Abstract. Four species of Trichomyiinae are recorded from the Palaearctic region and a key to them is provided. Trichomyia urbica Haliday, T.parvula Szabo and the genitalia of T.itocoae Tokunaga & Komyo are redescribed. T.malkkyi sp.n., from Greece, is described. Detailed information is given on the structure of the sclerotized parts of the abdomen and on the internal genitalia of some Palaearctic, Nearctic and South American Trichomyiinae. The monophyly of some species-groups is briefly discussed, but the interrelationships of these groups remain obscure.  相似文献

Calcium‐dependent protein kinases (CDPKs) have been shown to play important roles in plant environmental stress signal transduction. We report on the identification of ZmCPK1 as a member of the maize (Zea mays) CDPK gene family involved in the regulation of the maize cold stress response. Based upon in silico analysis of the Z. mays cv. B73 genome, we identified that the maize CDPK gene family consists of 39 members. Two CDPK members were selected whose gene expression was either increased (Zmcpk1) or decreased (Zmcpk25) in response to cold exposure. Biochemical analysis demonstrated that ZmCPK1 displays calcium‐independent protein kinase activity. The C‐terminal calcium‐binding domain of ZmCPK1 was sufficient to mediate calcium independency of a previously calcium‐dependent enzyme in chimeric ZmCPK25‐CPK1 proteins. Furthermore, co‐transfection of maize mesophyll protoplasts with active full‐length ZmCPK1 suppressed the expression of a cold‐induced marker gene, Zmerf3 (ZmCOI6.21). In accordance, heterologous overexpression of ZmCPK1 in Arabidopsis thaliana yielded plants with altered acclimation‐induced frost tolerance. Our results identify ZmCPK1 as a negative regulator of cold stress signalling in maize.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Predators, including insect parasitoids, often eavesdrop on prey signals, and as a result, predation can have important effects on the evolution of prey signalling behaviour.
2. The phonotactic parasitoid fly, Ormia ochracea , uses the calling songs of male field crickets to locate their field crickets hosts. In the western USA, this fly parasitises the variable field cricket, Gryllus lineaticeps . Previous work with one fly population suggested that female flies, like female field crickets, preferentially orient to male songs with higher chirp rates and longer chirp durations, although a limited range of male song types was used in this previous study. The current study, with a different fly population, used field-based, two-speaker choice tests to examine: (1) the effect of male chirp rate and chirp duration on fly attraction, using a natural range of song types; and (2) the relative importance of these song types in host selection by the flies.
3. Three lines of evidence suggested that chirp rate is more important than chirp duration in host selection. (a) The flies consistently preferred higher chirp rates but only sometimes preferred longer chirp durations. (b) The flies consistently preferred higher chirp rate/shorter chirp duration songs to lower chirp rate/longer chirp duration songs. (c) Preferences for longer chirp durations could be eliminated by increasing the amplitude of the less attractive song type, while preferences for higher chirp rates could only sometimes be eliminated by increasing the amplitude of the less attractive song type.
4. Fly predation may favour lower chirp rates and shorter chirp durations in G. lineaticeps , and may have resulted in stronger selection on chirp rate than on chirp duration.  相似文献

Shifts in climate regime have provoked substantial trophic‐ and species‐dependent changes within ecosystems. With growing concerns of present global warming, we examined potential lake ecosystem responses, natural hierarchy responses (i.e. immediate responses at lower system levels as opposed to delayed responses at higher system levels), and possible shifts among abiotic (physics, nutrients) and biotic (phytoplankton, zooplankton) system components. Specifically, we analyzed decadal data collected from Müggelsee, a lake in Berlin, Germany, for climate‐induced abiotic and biotic changes, their timing and type, and classified them as abrupt permanent, gradual permanent, abrupt temporary, or monotonic. We further categorized variable changes as a function of system hierarchy, including lake physics (ice, temperature, stratification), nutrients (phosphorus, nitrogen, silicate), plankton, and levels of integration (i.e. species, taxonomic groups, and total plankton). Contrary to current theory, data suggest abrupt responses did not occur in a hierarchy‐dependent manner, nor was a clear pattern observed among functional system‐based categories. Abrupt permanent changes were the most prominent response pattern observed, suggesting they may be driven by large‐scale climatic oscillations and by surpassed thresholds, as noted in previous case studies. Gradual changes coincided with affected abiotic parameters spanning an expansive time range; for example, climatic effects in spring preceded changes in nutrient limitation. Variables displaying no long‐term changes pointed to compensation processes caused by, e.g., simultaneously acting forces of warming trends and climate‐independent changes in trophic state. Nevertheless, the complexity of response patterns at the single system level manifested clear chronological regime shifts in abiotic and biotic parameters in spring and, to a lesser extent, in summer. With regard to projected global warming, the majority of currently unaffected system levels may face impending thermal thresholds, achievement of which would result in an accelerated shift in ecosystem state.  相似文献

Acoustic features are important for individual and species recognition. However, while dialectal variations in song characteristics have been described in many songbirds, geographical divergence in vocal features across populations has seldom been studied in birds that are not thought to have song-learning abilities. Here, we document marked differences in the vocal structure of calls of two populations of black-legged kittiwakes ( Rissa tridactyla ), a seabird whose call is considered as not being learned from other individuals. We found that calls vary both within and between populations. Within-population variation may convey individual identity, whereas the marked differences in frequency and temporal parameters observed between the two populations may reveal ongoing divergence among kittiwake populations. Moreover, we were unable to detect any sex signature in adult calls in a Pacific population (Middleton, Alaska), while these were detected in an Atlantic population (Hornøya, Norway), potentially affecting sexual behaviours. Despite the fact that these calls seemed to change over the reproductive season and across years, the individual signature remained fairly stable. Such vocal differences suggest that Pacific and Atlantic populations may be undergoing behavioural divergences that may reveal early stages of speciation, as is suggested by molecular data.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 289–297.  相似文献

The apical meristem of the short‐day plant Chenopodium rubrum responds to photoperiodic flower induction with specific changes of pH and Ca2+ patterning immediately after the inductive dark span. The red–far‐red reversibility of the pH and Ca2+ patterning in response to night break treatments was measured in order to distinguish between the effect of the prolonged dark span per se and the specific effect of photoperiodic flower induction. In addition, the pH and Ca2+ patterning in C. rubrum was compared with the long‐day plant Chenopodium murale. The pH was visualized using the fluorescent probe carboxy SNARF‐1. Calcium ion concentrations were studied using a combination of Ca2+‐probes Fluo‐3 and Fura Red. It was observed that the specific changes in pH and Ca2+ patterning at the apical meristem of C. rubrum were abolished by the red‐light break. This effect was fully reversed with a subsequent single far‐red treatment. These observations infer the influence of phytochrome on both pH and Ca2+ patterning. Changes in pH and Ca2+ patterning upon flower induction were observed in both long‐day and short‐day plants. These results support the hypothesis that changes of pH and [Ca2+] in cells of the apical meristem are part of the pathway in signal transduction triggering flower initiation.  相似文献
