Altered thyroid hormone binding to plasma lipoproteins in the syndrome of resistance to thyroid hormones.

Lipoproteins, especially HDL, are carriers of a small fraction of the thyroid hormones in plasma and participate in the intracellular transport of T4. In previous work we showed that a brief period of hypothyroidism alters the hormone distribution among the lipoproteins, causing a decrease in VLDL and LDL binding despite a relative increase in VLDL and LDL cholesterol, an increase in HDL binding, and a reversal of T4 and T3 binding to the smallest HDL size subgroup. The present study of three patients with thyroid hormone resistance and largely compensated hypothyroidism showed thyroid hormone distribution that differed markedly from both normal and hypothyroid subjects. The most striking difference was a much lower binding of both T4 and T3 to HDL and a much higher binding to LDL. If confirmed in a larger group of patients, this might serve as a marker for thyroid hormone resistance.     

Cooperation without Culture? The Null Effect of Generalized Trust on Intentional Homicide: A Cross-National Panel Analysis, 1995–2009

Sociologists, political scientists, and economists all suggest that culture plays a pivotal role in the development of large-scale cooperation. In this study, I used generalized trust as a measure of culture to explore if and how culture impacts intentional homicide, my operationalization of cooperation. I compiled multiple cross-national data sets and used pooled time-series linear regression, single-equation instrumental-variables linear regression, and fixed- and random-effects estimation techniques on an unbalanced panel of 118 countries and 232 observations spread over a 15-year time period. Results suggest that culture and large-scale cooperation form a tenuous relationship, while economic factors such as development, inequality, and geopolitics appear to drive large-scale cooperation.     

Synthesis and NMR spectra of 13C-labeled coenzyme A esters

The synthesis of coenzyme A thioesters of 13C-labeled acetate, propionate, succinate, and methyl malonate is described. The average yields were 94%. The 13C-NMR spectra were determined to provide a reference for the resonance positions of these metabolites. The synthesis of coenzyme thioesters of small-molecular-weight acids labeled with 13C has not been described previously, nor have the resonance positions been previously reported.
