Purpose
To determine whether the width of the retinal artery (RA) trajectory was associated with the presence of a macular hole (MH).Methods
A retrospective cross sectional case-control study was performed. The fundus photographs were rotated 90 degrees, and the coordinates of the best fit curve of the RA trajectory were determined automatically based on these plots using the ImageJ program. The converted coordinates were fit to a second degree polynomial (ax2/100 + bx + c) equation. The width and steepness of the RA trajectory, “a”, of the eyes with a MH eye were compared to that of the fellow eyes.Results
One hundred and ten eyes of 55 consecutive patients (30 women) with a unilateral MH and healthy fellow eyes were analyzed. The mean age was 64.9 years (range 47-81 years). The constant ‘a’ was significantly smaller in eyes with a MH than that of the fellow eyes (0.379 ± 0.094 vs 0.416 ± 0.121, P = 0.001, paired t test), indicating that the RA trajectory was wider in the MH eyes than in the fellow eyes. There was a significant correlation between the axial length and ‘a’ of the RA trajectory in the MH eyes (R = 0.273, P = 0.044) and in the fellow eyes (R = 0.356, P = 0.008; Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient).Conclusions
Because eyes with a MH have a significantly wider and flatter RA trajectory, there may be greater traction on the fovea which is located between the RA arches. The causative role of this finding is still unclear. 相似文献4.

Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) enhances the formation of new alveolar bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament (PDL) in periodontal defect models. However, the mechanism through which FGF-2 acts in periodontal regeneration in vivo has not been fully clarified yet. To reveal the action mechanism, the formation of regenerated tissue and gene expression at the early phase were analyzed in a beagle dog 3-wall periodontal defect model. FGF-2 (0.3%) or the vehicle (hydroxypropyl cellulose) only were topically applied to the defect in FGF-2 and control groups, respectively. Then, the amount of regenerated tissues and the number of proliferating cells at 3, 7, 14, and 28 days and the number of blood vessels at 7 days were quantitated histologically. Additionally, the expression of osteogenic genes in the regenerated tissue was evaluated by real-time PCR at 7 and 14 days. Compared with the control, cell proliferation around the existing bone and PDL, connective tissue formation on the root surface, and new bone formation in the defect at 7 days were significantly promoted by FGF-2. Additionally, the number of blood vessels at 7 days was increased by FGF-2 treatment. At 28 days, new cementum and PDL were extended by FGF-2. Moreover, FGF-2 increased the expression of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and osteoblast differentiation markers (osterix, alkaline phosphatase, and osteocalcin) in the regenerated tissue. We revealed the facilitatory mechanisms of FGF-2 in periodontal regeneration in vivo. First, the proliferation of fibroblastic cells derived from bone marrow and PDL was accelerated and enhanced by FGF-2. Second, angiogenesis was enhanced by FGF-2 treatment. Finally, osteoblastic differentiation and bone formation, at least in part due to BMP-2 production, were rapidly induced by FGF-2. Therefore, these multifaceted effects of FGF-2 promote new tissue formation at the early regeneration phase, leading to enhanced formation of new bone, cementum, and PDL. 相似文献

To clear whether podoplanin-positive cancer stem cells in squamous cell carcinoma have higher invasion activity during a fibroblasts-dependent invasion. A collagen gel invasion assay was performed using fluorescent ubiquitination-based cell cycle indicator-labeled A431 cells. The total number and number of invading cells in S/G2/M phase were counted using time-lapse imaging cocultured with fibroblasts. There was no significant difference between the number of invading podoplanin-positive and negative A431 cells when fibroblasts did not exist. On the contrary, the number of invading podoplanin-positive cells was significantly higher when fibroblasts existed. The frequency of cells in S/G2/M phase among invasion was no difference. Knockdown of podoplanin decreased the number of invaded A431 cells significantly when fibroblasts existed. Podoplanin-positive A431 cells display higher invasion activity when fibroblasts exist, suggesting that some biological functions of cancer stem cells might become evident only within the fibrous tumor microenvironment. 相似文献

To quantitatively assess the arteriovenous distribution of hemodynamic parameters throughout the microvascular network of
the human retina, we constructed a retinal microcirculatory model consisting of a dichotomous symmetric branching system.
This system is characterized by a diameter exponent of 2.85, instead of 3 as dictated by Murray’s law, except for the capillary
networks. The value of 2.85 was the sum of a fractal dimension (1.70) and a branch exponent (1.15) of the retinal vasculature.
Following the feeding artery (central retinal artery), each bifurcation was recursively developed at a distance of an individual
branch length [L(r) = 7.4r
1.15] by a centrifugal scheme. The venular tree was formed in the same way. Using this model, we evaluated hemodynamic parameters,
including blood pressure, blood flow, blood velocity, shear rate, and shear stress, within the retinal microcirculatory network
as a function of vessel diameter. The arteriovenous distributions of blood pressure and velocity in the simulation were consistent
with in vivo measurements in the human retina and other vascular beds of small animals. We therefore conclude that the current
theoretical model was useful for quantifying hemodynamics as a function of vessel diameter within the retinal microvascular

AimsThe aim of this study is to investigate the expression and cytoprotective function of a 72-kDa heat shock protein (HSP72) using a reflux esophagitis model in rats.Main methodsExpression of HSP60, HSP72, and HSP90 in rat esophageal mucosa was evaluated by Western blot analysis before and after hyperthermia (42.5 °C, 20 min). Rats received the operation to produce reflux esophagitis with or without pretreatment with hyperthermia to induce HSPs. The esophageal mucosal damage was evaluated 12 h after the operation.Key findingsExpression of HSP72 was significantly increased by hyperthermia in rat esophageal mucosa. Reflux esophagitis was dramatically prevented when HSP72 was preinduced by hyperthermia. Furthermore, activation of TNF-α and IL-1β in esophageal mucosa was also suppressed.SignificanceThese results suggested that hyperthermia protects the esophageal mucosa in reflux esophagitis model by inducing HSP72 and suppressing proinflammatory cytokine activation.
