A note on colony-blot double-stain method for isolation of Vibrio cholerae serotype 01 from specimens heavily contaminated with non-01 Vibrio cholerae

A colony-blot double-stain method was developed to identify individual colonies of Vibrio cholerae serotype 01 (pandemic strain) in mixed bacterial cultures on solid media. The colonies are transferred from agar to nitrocellulose membranes for an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Colonies of 01 vibrios bind the enzyme-linked antibodies and appear as brown dots on the membranes; pale black dots develop at the site of replicated colonies of other bacteria as a result of the activity of endogenous oxidase-like enzymes and serve as reference points. The results indicate that the colony-blot double-stain method is useful for the isolation of colonies of V. cholerae serotype 01 in specimens that are heavily contaminated with non-01 vibrios.     

Hopenol-b,a triterpene alcohol from Euphorbia supina

In addition to the known triterpene motiol, hopenol-b (hop-22(29)-en-3β-ol) was isolated from the whole herb of Euphorbia supina. It has not been found previously in nature, though it has been prepared by both synthetic and biosynthetic methods.     

Fractal property of eye movements in schizophrenia

 On the basis of a temporal model of animal behavior we conducted temporal analysis of eye movements in schizophrenic subjects (n=10) and normal controls (n=10). We found a fractal property in schizophrenic subjects, the fixation time of eye movement during reading ambiguous and difficult sentences showing a clear inverse power law distribution. Abstract Stationary-phase cells of Cryptococcus neoformans displayed two morphological characteristics: virtually all the cells were unbudded even in the early stationary phase and even when grown in rich media, and average cell size increased from that of exponential-phase cells. DNA contents for small and large stationary-phase cells were determined by quantitative fluorescence microscopy after DNA staining with propidium iodide or DAPI. Small cells contained G, DNA, whereas large unbudded cells had either a G₂ or G₁ DNA content, indicating that Cr. neoformans can enter into the stationary phase from either the G₁ or G₂ period.
