Middle Eocene, non-marine sediments from southern England contain examples of Teredolites borings in two contrasting palaeoenvironmental settings, viz.: (A) as in situ borings in an allochthonous lignite in an abandoned river channel and (B) as bored logs in cross-bedded fluvial sandstones of probable point-bar origin. The lignite is 0.30 m thick, of which the upper 0.20 m is intensely bored. Rounded pebbles of ?charcoal at its base also show small borings. A log in a fluvial sandstone shows densely-packed. radial club-shaped borings. now filled with sandstone. The wood substrate has subsequently been oxidized away. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed account of Teredolites from an ancient freshwater setting.  相似文献

Little is known about the influence of genetic architecture on local adaptation. We investigated the genetic architecture of the rapid contemporary evolution of mouthparts, the flight polymorphism and life history traits in the soapberry bug Jadera haematoloma (Hemiptera) using laboratory selection. The mouthparts of these seed‐feeding bugs have adapted in 40–50 years by decreasing in length following novel natural selection induced by a host switch to the seeds of an introduced tree with smaller fruits than those of the native host vine. Laboratory selection on beak length in both an ancestral population feeding on the native host and a derived population feeding on the introduced host reveals genetic variance allowing a rapid response (heritabilities of 0.51–0.87) to selection for either longer or shorter beaks. This selection resulted in reverse evolution by restoring long beaks in the derived population and forward evolution by re‐creating short beaks in the ancestral bugs. There were strong genetic correlations (0.68–0.84) in both populations between beak lengths and the frequency of flight morphs, with short beaks associated with short wings. The results reveal a genetically interrelated set of adaptive multivariate traits including both beak length and flight morph. This suite of traits reflects host plant patchiness and seeding phenology. Weaker evidence suggests that egg mass and early egg production may be elements of the same suite. Reversible or forward evolution thus may occur in a broad set of genetically correlated multivariate traits undergoing rapid contemporary adaptation to altered local environments.  相似文献

1. Recent observations of actuarial senescence – an increase in mortality rate with age – have challenged the assertion that the brevity of adult insect life spans precludes ageing. 2. Here the rate of senescence in 22 species of Lepidoptera was quantified by fitting demographic models to adult survivorship data drawn from a range of field and laboratory studies. 3. Senescence was evident in all 22 species investigated, with a model of age‐related mortality consistently fitting the survivorship curves significantly better than an alternative model which assumes constant mortality. 4. The rates of senescence varied significantly among species. The rates of senescence also differed significantly between sexes for all species tested, but not in a consistent way.  相似文献

From compartmental analysis of 15N elution measurements, concentrationsand fluxes of NH+4 and NO3 were estimated for corticalcells in excised root segments, when bathed in a complete nutrientsolution, in which 20 mol m–3 NH4+ or NO3 werethe single N sources. The results were compared with those fornutrient solution containing 20 mol m–3 NH4NO3. No nitratereductase activity was detected in the roots but rapid assimilationof NH4+ occurred, due to glutamine synthetase activity. Theefflux curves for NH4+, on a 'µg 15N remaining againsttime' basis, deviated from the criteria determining conformityto first order kinetics, since the slowest rate constant wasan order of magnitude lower than that exhibited by the curvefor efflux versus time. The data were transformed to conformto the appropriate criteria, revealing a large slowly exchangingpool equated with assimilated NH4+. The presence of NO3had little effect on NH4+ uptake and exchange, but NH4+ suppressedNOj uptake and reduced exchange across plasmalemma and tonoplast. It was established that NH4+ absorption was an active process. However, NH4+ entering and leaving the vacuole was overestimated, since the flux equation used did not differentiate between total15NH4 influx at the plasmalemma and that at the tonoplast, afterassimilation. The only active NO3 transfer was influxat the plasmalemma. The results were compared with those ofothers using13N and 36C1O3 analogues to measure NH4+ and NO3fluxes in cereal roots. Abstract Habitat usage characteristics of two species of native murid rodents, Pseudomys gracilicaudatus and Rattus lutreolus were investigated on an area of coastal heathland at Myall Lakes National Park. A grid of 151 trap stations comprising 17 traplines was positioned across a mosaic of habitats. At each trap station 19 structural vegetation and physical variables known to affect the microdistribution of small mammals were measured. Multivariate statistical procedures identified those microhabitat variables that contribute to individual species' habitat use and habitat partitioning, and reduce potential competition for space. Cluster analysis classified trap stations into one of six habitat types that were mapped on the study area, identifying a heterogeneous assemblage of interlocking habitats. The pattern is a consequence of topographic variation on the site and, to a lesser extent, its fire history. Trapping results show P. gracilicaudatus and R. lutreolus exhibit similar macrohabitat selection, preferring topographically low habitats, with both species predominantly occupying short dense heath with dense sedge cover. The high overlap in macrohabitat use is greatly reduced when considered trap station by trap station, so that discriminant function and multiple regression analyses demonstrate marked microhabitat selection. Elevation was a highly significant variable, accounting for 41% and 27% of the variance in the habitat used by P. gracilicaudatus and R. lutreolus, respectively. This variable represents a soil moisture gradient that determines changes in the floristic and structural components of the biotic environment. Two other structural vegetation variables and vegetation height contributed 30% of the variance in P. gracilicaudatus distribution. Sedge cover was found to be significant and explained 13% of the variance in R. lutreolus distribution. Within-habitat separation was explained best with a linear combination of variables in a discriminant function, rather than by any single variable. Differential microhabitat selection, interference competition and diet separation appear to be the major factors facilitating coexistence of these two species.  相似文献

The progeny of early-nesting Sparrowhawks Accipiter nisus have a higher survival rate than those of late nesters. To ascertain the reasons for greater survival in early-season Sparrowhawk fledglings, I studied post-fledging dispersal behaviour in this species by direct observations and radio-tracking during 3 years in Rockingham Forest, Northamptonshire, U.K.
Post-fledging brood-parasitism was found among early-dispersed young of both sexes.
Early-dispersed young spent up to 6 days being fed by the parents of other fledged, but still dependent, broods, as far as 6 km from their own nests.
Three broods were provided with supplementary food for 4 weeks, starting 1 week before expected dispersal. These young dispersed when significantly older than young from control broods. In both groups, males dispersed, on average, 3–4 days earlier than females. The ultimate dispersal age of young in control broods was negatively correlated with their rate of mass gain during the nestling period. Unlike the young of the control broods, fledglings in broods with augmented food were usually silent.
These findings offer an explanation for why Sparrowhawk young that disperse early in the season survive better than those which disperse late.  相似文献
