1. Plant–plant communication has been found to affect interactions between herbivores and plants in several model systems. In these systems, herbivore‐induced volatile chemical cues are emitted and perceived by other plants (receivers), which subsequently change their defensive phenotypes. Most studies have focused on how the effects of volatile cues affect plant damage, whereas herbivore performance has rarely been examined. 2. In this study, it is shown that plant–plant communication between willows reduced the growth rate, feeding rate, and conversion efficiency of some individuals but not others of a generalist caterpillar, Orgyia vetusta. 3. Using a paired, no‐choice trial design, there was substantial variation between caterpillar individuals in their response to willows that had been induced with a volatile plant–plant cue. This variation was explained by feeding parameters of the individual herbivores. Individuals behaved similarly when fed induced and non‐induced willow leaves. Specifically, growth rates of caterpillars that grew rapidly on non‐induced willow leaves were negatively affected by plant–plant cues, but growth rates of caterpillars that grew slowly on non‐induced willow leaves were not affected by the responses to volatiles from neighbouring willows. 4. Induction by volatile plant–plant cues reduced the growth rates of those individual herbivores that caused the greatest damage to willow, but had little effect on weak growers. 相似文献

1. Plants from different populations often display a variation in herbivore resistance. However, it is rarely understood what plant traits mediate such differences. 2. It was tested how leaf phenology affects herbivore populations in a 15‐year‐old common garden of valley oaks (Quercus lobata Née) with different populations and maternal parents from throughout the Q. lobata range. 3. The abundance of leaf miners (Stigmella sp. Shrank) and leaf phenology of oaks in the common garden was measured. 4. Leaf miner abundance varied among provenance locations (population), but not among maternal parents within populations. Leaf phenology varied by provenance location and maternal parent, and trees that leafed out earlier accrued higher leaf‐miner abundance. Path analysis indicated that leaf phenology was the likely driver of provenance and parental differences in resistance to leaf miners. 5. Understanding population differences is particularly important when considering transport of genotypes for ornamental or restoration purposes. The present study suggests that similarity in leaf phenology may be one factor that could be used to find genotypes with a similar herbivore resistance to local genotypes. 相似文献

Abstract .Unilaterally antennectomized Heliothis virescens (F.) males flying close to the central axis of a plume of sex pheromone display no significant differences in behaviour compared to sham-operated males in course angles, track angles, airspeed and groundspeed. This demonstrates that right/left antennal information is not necessary for normal orientation movements in response to pheromone, but rather that it is 'blended' within the moth's central nervous system before pheromone-mediated manoeuvres are made. However, some unilaterally antennectomized moths (36%) make repetitive, asymmetrical, saw-tooth-shaped tracks during pheromone-mediated upwind progress, whereas control moths never make such tracks. Unilaterally antennectomized moths made such tracks on the side of the plume contralateral to the missing antenna. We hypothesize that these occasional asymmetrical tracks in unilaterally ablated males are the result of reiterative asymmetrical pheromone stimulation of a higher probability on track legs going toward rather than away from the long axis of the plume on males with a single antenna remaining on the 'away from axis' side. Combined with a greater propensity for treated moths to lock onto the plume away from the central axis on one side rather than the other, repetitive successive asymmetrical track legs (resulting in a saw-tooth-shaped track) are commonly observed in these moths. Response of female Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae) to an oviposition attractant and/or stimulant associated with conspecific eggs was investigated in the laboratory. Females of two populations laid significantly higher mean number of eggs on sites with 160 eggs already present than on bare control sites. This response was lost when eggs placed on test sites were previously washed in organic solvents and distilled water. Age of eggs placed on test sites, 1-6 days after being laid, did not seem to affect the oviposition response of the females. Comparing effects of different numbers of eggs, positive responses were obtained when 80, 160 or 320 eggs were placed on test sites. No significant differences between mean egg numbers laid on test sites and controls were detected when batches of only 20 or 40 eggs were used. 相似文献

The prolonged periods of continuous darkness and light in polarregions have resulted in a unique seasonal partitioning of primaryand heterotrophic production. In McMurdo Sound for example,the biomass, size distribution and production by phytoplanktonand bacterioplankton undergo distinct seasonal cycles. The seasonalpattern of primary production appeared to be regulated by lightwhereas the three order of magnitude change in phytoplanktonbiomass during mid- to late December was largely controlledby the advection of planktonic algae from the Ross Sea intoMcMurdo Sound. The size distribution of phytoplankton was highlyseasonal; nano- and picoplankton were dominant from August throughNovember while netplankton were more abundant in December andJanuary. Seasonal variations of bacterial biomass and productionwere smaller than those of phytoplankton. During the late australwinter and spring, bacterial biomass and production exceededthose of phytoplankton. This implies that during this period,organic material from allochthonous sources sustained bacterialgrowth. During the late spring and summer, however, the patternwas reversed and autochthonous primary production was sufficientto support concurrent bacterioplankton production. The apparenttemporal disequilibrium in autochthonous bacterioplankton andphytoplankton production was maintained by the seasonal inputof allochthonous organic material into McMurdo Sound. The factsthat a) bacteria were both abundant and highly active, b) bacterivorywas common among many of the endemic protozoa and some planktonicmetazoa and c) these bacterivores consumed >95% of the bacterialproduction strongly suggest that bacteria are a crucial componentin the transfer of energy and material to metazoans in polarregions. 相似文献

Cold shock and heat shock: a comparison of the protection generated by brief pretreatment at less severe temperatures 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract Brief exposure to low (0o C) or high (40o C) temperature elicits a protective response that prevents injury when the flesh fly, Sarcophaga crassipalpis Macquart, is subjected to more severe cold (-10o C) or heat (45o C). Both the low and high temperature responses were found in all developmental stages of the fly, but were most pronounced in the pupal and pharate adult stages. The protective responses generated by brief exposure to 0 or 40o C appear similar in that both result in a rapid acquisition of cold or heat tolerance and a loss of protection after the flies are returned to 25o C. The protection generated by chilling is obvious within 10 min of exposure to 0o C while a 30 min exposure to 40o C is required to induce the high temperature protection. High temperature protects against cold shock injury within a narrow range (around 36o C) but we have no evidence that low temperature can protect against heat injury. We previously demonstrated that the rapid increase in cold tolerance correlates with concomitant increases in glycerol concentration, but in this study we found no significant elevation in glycerol in heat-shocked flies. Thus the physiological and biochemical bases for the rapid responses to cold and heat appear to be different. 相似文献

Epiphytic diatoms in two freshwater maritime Antarctic lakes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY.
- 1 An ecological study of two small maritime Antarctic lakes on Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, was undertaken from January 1986 to March 1987. Analysis of diatom counts from the lakes provided examples of oligotrophic and mesotrophic ecosystems.
- 2 A diverse community of 104 epiphytic taxa was identified. Twenty-eight taxa had a percentage abundance greater than 1% in both lakes. Distinctive dominant taxa were identified from each lake.
- 3 A variety of ordination techniques was performed on the abundance data and a principal components analysis demonstrated differences in the diatom assemblages between the two lakes. Clear separations of sites and species were evident between the lakes, and accounted for the greatest percentage variance.
- 4 Species composition varied with depth within each lake and was also important in influencing changes in assemblage composition between sites.
- 5 A redundancy analysis indicated that species composition was correlated to concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus but the total variance accounted for by the four physical and chemical factors measured was low (24%).

Dietary riboflavin deficiency is known to diminish malarial parasitemia. In this study, we determined whether imipramine and amitriptyline, drugs which inhibit riboflavin metabolism, have antimalarial efficacy. In addition, we evaluated whether these drugs, like other antimalarial agents, increase the hemolytic response to ferriprotoporphyrin IX (FP). The growth of Plasmodium falciparum (FCR3) in the absence and presence of these drugs (10 to 75 μM) was measured by determining (3H)hypoxanthine uptake by intraerythrocytic parasites for 48 h in RPMI 1640 medium. The uptake of (3H)hypoxanthine was significantly reduced in a dose-dependent manner by both imipramine and amitriptyline. The IC50 values of imipramine and amitriptyline at 48 h were 56 and 45 μM, respectively. Both drugs enhanced hemolysis induced by FP (10 or 20 μM). No hemolysis by these drugs was detected in the absence of FP. It is concluded that the tricyclic antidepressants, imipramine and amitriptyline, possess substantial antimalarial properties. 相似文献

Regardless of their tissue of origin, multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are commonly expanded in vitro for several population doublings to achieve a sufficient number of cells for therapy. Prolonged MSC expansion has been shown to result in phenotypical, morphological and gene expression changes in MSCs, which ultimately lead to the state of senescence. The presence of senescent cells in therapeutic MSC batches is undesirable because it reduces their viability, differentiation potential and trophic capabilities. Additionally, senescent cells acquire senescence-activated secretory phenotype, which may not only induce apoptosis in the neighboring host cells following MSC transplantation, but also trigger local inflammatory reactions. This review outlines the current and promising new methodologies for the identification of senescent cells in MSC cultures, with a particular emphasis on non-destructive and label-free methodologies. Technologies allowing identification of individual senescent cells, based on new surface markers, offer potential advantage for targeted senescent cell removal using new-generation senolytic agents, and subsequent production of therapeutic MSC batches fully devoid of senescent cells. Methods or a combination of methods that are non-destructive and label-free, for example, involving cell size and spectroscopic measurements, could be the best way forward because they do not modify the cells of interest, thus maximizing the final output of therapeutic-grade MSC cultures. The further incorporation of machine learning methods has also recently shown promise in facilitating, automating and enhancing the analysis of these measured data. 相似文献
