Effect of interferon on the course of experimental E coli-induced pyelonephritis

The effect of the type I interferon on the development and process of experimental pyelonephritis caused by E. coli was studied on mice weighing 12 to 14 g. Interferon was administered intraperitoneally in a dose of 1000 units on days 3 and 7 of the disease. It was shown that the administration of the type I interferon to the mice with experimental pyelonephritis promoted rapid elimination of bacteria from the kidneys, prevented their penetration to the contralateral (intact) kidney, prevented marked macro- and microscopic damages in the kidneys, lowered the intensity of the inflammatory reaction, and increased the phagocytic activity of neutrophils and the number of the E-rosette-forming lymphocytes in the thymus. The data provided experimental grounding for clinical trials of interferon preparations in treatment of bacterial pyelonephritis.     

The effect of salvin on the growth and ultrastructure of Staphylococcus aureus 209P

Antibiotic salvin obtained from Salvia officinalis has been studied for its effect on the growth and ultrastructure of Staphylococcus aureus 209P. The antibiotic in the sub-bacteriostatic concentration considerably elongates the lag-phase (up to 11-12 h) exerting no significant effect on the growth rate of the staphylococcus population as well as it prolongs duration of the exponential phase. The analysis of electronograms of staphylococcus cells subjected to the action of salvin in the concentrations similar to the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), has revealed the cell thinning, inhibition and destruction of the division. The introduction of 5MIC antibiotic into the exponentially grown culture made a cell wall considerably thinner, destructing its external layer; the number of lyzed cells sharply increased. The appearance of bodies not described previously with a membrane envelope and ribosomes as well as of mesosomal structures was observed.     

Phylogeographic structure in the chromosomally polymorphic rodent Cricetulus barabensis sensu lato (Mammalia,Cricetidae)

Striped hamsters (Cricetulus barabensis sensu lato) represent a complex of chromosomally distinct allopatric lineages/taxa of either species or subspecies rank. They are widely distributed across the steppes of eastern and central Palearctic. Phylogenetic analysis of cytochrome b gene sequences based on 496 specimens from 112 localities revealed five well‐supported lineages divergent at 2%–4%. Two of them correspond to “griseus” (2n = 22) and “pseudogriseus” (2n = 24) karyomorphs and are placed as sister taxa. The “barabensis” (2n = 20) karyomorph is represented by three other branches and appears non‐monophyletic. All mtDNA lineages are distributed allopatrically or parapatrically; no indications of gene flow between populations of different chromosomal races were found. The results of the molecular clock analysis suggest that the main lineages diverged in the late Middle Pleistocene. The inferred evolutionary scenario implies that the common ancestor of the recent lineages belonged to the 2n = 20 karyomorph and originated in the eastern part of the contemporary range.     

Development of rat embryos after prolonged irradiation of ovocytes at the stage of immature follicles

It was shown that the prolonged low-dose irradiation (up to 0.6 Gy) of the immature ovocytes of young rats (21-28 days old) caused delay of development of preimplantation embryos after fertilization of ovicells.     

Biomimetic oxidation of benzene by a polynuclear manganese complex [Mn12O12(CH3CO2)16(H2O)4] under mild conditions

The possibility of monooxygenase enzymes biomimetic construction models with the use of polynuclear manganese complexes was shown. It was demonstration that benzene is oxidized by polynuclear manganese complex [Mn12O12(CH3CO2)16(H2O)4] in acetonitrile solution at room temperature and atmospheric pressure yielding phenol with the selectivity more than 80%. It was determined that the addition of air oxygen as the reoxidizer to the reaction mixture didn't transfer the reaction into the catalytic mode.     

Spatial organization of colonies of dimorphic micromycetes

The peculiarities of the formation of colonies of dimorphous epilithic fungus Phaeococcomyces de Hoog isolated from marble were studied. The data obtained can be used for modeling the formation of colonies of dimorphous microscopic fungi.     

Genetic diversity, origin, and geographic distribution tendencies of biotypes of polyploid spined loaches (Cypriniformes, Cobitidae, Cobitis) in Ukraine

Sixteen of 28 possible biotypes of C. elongatoides-taenia s.lato (C. taenia, C. tanaitica, C. species-1) have been found in Ukrainian waters. Presumably, the biotypes of C. aff. melanoleuca-tanaitica has also been identified. The share of polyploids among Cobitis on average was 65%, where males made up less than 1% with the same ratio among tri- and tetra-polyploids. The absence of amphydiploidy and presence of individuals with recombinant genotype and abnormal electrophoretic specters, whose frequency sometimes is considerable, are attracting increasing interest. There are two centers of polyploid biotypes creation: southern (the Lower Danube) and northern (the Upper Danube, Oder, and Rhine). The C. taenia and C. species-1 type, which is typical for the northwestern basins of Ukraine, participates in the formation of polyploids in the Rhine alongside with C. elongatoides and C. tanaitica. It is determined that biotypes (C. 2(3) elongatoidestanaitica, C. elongatoides-2(3) tanaitica) in comparison with biotypes whose genome includes the chromosome set of C. taenia are limited in distribution towards the East. This is due to the hybridization of females from these biotypes with males of C. taenia afflicted by genetic instability and reduced viability of posterity.
