BOSCH, J., 1992. Floral biology and pollinators of three co-occurring Cistus species (Cistaceae). The pollination of three species of Cistus, Cistus albidus L., Cistus salvifolius L. and Cistus monspeliensis L. is studied. Insect visitors were censused and some were captured to analyse pollen distribution on their bodies. Floral phenology, breeding systems, some aspects of floral biology (pollen and nectar production, pollen-ovule ratios) and floral morphology were also studied for each species. Flowers of C. albidus produce more pollen and nectar than the other two species studied, and attract more insects, especially those with higher nutritional requirements. All three species are highly self-incompatible, but C. salvifolius and C. monspeliensis show some features that hinder xenogamy, and they have lower pollen-ovule ratios than C. albidus. As a result, this latter species apparently receives higher levels of cross-pollination, but at the cost of a higher investment to attract and reward reliable pollinators.  相似文献

Allozyme diversity was evaluated in four closely-related taxa of the Delphinium series Fissa distributed throughout the Western Mediterranean area. All are considered threatened plants. Delphinium bolosii and Delphinium mansanetianum are narrowly endemic to the Eastern Iberian Peninsula, whereas Delphinium fissum ssp. sordidum is found in a few populations across the Peninsula. Delphinium fissum ssp. fissum is more widely distributed but often in small and isolated populations. In this group, Delphinium bolosii is dysploid (2 n  = 18) whereas the other taxa are diploid (2 n  = 16). A total of 12 populations were surveyed, including all known locations for D. bolosii , D. mansanetianum , and D. fissum ssp. sordidum . Eleven enzyme systems were assayed and 15 loci were resolved. Markedly depauperate values for genetic diversity were obtained for D. mansanetianum ( H e = 0.013) and D. fissum ssp. sordidum ( H e = 0.044). The estimates for D. fissum ssp. fissum ( H e = 0.071) were below the values expected for widespread species. Small population size and marginal distribution have probably contributed to the low variability observed in this group. By contrast, D. bolosii exhibited comparatively larger populations and greater genetic diversity ( H e = 0.138). The habitat selection and breeding performance of Yellow-legged Gulls Larus cachinnans were studied in the Medes Islands colony, northeastern Spain, during 1995 and 1996. Of the three main habitats on the islands (shrubs, grass and bare areas), gulls first occupied those with the highest percentage of tall vegetation. Gulls tended to select nest sites with 20–75% cover despite great differences in the cover in the habitats and territories, suggesting that the presence of a suitable nest site may play a major role in the choice of breeding habitat. Nest-site tenacity did not influence the preferences of gulls at any level since the same pattern of choice was observed in an area subjected to annual culls (i.e. where most of the breeding pairs were culled annually and replaced by naive birds). In spite of great differences in the physical characteristics of the habitats, little difference was found in breeding performance of the gulls between habitats. Gulls nesting in the least preferred habitat (i.e. mainly bare) had smaller clutches than those nesting in the other two habitats, possibly as a result of their later seasonal laying. Despite the similar breeding success in different habitats, gulls did not seem to distribute according to the ideal free model reported for Herring Gulls Larus argentatus since the density in the preferred habitat (i.e. shrubs) was never higher than in the other two. We suggest that the habitat selection by Yellow-legged Gulls within the colony could follow an ideal despotic distribution.  相似文献

The establishment of a two month commercial fishing moratorium, which overlapped each year with different stages of the breeding cycle of the Yellow-legged Gull Larus cachinnans at the Ebro Delta, Spain, provided the opportunity of testing the effects of food limitation on the breeding success of this species. The study was carried out in 1993, when the chick rearing stage occurred with normal commercial fishing activity and in 1994, when the chick rearing stage overlapped with the trawling moratorium. We recorded diet of the chicks, breeding phenology, clutch size, egg volume, hatching success and productivity of adult birds. There was a highly significant difference in the diet of the chicks between the two years and significantly lower productivity in 1994, whilst the other parameters examined did not change. These results show that a dependence on discards from commercial fishing activities may be a limiting factor in the breeding success of this seabird.  相似文献

1. Diapause is a dynamic process of low metabolic activity that allows insects to survive periods of harsh conditions. Notwithstanding the lowered metabolism, and because diapausing insects have no access to food, diapause has an energetic cost that may affect post‐diapause performance. 2. Previous studies on the solitary bee Osmia lignaria have shown that prolonged pre‐wintering periods (the time during which individuals already in diapause remain at warm temperatures) are associated with elevated lipid consumption, fat body depletion, and body weight loss. The present study investigated whether prolonged pre‐wintering also affects reproduction, i.e. whether the costs associated with diapause could have an effect on post‐diapause performance in this species. 3. Females were exposed to a range of pre‐wintering conditions, and ovary development and individual post‐wintering performance were monitored throughout their adult life span. 4. No evidence of an effect of pre‐wintering duration on post‐diapause reproductive success was found. Expected differences in the timing of establishment were not observed because ovary maturation was, surprisingly, not arrested during pre‐wintering. Prolonged pre‐wintering duration did not result in decreased life span, probably because emerging females could rapidly replenish their metabolic reserves through feeding. However, there was a very strong effect of the duration of the pre‐emergence period on the likelihood of nest establishment. 5. Longevity, the main factor determining fecundity in Osmia, is subjected to high levels of intrinsic variability, even among females of similar size exposed to identical conditions during development and nesting.  相似文献

Allozyme electrophoresis was conducted to survey the levels and distribution of genetic diversity in the tetraploid perennial larkspur Delphinium montanum (Ranunculaceae), which is endemic to the eastern Pyrenees of Spain and France and considered to be endangered. Seven populations were sampled, resolving 14 putative enzymatic loci belonging to eight enzymes. Banding patterns stained in gels revealed several enzymatic duplications attributable to autotetraploidy, such as the presence of both balanced and unbalanced heterozygotes and the lack of fixed heterozygosity. However, variability in D. montanum ( P  = 23.8%, A  = 1.48, and H e = 0.082) was lower than that expected for an autotetraploid species. This, in addition to the scarcity of loci showing three or four different alleles, could indicate that this species has suffered genetic erosion through population bottlenecks, or, alternatively, that it is undergoing diploidization.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 155 , 211–222.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The maximum homing ability of female bees, that is, their capacity to return to the nest after being displaced a certain distance, is considered to be an estimate of their maximum foraging distance. 2. The present study provides data on homing ability and body weight for Osmia lignaria and combines them with data for five other congenerics, O. rufa, O. cornuta, O. pedicornis, O. cornifrons, and O. emarginata for analysis. These species are important pollinators of spring‐flowering plants, and some have been developed as commercial crop pollinators. 3. It is shown that homing ability is positively and linearly related to body weight (r2 = 0.81; P = 0.01). 4. These results should be of use in selecting Osmia species as potential crop pollinators and establishing adequate buffer distances around genetically modified crops.  相似文献

Work on the life histories of common antarctic benthic marineinvertebrates over the past several decades demands a revisionof several widely held paradigms. First, contrary to expectationsderived from work on temperate species, there is little or noevidence for temperature adaptation with respect to reproduction(gametogenesis), development, and growth. It remains to be determinedwhether the slow rates of these processes reflect some inherentinability to adapt to low temperatures, or are a response tofeatures of the antarctic marine environment not directly relatedto low temperature, such as low food resources. Secondly, contraryto the widely accepted opinion designated as "Thorson's rule,"pelagic development is common in many groups of shallow-watermarine invertebrates. In fact in some groups, such as asteroids,pelagicdevelopment is as prevalent in McMurdo Sound, the southern-mostopen-water marine environment in the world, as in central California.In other taxonomic groups, especially gastropods, there doesseem to be a genuine trend toward non-pelagic development fromtropical to antarctic latitudes. Although this trend has beenpredicted by theoretical models, its underlying causes appearto be group specific rather than general. Thirdly, pelagic lecithotrophicdevelopment, often considered to be of negligible importance,occurs in many shallow-water antarctic marine macroinvertebrates.Pelagic lecithotrophy may be an adaptation to a combinationof poor food conditions in antarctic waters most of the yearand slow rates of development. Nevertheless, some of the mostabundant and widespread antarctic marine invertebrates havepelagic planktotrophic larvae that take very long times to completedevelopment to metamorphosis. These species areparticularlyprevalent in productive regions of shallow water (<30 m),which are frequently disturbed by anchor ice formation, andthe production of numerous pelagic planktotrophic larvaemayrepresent a strategy for colonization. Although planktotrophiclarvae tend to be seasonal in occurrence, their production isnot linked particularly closely to the mid-summer pulse of phytoplanktonproduction. These larvae show no evidence of starvation, evenduring times when phytoplankton abundance is very low, and theymay depend on unusual sources of food, such as bacteria. Howthey escape the selective conditions that apparently led toa predominance of non-feeding modes of development in antarcticmarine invertebrates remains as a major challenge for antarcticmarine biology.  相似文献
