Recent evidence suggests that humans can form and later retrieve new semantic relations unconsciously by way of hippocampus—the key structure also recruited for conscious relational (episodic) memory. If the hippocampus subserves both conscious and unconscious relational encoding/retrieval, one would expect the hippocampus to be place of unconscious-conscious interactions during memory retrieval. We tested this hypothesis in an fMRI experiment probing the interaction between the unconscious and conscious retrieval of face-associated information. For the establishment of unconscious relational memories, we presented subliminal (masked) combinations of unfamiliar faces and written occupations (“actor” or “politician”). At test, we presented the former subliminal faces, but now supraliminally, as cues for the reactivation of the unconsciously associated occupations. We hypothesized that unconscious reactivation of the associated occupation—actor or politician—would facilitate or inhibit the subsequent conscious retrieval of a celebrity’s occupation, which was also actor or politician. Depending on whether the reactivated unconscious occupation was congruent or incongruent to the celebrity’s occupation, we expected either quicker or delayed conscious retrieval process. Conscious retrieval was quicker in the congruent relative to a neutral baseline condition but not delayed in the incongruent condition. fMRI data collected during subliminal face-occupation encoding confirmed previous evidence that the hippocampus was interacting with neocortical storage sites of semantic knowledge to support relational encoding. fMRI data collected at test revealed that the facilitated conscious retrieval was paralleled by deactivations in the hippocampus and neocortical storage sites of semantic knowledge. We assume that the unconscious reactivation has pre-activated overlapping relational representations in the hippocampus reducing the neural effort for conscious retrieval. This finding supports the notion of synergistic interactions between conscious and unconscious relational memories in a common, cohesive hippocampal-neocortical memory space. 相似文献

Six non-pregnant cows were allocated into 3 groups. Group 1 comprised a pair of lactating cows, whereas groups 2 and 3 each comprised a pair of non-lactating cows. The cows in groups 1 and 2 were dosed intraruminally by stomach tube with zinc oxide at 120 mg Zn per kg of bodyweight at weekly intervals for a period of 33 days. Each cow received a total of 4 doses of zinc oxide. Group 3 served as non-treated control group. Blood samples were collected from all 6 cows daily. Serum was analysed for concentration of calcium. Within 12–24 h of each zinc oxide administration the serum calcium of the lactating cows dropped dramatically indicating the existence of an antagonistic effect between Zn and Ca. The first Zn induced hypocalcaemic episode in the lactating cows was followed by a rise in serum calcium to a level above the pre-dosing level and above the mean value of the control group. The depth of the hypocalcaemic response decreased with the number of zinc oxide dosings. This effect was explained as a response from the stimulation of the calcium homeostatic mechanisms. In the Zn dosed non-lactating cows responses were similar but less clear. The perspective of these findings is discussed in relation to resistance towards parturient hypocalcaemia. 相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die Theorie der reversiblen Plastidenmetamorphose wird kritisiert; an ihrer Stelle wird das Prinzip der monotropen Plastidenentwicklung vorgeschlagen und in einem Schema dargestellt. Die physiologische Tätigkeit der Chloroplasten erfolgt in drei Stufen: 1. Chlorophyll- und Granensynthese, 2. Stärkesynthese und 3. übersteigerte Carotinoidsynthese. Die erste Stufe kann wegfallen, worauf der Proplastid zu einem Leukoplasten wird; die Stufen können sich aber auch im umgekehrten Sinne folgen, wenn ein Leukoplast nachträglich ergrünt. Nie aber wird man feststellen können, daß Granen- und Stärkesynthese gleichzeitig erfolgen.Die dritte Stufe muß als Alterserscheinung der Plastiden betrachtet werden. Die granulären Chromoplasten können noch als normale Plastiden aufgefaßt werden, die ihr Chlorophyll abgebaut haben. 16- and 4-week-old intact and adrenalectomized rats have been treated with different doses of the three glucocorticoids hydrocortisone, prednisolone and dexamethasone by gavage. The delayed feedback effect on plasma ACTH and corticosterone response to an ether stress have been assessed. Almost complete suppression of corticosterone response 20 min after an ether stress and an ACTH suppression to 20% of control values 5 min after an ether stress were observed with 25 micrograms of dexamethasone, 10 mg of prednisolone and 20 mg of hydrocortisone. Although the percent inhibition of corticosterone and ACTH response to stress was comparable, a striking dissociation of the ACTH and corticosterone release was observed in terms of absolute concentrations. A mean ACTH concentration of 462 ng/l after 25 micrograms of dexamethasone was measured together with a barely measurable corticosterone concentration of 3 micrograms%. Similarly, after 10 mg of prednisolone, the mean ACTH concentration was 404 ng/l, whilst the mean corticosterone concentration was 3 micrograms%. This dissociation demonstrates that the corticosterone concentration on its own does not necessarily reflect the ACTH release. At 4 weeks of age, the ACTH response to stress is more difficult to suppress than in adult animals. This is more obvious after adrenalectomy, where the excessive ACTH secretion was less inhibited by all glucocorticoids used. The time between the last steroid gavage and stress must be considered. In 4-week-old animals the ACTH response 16 h after 12.5 micrograms of dexamethasone was inhibited by 22%, whereas 4 h after the same dexamethasone dose the inhibition was 85%.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Strains of with fusions between the structural genes and the promoter region of the fumarate reductase system were constructed from a parental strain deleted in the native operon. Like fumarate reductase in wild-type cells, β-galactosidase in these fusion strains is inducible by fumarate, but only under anaerobic conditions. From one of these strains, three classes of mutants altered in the expression of the hybrid operon were isolated. By anaerobic selection for growth on lactose in the absence of fumarate, mutants that synthesize β-galactosidase constitutively both aerobically and anaerobically were obtained. By aerobic selection for growth on lactose in the presence of fumarate, mutants that are inducible in the enzyme both aerobically and anaerobically and mutants that are inducible in the enzyme only aerobically were obtained. The regulatory behaviors of the mutants studied suggest that substrate and respiratory control of the expression of the fumarate reductase complex are mechanistically connected. 相似文献
