Demineralized water was seeded with controlled numbers of oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum purified from fresh calf feces and subjected to different treatments with ozone or chlorine dioxide. The disinfectants were neutralized by sodium thiosulfate, and neonatal mice were inoculated intragastrically and sacrificed 7 days later for enumeration of oocyst production. Preliminary trials indicated that a minimum infection level of 1,000 oocysts (0.1-ml inoculum) per mouse was necessary to induce 100% infection. Treatment of water containing 10(4) oocysts per ml with 1.11 mg of ozone per liter (concentration at time zero [C0]) for 6 min totally eliminated the infectivity of the oocysts for neonatal mice. A level of 2.27 mg of ozone per liter (C0) was necessary to inactivate water containing 5 x 10(5) oocysts per ml within 8 min. Also, 0.4 mg of chlorine dioxide per liter (C0) significantly reduced infectivity within 15 min of contact, although some oocysts remained viable. 相似文献

An excess of thyrotropin (TSH) with normal levels of tetraiodothyronine (T4) and of 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) was confirmed in the serum of 78 trisomy 21 children. A severe deficiency of 3,3',5'-triiodo-thyronine (rT3 or reverse T3) was observed and the decrease of the rT3/TSH ratio was highly significant. These new facts suggest that the rT3 deficiency plays a peculiar role in trisomy 21 (maybe through the regulation of one or few steps of monocarbons' metabolism). A systematic control of thyroid function (including the patient's rT3 level) is mandatory for the follow-up of every trisomy 21 patient. 相似文献

A lectin has been isolated from rhizomes of ground elder (Aegopodium podagraria) using a combination of affinity chromatography on erythrocyte membrane proteins immobilized on cross-linked agarose and hydroxyapatite, and ion-exchange chromatography. The molecular structure of the lectin was determined by gelfiltration, sucrose density-gradient centrifugation and gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions. It has an unusually high Mr (about 480000) and is most probably an octamer composed of two distinct types of subunits with slightly different Mr (about 60000). Hapten inhibition assays indicated that the Aegopodium lectin is preferentially inhibited by N-acetylgalactosamine. Nevertheless, it does not agglutinate preferentially blood-group-A erythrocytes. The ground-elder lectin is a typical non-seed lectin, which occurs virtually exclusively in the underground rhizomes. In this organ it is an abundant protein as it represents up to 5% of the total protein content. The lectin content of the rhizome tissue varies strongly according to its particular location along the organ. In addition, the lectin content changes dramatically as a function of the seasons. The ground-elder lectin differs from all other plant lectins by its unusually high molecular weight. Abstract 32 different strains of Escherichia coli isolated from rabbits with diarrhoea were studied for cell-surface properties which may be involved in intestinal colonisation. Strains isolated from diarrhoeic suckling (6 strains) and weaning (26 strains) rabbits which were shown to attach to brush borders in vivo, showed high relative cell-surface hydrophobicity as determined by the Salt Aggregation Test (SAT) when grown on Colonisation Factor Antigen (CFA) agar at 33°C. Cells of these strains grown to express surface hydrophobicity were also defined as high, moderate or low binders of 125 I-fibronectin or its 125 I-29-kDa fragment in a standard binding assay. Based on these findings, we propose that binding to intestinal cell surface (mucus)-associated fibronectin may be an early important step in intestinal colonisation of the small bowel in enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) diarrhoea in rabbits and other animal species. 相似文献

A lectin was isolated from tulip (Tulipa) bulbs by affinity chromatography on fetuin-agarose and partially characterized. The tulip lectin is a tetrameric protein composed of four identical subunits of Mr 28 000, which are not held together by disulphide bonds. It is not glycosylated and has an amino-acid composition typified by a high content of asparagine-aspartic acid, leucine, glycine and serine. Tulip lectin agglutinates human red blood cells, but has a much higher specific activity with rabbit erythrocytes. In hapten-inhibition assays with the latter type of red blood cell the lectin exhibits a complex specificity, whereas its agglutination with human erythrocytes is readily inhibited by N-acetylgalactosamine, lactose, fucose and galactose.Abbreviations DEAE
