The presence of very high concentrations of organic pollutants, phenols, tannins and heavy metals mainly chromium in wastewater discharged from leather industries, tags it as one of the most polluting industries. The phenolic syntans discharged from tanning units have an adverse effect on living organisms and cause serious environmental pollution, thereby making it very imperative to remove it. Among various treatment methods available for removal of phenols, biodegradation is environment friendly. The present study aims at the remediation of phenolic syntan used in the leather industry employing individual as well as co-culture of Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at varying syntan concentration in the medium. Parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), total phenol content (TPC) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) indicating biodegradation were analyzed. Promising results were observed with P. aeruginosa, which exhibited a reduction in TPC by 62–72% in all the concentrations of syntan tested just within 12 h of inoculation, whereas about 67 and 83% reduction in COD and TOC respectively was observed for 2000 ppm concentration at the end of 5 days. B. cereus also demonstrated very good reduction in the above parameters however; percentage was less as compared to P. aeruginosa. In the case of co-culture, the TPC reduction was higher than B. cereus but lesser than P. aeruginosa. The percentage reduction in TOC and COD was highest for 500 ppm which eventually decreased for subsequent concentrations.
Not only Swedish studies, but also several international studies, claim an increase in anti-Semitic attitudes in recent decades. As prejudice is acquired in the early years of socialization, and/or is innate and fairly stable over the life cycle, examining adolescents’ attitudes is vitally important. Hence, by controlling for individual demographic and socio-economic background factors, we study two interrelated questions: Has anti-Semitism among Swedish secondary school-age youths changed between 2003 and 2009? Are changes equal across groups, with a specific focus on religious groups? Using two unique cross-section surveys of secondary school-age students in Sweden for the years 2003 and 2009, we try to address the above questions. Our analysis shows, in contrast to the views of the general public and other related studies, that anti-Semitism has decreased slightly during the examined period. Moreover, the study finds a variation in anti-Semitism by religious affiliation: it has increased among Muslim youth, but remains stable in other groups. 相似文献
Contributing to a student organization, such as the International Society for Computational Biology Student Council (ISCB-SC) and its Regional Student Group (RSG) program, takes time and energy. Both are scarce commodities, especially when you are trying to find your place in the world of computational biology as a graduate student. It comes as no surprise that organizing ISCB-SC-related activities sometimes interferes with day-to-day research and shakes up your priority list. However, we unanimously agree that the rewards, both in the short as well as the long term, make the time spent on these extracurricular activities more than worth it. Intake rate, the rate in which herbivores can process their food, is presumed to be an important factor in habitat selection down to the scale of the foraging patch. Much attention has been given to the selection of swards of high nutritional quality, but much less has been given to the influences of sward structure on patch selection in small herbivores. In this study we tested the effects of sward density and height on the functional foraging response of barnacle geese, Branta leucopsis. The functional response curve for herbivores describes how intake rate is affected by food availability. We conducted feeding trials to determine intake rate and bite size of barnacle geese on experimentally manipulated swards. Results indicate that intake rate is mainly dependent on sward height and that there is a strong correlation between bite size and intake rate. Sward density does not influence the rate of food consumption; it is, however, a crucial parameter affecting potential total yield. We conclude that bite size is the crucial parameter influencing intake rate. Bite size is explained both by sward height and individual differences in bill morphology. Furthermore, intake rate seems to be dependent on the physical structure of the grass species consumed. 相似文献
