism for coordinating wildlife management decisions in private land states, especially in Texas, USA. Social capital, represented by metrics such as trust, reciprocity, and community involvement, has been identified as an important determinant of the success of collaborative institutional arrangements. To determine the influence of social capital on the effectiveness of WMAs, we address 2 research questions: 1) do WMAs exhibit elements of social capital, and 2) what landowner characteristics affect elements of social capital within WMAs? We used a mail survey questionnaire to determine the effect of various factors on the activities and management practices in 4 WMAs in 2 regions in Texas: the Lower Post Oak Savannah (LPOS) and the Central Post Oak Savannah (CPOS). The LPOS landowners were members of larger associations, had generally acquired their land more recently, held more frequent meetings, and tended to have longer association membership than CPOS landowners, yet they exhibited lower social capital. The CPOS landowners owned significantly larger properties, and were predominantly absentee wealthy males that considered relaxation and hunting more important land uses than property ownership for a place to live. The smaller group size of the CPOS associations may be the most important factor in building and maintaining social capital. Intra-association trust, a primary measure of social capital, was positively influenced by the longevity of property ownership, the number of association meetings, the percentage of males in the association, and other factors. Conversely, negative influences on trust included absentee ownership and the proportion of woodland habitat present in each WMA. We suggest that deer are a common-pool resource whose populations are dependent upon collective action by stakeholders. Social capital building within landowner associations could facilitate the sustainable harvest of quality deer and possibly lead to cooperative management of other common-pool natural resources.  相似文献

1. In their natural state, river floodplains are composed of a complex mosaic of contrasting aquatic and terrestrial habitats. These habitats are expected to differ widely in their properties and corresponding ecological processes, although empirical data on their capacity to produce, store and transform organic matter and nutrients are limited. 2. The objectives of this study were (i) to quantify the spatiotemporal variation of respiration, a dominant carbon flux in ecosystems, in a complex river floodplain, (ii) to identify the environmental drivers of respiration within and among floodplain habitat types and (iii) to calculate whole‐floodplain respiration and to put these values into a global ecosystem context. 3. We measured soil and sediment respiration (sum of root and heterotrophic respiration; SR) throughout an annual cycle in two aquatic (pond and channel) and four terrestrial (gravel, large wood, vegetated island and riparian forest) floodplain habitat types in the island‐braided section of the near‐natural Tagliamento River (NE Italy). 4. Floodplain habitat types differed greatly in substratum composition (soil to coarse gravel), organic matter content (0.63 to 4.1% ash‐free dry mass) and temperature (seasonal range per habitat type: 8.6 to 33.1 °C). Average annual SR ranged from 0.54 ± 1.56 (exposed gravel) to 3.94 ± 3.72 μmol CO2 m?2 s?1 (vegetated islands) indicating distinct variation in respiration within and among habitat types. Temperature was the most important predictor of SR. However, the Q10 value ranged from 1.62 (channel habitat) to 4.57 (riparian forest), demonstrating major differences in habitat‐specific temperature sensitivity in SR. 5. Total annual SR in individual floodplain habitats ranged from 160 (ponds) to 1205 g C m?2 (vegetated islands) and spanned almost the entire range of global ecosystem respiration, from deserts to tropical forests.  相似文献
