Current issues in fish welfare   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Human beings may affect the welfare of fish through fisheries, aquaculture and a number of other activities. There is no agreement on just how to weigh the concern for welfare of fish against the human interests involved, but ethical frameworks exist that suggest how this might be approached. Different definitions of animal welfare focus on an animal's condition, on its subjective experience of that condition and/or on whether it can lead a natural life. These provide different, legitimate, perspectives, but the approach taken in this paper is to focus on welfare as the absence of suffering. An unresolved and controversial issue in discussions about animal welfare is whether non‐human animals exposed to adverse experiences such as physical injury or confinement experience what humans would call suffering. The neocortex, which in humans is an important part of the neural mechanism that generates the subjective experience of suffering, is lacking in fish and non‐mammalian animals, and it has been argued that its absence in fish indicates that fish cannot suffer. A strong alternative view, however, is that complex animals with sophisticated behaviour, such as fish, probably have the capacity for suffering, though this may be different in degree and kind from the human experience of this state. Recent empirical studies support this view and show that painful stimuli are, at least, strongly aversive to fish. Consequently, injury or experience of other harmful conditions is a cause for concern in terms of welfare of individual fish. There is also growing evidence that fish can experience fear‐like states and that they avoid situations in which they have experienced adverse conditions. Human activities that potentially compromise fish welfare include anthropogenic changes to the environment, commercial fisheries, recreational angling, aquaculture, ornamental fish keeping and scientific research. The resulting harm to fish welfare is a cost that must be minimized and weighed against the benefits of the activity concerned. Wild fish naturally experience a variety of adverse conditions, from attack by predators or conspecifics to starvation or exposure to poor environmental conditions. This does not make it acceptable for humans to impose such conditions on fish, but it does suggest that fish will have mechanisms to cope with these conditions and reminds us that pain responses are in some cases adaptive (for example, suppressing feeding when injured). In common with all vertebrates, fish respond to environmental challenges with a series of adaptive neuro‐endocrine adjustments that are collectively termed the stress response. These in turn induce reversible metabolic and behavioural changes that make the fish better able to overcome or avoid the challenge and are undoubtedly beneficial, in the short‐term at least. In contrast, prolonged activation of the stress response is damaging and leads to immuno‐suppression, reduced growth and reproductive dysfunction. Indicators associated with the response to chronic stress (physiological endpoints, disease status and behaviour) provide a potential source of information on the welfare status of a fish. The most reliable assessment of well‐being will be obtained by examining a range of informative measures and statistical techniques are available that enable several such measures to be combined objectively. A growing body of evidence tells us that many human activities can harm fish welfare, but that the effects depend on the species and life‐history stage concerned and are also context‐dependent. For example, in aquaculture, adverse effects related to stocking density may be eliminated if good water quality is maintained. At low densities, bad water quality may be less likely to arise whereas social interactions may cause greater welfare problems. A number of key differences between fish and birds and mammals have important implications for their welfare. Fish do not need to fuel a high body temperature, so the effects of food deprivation on welfare are not so marked. For species that live naturally in large shoals, low rather than high densities may be harmful. On the other hand, fish are in intimate contact with their environment through the huge surface area of their gills, so they are vulnerable to poor water quality and water borne pollutants. Extrapolation between taxa is dangerous and general frameworks for ensuring welfare in other vertebrate animals need to be modified before they can be usefully applied to fish. The scientific study of fish welfare is at an early stage compared with work on other vertebrates and a great deal of what we need to know is yet to be discovered. It is clearly the case that fish, though different from birds and mammals, however, are sophisticated animals, far removed from unfeeling creatures with a 15 s memory of popular misconception. A heightened appreciation of these points in those who exploit fish and in those who seek to protect them would go a long way towards improving fish welfare.  相似文献

A technique has been developed to represent erythemally effective ultraviolet radiation exposure within a school environment. The technique models the erythemally effective exposure onto a horizontal plane representation of a mapped school environment located in Hervey Bay (25 degrees S, 153 degrees E), Australia. The input parameters used to model the ultraviolet exposures received within the school playground included the measured sky view, ground albedo and standing surface albedo. Estimates of the erythemally effective ultraviolet exposure received within the school playground during morning tea and lunch time meal breaks during a winter and summer school day are presented. The influence of tree shade and building structure was found to vary significantly with solar zenith angle modelled over the winter and summer school meal break times with horizontal plane exposures predicted to vary from between 0 and 7 SED at different locations within the playground. The technique presented provides a method that can be followed to examine the effect of surrounding buildings and surface structures of real environments on the predicted horizontal plane ultraviolet exposure.  相似文献

The present study characterizes four potentially informative polymorphic bands of 5.2, 2.3, 1.9, and 1.2 kb, detected by Southern blot hybridization of Eco RI digests of human DNA using HK101/80 (an immunoglobulin V I probe). These restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) show Mendelian segregation and they are linked to each other and to Km(1), the allotypic marker on the kappa constant region. There is strong linkage disequilibrium between the 2.3 and 1.2 kb polymorphisms. A 0.7 kb Pst I polymorphic band and a 2.9 kb Sac I polymorphic band were also identified; the latter may reflect a region of tandem repeats in the V region. No bands representing the alternative forms of any of the polymorphic restriction sites were identified. This implies either that genes are missing from the V repertoire or that such bands are hidden because of comigration of fragments due to conservation of restriction sites. Evidence for comigration of fragments was obtained from independent V clones and suggests that dark bands on Southern blots of Pst I digests must often represent several superimposed genes which have conserved restriction sites. The demonstration of RFLP within the V region provides circumstantial evidence for polymorphic variation in the repertoire of V structural genes. The RFLP reported here should be useful as genetic markers in future studies on the immune response and disease susceptibility in man.  相似文献

The effects of immersion and exercise on prolactin during pregnancy   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Prolactin is an important hormone during pregnancy, affecting mother, fetus, and amniotic fluid volume. Immersion is known to affect prolactin levels significantly. To determine the effect of immersion and exercise on the prolactin response during pregnancy, we examined serum prolactin levels at 15, 25, and 35 weeks' gestation and 10 weeks post partum. Twelve women completed 20 min land rest, 20 min immersion in 30 degrees C water to the xiphoid, and 20 min exercise in the water at 60% VO2max. Resting prolactin levels were 1.91 +/- 0.32, 4.55 +/- 0.5, and 5.85 +/- 0.27 nmol.l-1 +/- standard error of the mean at 15, 25, and 35 weeks' gestation, respectively. Postpartum lactating women had a resting mean prolactin level of 3.95 +/- 1.6 versus 0.22 +/- 0.4 nmol.l-1 in non-lactating women. Prolactin levels declined significantly during immersion even after correction for dilution by plasma volume shifts. The immersion response was inversely related to the duration of pregnancy with 29%, 22%, and 12% drops during 15-, 25- and 35-week trials, respectively. Compared to rest, exercise prolactin levels remained depressed during the 15th and 25th week trials. We hypothesize that immersion in water caused prolactin levels to decline.  相似文献

The control of bud dormancy in potato tubers   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tuber buds normally remain dormant through the growing season until several weeks after harvest. In the cultivar Majestic, this innate dormancy persisted for 9 to 12 weeks in storage at 10° C, but only 3 to 4 weeks when the tubers were stored at 2° C. At certain stages, supplying cytokinins to tubers with innately dormant buds induced sprout growth within 2 d. The growth rate was comparable to that of buds whose innate dormancy had been lost naturally. Cytokinin-treatment did not accelerate the rates of cell division and cell expansion in buds whose innate dormancy had already broken naturally. Gibberellic acid did not induce sprout growth in buds with innate dormancy. We conclude that cytokinins may well be the primary factor in the switch from innate dormancy to the non-dormant state in potato tuber buds, but probably do not control the subsequent sprout growth.Abbreviations tio 6ade 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-trans-2-enyl amino)purine, zeatin - tio6ado 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-trans-2-enyl amino)-9--D-ribofuranosyl purine, zeatin riboside  相似文献

A radioimmunoassay, combined with high-performance liquid chromatography, has been used to analyse the zeatin-type cytokinins of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Majestic) tubers and tuber buds throughout growth and storage. During tuber growth, zeatin riboside was the predominant cytokinin detected in all tissues. Immediately after harvest, the total cytokinin concentration fell dramatically in the storage tissue, largely as a consequence of the disappearance of zeatin riboside. During storage, levels of cytokinins in the storage tissue remained relatively constant, but increased in the tuber buds. In the buds of tubers stored at 2°C there was a 20-to 50-fold increase in total cytokinin over six weeks, coinciding with the natural break of innate dormancy. At 10°C the rise in the level of bud cytokinins was slower, correlating with the longer duration of innate dormancy. Injecting unlabelled cytokinins into tubers in amounts known to induce sprouting gave rise to increases in cytokinin concentrations in the buds of the same order as the increase associated with the natural break of dormancy. Metabolism of injected cytokinins was greater in non-dormant than in dormant tubers. The roles of cytokinin concentration and the sensitivity of the buds to cytokinin in the control of dormancy are discussed.Abbreviations CK cytokinin - FW fresh weight - HPLC high-performance liquid chromatography - RIA radioimmunoassay - tio6ade 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-trans-2-enylamino)-purine=zeatin - tio6adeglc9 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-trans-2-enylamino)-9--D-glucopyranosyl purine=zeatin-9-glucoside - tio6ado 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-trans-2-enylamino)-9--D-ribofuranosyl purine=zeatin riboside - tio6ado-[3H]-diol a radioactive derivative of zeatin riboside, synthesised by periodate-oxidation followed by [3H]NaBH4-reduction - tio6AMP 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-trans-2-enylamino)-9--D-5-phosphoribofuranosyl purine=zeatin riboside 5-monophosphate - t(ioglc4)6ade 6-(4-O--D-glucopyranosyl-3-methylbut-trans-2-enylamino)-purine=zeatin-O-glucoside  相似文献
