Bacopa monniera Wettst. (BM, syn. Herpestis monniera L; Scrophulariaceae), is an Ayurvedic drug used as a rasayana. Its fresh juice was earlier reported to have significant antiulcerogenic activity. In continuation, methanolic extract of BM (BME) standardized to bacoside-A content (percentage-38.0 ± 0.9), when given in the dose of 10–50 mg/kg, twice daily for 5 days, showed dose-dependent anti-ulcerogenic on various gastric ulcer models induced by ethanol, aspirin, 2 h cold restraint stress and 4 h pylorus ligation. BME in the dose of 20 mg/kg, given for 10 days, twice daily showed healing effects against 50% acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers. Further work was done to investigate the possible mechanisms of its action by studying its effect on various mucosal offensive acid-pepsin secretion and defensive factors like mucin secretion, mucosal cell shedding, cell proliferation and antioxidant activity in rats. BME 20 mg/kg showed no effect on acid-pepsin secretion, increased mucin secretion, while it decreased cell shedding with no effect on cell proliferation. BME showed significant antioxidant effect per se and in stressed animals. Thus, the gastric prophylactic and curative effects of BME may be due to its predominant effect on mucosal defensive factors.  相似文献

Abstract Photoproduction of hydrogen, nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction) and hydrogenase activity (methylene blue dye reduction) were studied in free and alginate immobilized whole cells of a purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides O.U. 001. Four-fold increase in hydrogen production, two-fold increase in nitrogenase activity and 1.2-fold increase in the hydrogenase activity were observed in immobilized cells compared to free cells. Effect of various inhibitors (CO and C2H2) and electron donor (H2) on the above three functions by free and immobilized cells has also been studied.  相似文献

Mesophyll derived protoplasts ofCatharanthus roseus cv. Little pinkie were fused with protoplasts derived from an habituated cell line ofC. roseus. Polyethylene glycol was used as agglutinating agent while fusions were induced by square pulses. Best results were obtained by fusing protoplasts from primary leaves with those from three-day-old cell cultures. Adding calcium ions considerably enhanced heterofusion rate. Good cell viabilities indicated that this fusion process was not cytotoxic. The heterofusion frequency was up to 10% or more. A controlled environment experiment investigated whether thered:far-red (R:FR) ratio of light at the apical bud of the mainstolon could alter plant morphogenesis in clonal cuttings ofwhite clover (Trifolium repens L.) The apical bud included theapical meristem, five to six developing leaf primordia withassociated axillary bud primordia and stipules and the firstemerged folded leaf until development was greater than 0·3on the Carlson scale. Three light regimes were imposed on theapical bud by collimating light from R or FR light-emittingdiodes so that the R:FR ratio of light incident at the apicalbud was set at 0·25, 1·6 or 2·1, withoutsignificantly altering photosynthetically active radiation.The effect of these light regimes on white clover seedling growthwas also tested. At a low R:FR ratio seedling hypocotyl and cotyledon lengthswere significantly longer. However, with the cuttings, the lighttreatments did not alter node appearance rate or internode lengthof the main stolon, petiole length, area of leaves or totalshoot dry matter. There was one significant photomorphogeneticresponse in the cuttings, a delay of 0·5 of a phyllochronin the appearance of branches from axillary buds in the lowR:FR ratio treatment relative to the other treatments. Wherebranch appearance was delayed plants had fewer branches. Thisdifference could be ascribed solely to a delay in branch appearanceas there were no significant treatment effects on either theinitiation of axillary bud primordia within the apical bud,the probability of branching or on the rate of growth of branchesafter appearance. Additional observation on the formation of humoral immunity to hepatitis A virus has been carried out in 2,375 adolescents aged 15-17 years and belonging to 12 groups at 3 areas of the USSR. This observation has shown that in the presence of a high level of the immune stratum the spread of infection occurs, as a rule, outside the group under observation. Besides, as revealed in this study, the risk of seroconversion and the loss of specific antibodies are, respectively, directly and inversely related to the level of the immune stratum in the group. The level of the immune stratum in a given age group supposedly reflects the intensity of the development of the epidemic process at a definite area.  相似文献

Purified suspensions of highly viable parenchymal, endothelial, and Kupffer cells were prepared from rat liver. In the liver cell classes, total activities of acid phosphatase were determined with 4-methylumbelliferylphosphate, 1-naphthylphosphate, and p-nitrophenylphosphate. The specific enzyme activities were different for each type of cell and, even within one cell class, the enzymes showed different conversion rates for the three substrates. These results indicate the presence of multiple forms of acid phosphatase enzymes in each cell class. The inhibiting effects of tartrate, fluoride, and alloxan on the acid phosphatase activities were investigated. Depending on the substrate used, the inhibitors inactivated the enzymes at different rates, which also indicates the presence of multiple forms of acid phosphatase enzymes in the liver cell classes. By means of an isoelectric focusing technique, acid phosphatase enzymes could be separated on the basis of their differences in isoelectric points. One form with an isoelectric point around 4 is found in Kupffer cells, whereas another form with an isoelectric point of about 7 is found in parenchymal cells. Endothelial cells possess both forms. These findings suggest a specificity in the function of this lysosomal enzyme in each cell class.  相似文献
