Myocardial hypertrophy accompanies systemic hypertension and aortic stenosis, i.e., pressure overload. In man cardiac failure only appears after years of pressure overload, during which time cardiac function had been maintained. The structural correlates of cardiac failure have been a subject of much interest for many years. Several hypotheses relating alterations in muscle fiber alignment, capillary density, or collagen content have been offered. The application of morphometric techniques has provided essential quantitative information on the structural components of the normal and diseased heart. These data indicate that muscle fiber alignment remains normal in the pressure overloaded heart despite the presence of hypertrophy or the appearance of clinical failure. On the other hand, capillary density is decreased and collagen content is increased in hypertrophied hearts. Chemical studies on collagen concentration however have yielded inconsistent results. The relative contribution of the microcirculation and collagenous structure of the myocardium on its respective O2 availability, mechanical behavior, and deterioration in pump function will require further investigation. 相似文献

Abstract Utilizing a new method for modeling furanose pseudorotation (D. A Pearlman and S.-H. Kim, J. Biomol. Struct. Dyn. 3, 85 (1985)) and the empirical multiple correlations between nucleic acid torsion angles we derived in the previous report (D. A Pearlman and S.-H. Kim, previous paper in this issue), we have made an energetic examination of the entire conformational spaces available to two nucleic acid oligonucleotides: d(ApApApA) and ApApApA The energies are calculated using a semi-empirical potential function. From the resulting body of data, energy contour map pairs (one for the DNA molecule, one for the RNA structure) have been created for each of the 21 possible torsion angle pairs in a nucleotide repeating unit. Of the 21 pairs, 15 have not been reported previously. The contour plots are different from those made earlier in that for each point in a particular angle-angle plot, the remaining five variable torsion angles are rotated to the values which give a minimum energy at this point. The contour maps are overall quite consistent with the experimental distribution of oligonucleotide data. A number of these maps are of particular interest: δ (C5′-C4′-C3′-03′)χ (04′-C1′-N9- C4), where the energetic basis for an approximately linear δ-χ correlation can be seen; ζ (C3′- 03′-P-05′)-δ, in which the experimentally observed linear correlation between ζ and δ in DNA (220° < ζ <280°) is clearly predicted; ζ-ε (C4′-C3′-03′-P), which shows that e increases with decreasing ζ <260°; α (03′-P-05′-C5′)-γ (05′-C5′-C4′-C3′) where a clear linear correlation between these angles is also apparent, consistent with experiment; and several others. For the DNA molecule studied here, the sugar torsion Ô is predicted to be the most flexible, while for the RNA molecule, the greatest amount of flexibility is expected to reside in a and y. Both the DNA and RNA molecules are predicted to be highly polymorphic. Complete energy minimization has been performed on each of the minima found in the energy searches and the results further support this prediction. Possible pathways for B-form to A-form DNA interconversion suggested by the results of this study are discussed. The results of these calculations support use of the new sugar modeling technique and torsion angle correlations in future conformational studies of nucleic acids. 相似文献

Abstract— A cladogram of green plants involving all major extant groups of green algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, and seed plants is presented. It is partly based on contributions by B. Mishler and S. Churchill, H. Wagner, and P. Crane. The relationships of green plants to other green organisms ( Prochloron , euglenophytes) are discussed. The characters and subclades of the cladogram are briefly discussed, with an attempt to indicate weak points. The possibility of including some major extinct groups is considered. A cladistic classification consistent with the cladogram is presented. Grades are abandoned as taxa and major clades like the division Chlorophyta (green algae excluding micro-monadophytes and charophytes sensu Mattox and Stewart), the division Streptophyta (charophytes + embryophytes), the subdivision Embryophytina (land plants or embryophytes), the superclass Tracheidatae (tracheophytes), and the class Spermatopsida (seed plants) are recognized. 相似文献

Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) is a member of a family of conserved chaperone proteins whose function is well investigated in many model organisms. Here we focus on an Hsp70 called Ssa5 in the ciliate protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila, and reveal that its translation is heat inducible as for general Hsps. Moreover, the protein is abundantly expressed in the cytoplasm during sexual reproduction (conjugation) as well as in response to heat‐stress. Knocking out of SSA5 (ΔSSA5) does not affect the survival of the cell under heat‐stress, likely due to other Hsp70 paralogs compensating for the defect. During conjugation, ΔSSA5 leads to a fertilization defect in which the two pronuclei are in close proximity but never fuse. The unfertilized pronuclei differentiate, resulting in a heterokaryon with developed haploid germline and somatic nuclei. In addition, degeneration of the parental somatic nucleus is not affected. These results suggest a specific involvement of Ssa5 in pronuclear fusion and fertilization. 相似文献

ABSTRACT In Quebec, Canada, harvest of bobcats (Lynx rufus) started to decline in 1985 and by 1991, harvest seasons were closed due to concerns of a perceived population decline. Since the closing of harvest season in 1991, the average temperature has increased, snow quantity has decreased, and important changes in agriculture and forest management have occurred. In light of changing conditions, the situation of Quebec bobcats needed reassessment. Thus, we analyzed harvest data to clarify the current status of bobcat populations in Quebec. From 1980 to 1991, bobcat harvest in Quebec was strongly correlated with bobcat harvest in Maine (USA), Nova Scotia (Canada), Ontario (Canada), and Vermont (USA). Extrapolations of harvest in Quebec relative to harvest in Maine, Ontario, Vermont, and Nova Scotia suggested an increase in number of bobcats after 1991. Mass of male and female bobcats before 1991 was less than mass of animals captured after 1991. Percentage of juveniles in the reported harvest before 1991 was higher than after 1991. However, percentage of males and litter sizes in the harvest did not differ before and after 1991. The geographic distribution of bobcats captured has gradually expanded after the closure of the harvest season. Our findings suggest that bobcat populations in Quebec have recovered from the 1985–1991 decline, and that the harvest season for this species could resume. This study also illustrates how managers can rely on data from neighboring jurisdiction to manage species when local harvest data is unavailable. 相似文献
