Eight specimens of Devonian stromatoporoids with well visible latilaminae arrangement exposed on polished slabs were subjected to a detailed morphometric analysis. The studies have revealed that the so far used stromatoporoid parameterization method leaves a broad field of uncertainty concerning the exact definitions of particular parameters. The possible ways of making the measurements and the propositions of more precise definitions of the parameters used in the method, both of the growth form above the sea bottom and of the whole skeleton are therefore presented in this paper. The Bm - basal length of the skeleton, has been defined as a straight line joining the two ends of the basal surface, which have been pointed basing on the stromatoporoid's overall shape, latilaminae arrangement and angular relation to the main growth axis position in ontogenetical development, length. The Bn - basal length of the growth form above the sea bottom, is to be measured along a straight line joining the ends of the last visible latilamina. From among a number of possible definitions of the Vm - vertical height of the whole skeleton, a straight line joining the initial growth nucleus and the highest point on the specimen's surface above the Bm line has been selected. The Vn - vertical height of the growth form above the sea bottom is defined as the height of the point on the stromatoporoid surface highest above the Bn measured perpendicularly to it. A parameter of burial ratio, BR=(Vm-Vn)/Vm, is introduced.  相似文献

Selective predation of Esox lucius on Gasterosteus aculeatus in a natural assemblage of fish of a stream in Central Poland is described and analysed. The number of lateral plates, the standard length and four size-dependent traits were significantly smaller for sticklebacks from stomach samples than for those from population samples. Thc remaining three metric traits were not significantly different among the samples. The regressions of five metric features (out of seven) on the standard length were significantly different between the sample of caten sticklebacks and that from the free-living population. This supports the supposition that the selectivity of pikc predation with respect to metric traits is not attributable to selection on body size of the prey. Thus, it is reasonable to claim that the sample of caten sticklebacks is selectively taken from the natural population. It justifies the selective predation assumption of some hypotheses of the causes of the pattern of geographic variation in the three-spined stickleback.  相似文献

1. Yponomeuta evonymellus is a monophagous moth that feeds on Prunus padus which is native to Europe. In recent years, larval feeding and egg clusters have also been observed on non‐native Prunus serotina plants; however, survival of larvae on this new host is very low. 2. The objective of the present study was to determine how the feeding of larvae on each of the two host plants impacts oviposition, offspring survival and fecundity in Y. evonymellus. Our hypothesis was that, under controlled conditions, females will lay eggs on the host on which they fed as larvae. We also hypothesised that the lower survival of young larvae feeding on P. serotina was due to the smaller buds and leaves present in this species, relative to those of P. padus. 3. A dual‐choice experiment conducted under laboratory conditions demonstrated that females preferentially chose to oviposit on the plant species on which they fed as larvae. In the experiment, potential fecundity and offspring survival were significantly higher on P. padus than on P. serotina. The reduced performance of Y. evonymellus on P. serotina was correlated with a smaller bud mass and volume, lower leaf mass and surface area, and difficulty in constructing a protective tent against unfavourable weather conditions. 4. In summary, the identity of the host plant species during larval feeding determines adult oviposition preference for that host species. The survival of larvae on P. serotina growing in the nature is low, but for phenology‐related reasons.  相似文献

1. Full sunlight conditions in open clear‐cuts may limit the activity of ants as soil surface temperatures reach lethal levels. Therefore, differences may be expected between the diurnal and nocturnal activity of ants, and in the interactions between ant species. These predictions, however, have been poorly investigated so far. 2. The circadian activity of ants in clear‐cuts in managed forests in Poland was investigated. Repeated counts of ants were performed during the day and the following night at the clear‐cut edge and in the clear‐cut interior. Interspecific interactions and the effect of plant coverage were also considered. 3. Abundances of Formica fusca Linnaeus and red wood ants were higher during the day, whereas Myrmica were more common at night. Formica fusca, Lasius and red wood ants were more common at the clear‐cut edge than in the interior. Myrmica showed the opposite pattern, but at night, its numbers increased at the edge. Plant coverage positively affected F. fusca and red wood ants. 4. Red wood ants tended to be negatively associated with Lasius, whereas they were neutral for F. fusca. The negative association of red wood ants and Myrmica was stronger during the day compared to night. 5. The time of day was a strong driver of ant activity in the clear‐cuts, whereas the distribution of red wood ants was of lesser importance. It is concluded that circadian activity may substantially contribute to niche separation between coexisting species, therefore, studies performed exclusively during the day cannot reflect the real structure of the community.  相似文献

The physiological condition of nestling altricial birds depends on the quantity and quality of food delivered to them by parents. One indicator of the condition of Great Tit Parus major nestlings is the haemoglobin concentration in their blood. The present study demonstrates the influence of weather conditions (temperature and rainfall) on nestling haemoglobin concentrations during two consecutive breeding seasons in two different habitat types (parkland vs. woodland) in the city of Łódź in Central Poland. This influence probably results from the effects of weather on the trophic base of the Tits. Dry, hot weather strongly affected bush and herbal foliage later in the breeding season (mid-June to mid-July) in 2006, presumably by interfering with the development of herbivorous arthropod populations. This in turn caused food shortages for second broods of Great Tits, which resulted in nestlings having low haemoglobin levels. In the following year, temperature was on average lower, and rainfall was regular but not very heavy. These conditions enabled the development of arthropod assemblages, and the trophic base for birds was much richer. Haemoglobin concentrations in the blood of nestlings from second broods were significantly higher than those of first broods and, unexpectedly, second-brood nestlings in 2007 were on average in better physiological state than first-brood nestlings in 2006 in both habitats. The relationship between haemoglobin concentration, brood category and year was very similar to that for nestling body mass. However, it was independent of both body mass and brood size. In some years and under certain conditions, second broods can be more successful than first broods.  相似文献

In the discussion on early vascular land plants an important part is played by different organic microfossils. One category comprises tube-like objects of pre-Devonian age, called tracheid-like tubes. Recognition of the taxonomic affinity of these microfossils is very important because tracheids are one of the fundamental elements of the xylem and are treated as a hallmark of the vascular plants. Banks (1975) was of the opinion that the tubes previously described as tracheid-like were of animal rather than plant origin. He suggested also that tracheid-like tubes presumably originated from graptolites or chi-tinozoans. Gray & Boucot (1977:166), following personal communications of A. Urbanek, W. B. N. Berry and K. M. Towe, stated that there was little likelihood that the tubes of the graptolites and tracheid-like tubes 'could be confused or that our tracheid-like tubes could have originated from graptolites'. Gray & Boucot claimed that tracheid-like tubes had a plant source.  相似文献

1. The performance of ant colonies depends on different factors such as nest site, colony structure or the presence of pathogens and social parasites. Myrmica ants host various types of social parasites, including the larvae of Maculinea butterflies and Microdonmyrmicae (Schönrogge) hoverfly. How these social parasites affect host colony performance is still unexplored. 2. It was examined how the presence of Maculinea teleius Bergsträsser, Maculinea alcon (Denis & Schiffermüller), and M. myrmicae larvae, representing different feeding and growth strategies inside host colonies, is associated with worker survival, the number of foragers, and colony productivity parameters such as growth and reproduction. 3. It was found that the presence of social parasites is negatively associated with total colony production and the production of ant larvae and gynes. Male production was lower only in nests infested by M. teleius, whereas the number of worker pupae was significantly higher in all types of infested colonies than in uninfested colonies. Laboratory observations indicated that nests infested by Maculinea larvae are characterised by a higher number of foragers compared to uninfested nests but we did not find differences in worker survival among nest types. 4. The observed pattern of social parasite influence on colony productivity can be explained by the feeding strategies of parasitic larvae. The most negative effect was found for M. teleius, which feeds on the largest host brood and eliminates a high number of sexual forms. The strong, adverse influence of all studied parasite species on gyne production may result in low queen production in Myrmica populations exposed to these social parasites.  相似文献

1. Flood‐pulsed wetlands make vital contributions to local and global biodiversity. However, the patterns and controls of spatial and temporal variation in aquatic biodiversity in flood‐pulsed wetlands are not well understood. We analysed the relationship between variation in hydrological regime and the patterns of aquatic biodiversity in a large pristine flood‐pulsed wetland, the Okavango Delta, Botswana. 2. Surveys of water chemistry, diatoms and macroinvertebrates were conducted over the seasonal phases of the flood pulse. Hydrological variables of flood frequency and hydroperiod class were collated from 16 years of satellite images. Multivariate regression trees and generalised least squares regression were used to determine the chief controls of community composition and taxon richness. 3. Hydroperiod class, phase of the flood and conductivity explained 32% and 43% of the variation in diatom and invertebrate taxon richness, respectively. There was a negative relationship between hydroperiod class and invertebrate taxon richness on the rising, peak and receding flood, whereas at low flood there was no significant relationship. Multivariate regression tree analysis revealed hydroperiod class, phase of the flood and conductivity as the dominant forces shaping invertebrate and diatom community composition. 4. Seasonal and spatial variation in hydrological conditions are the principal drivers of variation in aquatic biodiversity in flood‐pulsed wetlands. In pristine flood‐pulsed wetlands, increased productivity caused by the arrival of the flood waters appears to override disturbance and connectivity in shaping taxon richness and community composition. Thus, these data suggest that the maintenance of a rich mosaic of habitats covering a broad range of hydroperiod is the key to preserving aquatic biodiversity and natural ecosystem function in flood‐pulsed wetlands.  相似文献
