It is generally assumed that male control over mating and a lack of precopulatory female choice are prevalent in many animals and in astigmatan mites in particular. We show that several morphological structures of females of some astigmatan mites are indicative of precopulatory female choice: (1) copulatory tubes acting like intromittent organs; (2) specialized structures assisting male–female attachment and possibly allowing indirect mate selection in immature females; and (3) a unique, pad‐like terminal opisthosomal organ used to cling to the male during copulation in Glaesacarus rhombeus (= Acarus rhombeus Koch et Berendt, 1854) belonging to an extinct family, Glaesacaridae, from the Upper Eocene Baltic amber. An exceptionally well‐preserved copulating pair from amber provides insight into the function of this organ and reproductive behaviour in this mite. Female control over mating may reduce the timing of insemination, harassment by males, and damage caused by copulation. As a consequence, this can lessen male–male aggression, select against precopulatory guarding, and reduce the risk of predation. By contrast to extant taxa, males of G. rhombeus do not have any apparent specialized structures aiding clinging to the female during copulation, suggesting that this mating system is either an earlier step in the evolution of the female‐dominated mating system and/or a remarkable example of imbalanced female counteradaptations against the male's reproductive interest that may occur during an arms race between the two sexes. We offer an approach that can falsify the hypothesis assuming precopulatory female choice and discuss an alternative hypothesis suggesting that these female structures evolved in response to the need to reduce damage associated with mating or precopulatory guarding. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 661–668.  相似文献

The adipokinetic hormones (AKHs) from 15 species of heteropteran Hemiptera (encompassing eight families, six superfamilies and three infraorders) have been isolated and structurally identified using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. None of the structures are novel and all are octapeptides. These peptide sequence data are used, together with the previously available AKH sequence data on Heteroptera, to create a larger dataset for comparative analyses. This results, in total, in AKH sequences from 30 species (spanning 13 families), which are used in a matrix confronted with the current hypotheses on the phylogeny of Heteroptera. The expanded dataset shows that all heteropterans have octapeptide AKHs; three species have two AKHs, whereas the overwhelming majority have only one AKH. From a total of 11 different AKH peptides known from Heteroptera to date, three AKHs occur frequently: Panbo‐red pigment‐concentrating hormone (RPCH) (×10), Schgr‐AKH‐II (×6) and Anaim‐AKH (×4). The heteropteran database also suggests that particular AKH variants are family‐specific. The AKHs of Heteroptera: Pentatomomorpha (all terrestrial) are not present in Nepomorpha (aquatic) and Gerromorpha: Gerridae (semiaquatic); AKHs with a Val in position 2 are absent in the Pentatomomorpha (only AKHs with Leu2 are present), whereas Val2 predominates in the nonterrestrial species. An unexpected diversity of AKH sequences is found in Nepomorpha, Nepoidea, Nepidae and Nepinae, whereas Panbo‐RPCH (which has been identified in all infraorders of decapod crustaceans) is present in all analysed species of Pentatomidae and also in the only species of Tessaratomidae investigated. We monitored the radioligand-binding characteristics of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) receptors, functional activity of Gq/11α proteins, and functional status of the whole signaling cascade in HEK293 expressing high levels of TRH receptors and G11α. Our analyses indicated that disruption of plasma membrane microdomains by cholesterol depletion did not markedly influence the binding parameters of TRH receptors, but it altered efficacy of signal transduction. The functional coupling between TRH receptor and Gq/11α was assessed by agonist-stimulated [35S]GTPγS binding, and results of these measurements pointed out to significantly lower potency of TRH to mediate G protein activation in the plasma membrane fraction isolated from cholesterol-depleted cells; there was a shift in sensitivity by one order of magnitude to the higher concentrations. A markedly lower sensitivity to stimulation with TRH was also observed in our experiments dealing with determination of hormone-induced Ca2+ response. These data suggest that the intact structure of plasma membranes is an important optimum signal transduction initiated by TRH receptors and mediated by Gq/11α proteins.  相似文献

Some neural crest cells give rise to pigment cells in early ontogenesis. We tested here whether tyrosinase-a key enzyme in melanogenesis—was present in some nonpigment neural crest derivatives in adult hamsters. Interestingly enough, inactive tyrosinase protein was detected, using indirect immunofluorescence, in the satellite cells of spinal ganglia and Schwann cells of sciatic and facial nerves in normal adult animals. The results of cell blotting from spinal ganglia were similar to the fluorescence findings. Thus, our results seem to support the hypothesis that Schwann cells, satellite cells of spinal ganglia, and melanocytes may be more intimately related developmentally than other neural-crest-derived cells. Moreover, since we detected tyrosinase protein in cells which normally do not produce melanosomes, it could be deduced that, during the melanocyte's differentiation from its cell precursor, the expression of tyrosinase protein might precede the point when melanosomes begin to differentiate from known cytoplasmic structures.  相似文献

Agroforestry systems may play a critical role in reducing the vulnerability of farmers' livelihood to droughts as tree‐based systems provide several mechanisms that can mitigate the impacts from extreme weather events. Here, we use a replicated throughfall reduction experiment to study the drought response of a cacao/Gliricidia stand over a 13‐month period. Soil water content was successfully reduced down to a soil depth of at least 2.5 m. Contrary to our expectations we measured only relatively small nonsignificant changes in cacao (?11%) and Gliricidia (?12%) sap flux densities, cacao leaf litterfall (+8%), Gliricidia leaf litterfall (?2%), soil carbon dioxide efflux (?14%), and cacao yield (?10%) during roof closure. However, cacao bean yield in roof plots was substantially lower (?45%) compared with control plots during the main harvest following the period when soil water content was lowest. This indicates that cacao bean yield was more sensitive to drought than other ecosystem functions. We found evidence in this agroforest that there is complementary use of soil water resources through vertical partitioning of water uptake between cacao and Gliricidia. This, in combination with acclimation may have helped cacao trees to cope with the induced drought. Cacao agroforests may thus play an important role as a drought‐tolerant land use in those (sub‐) tropical regions where the frequency and severity of droughts is projected to increase.  相似文献

Persistent questions concerning the warning coloration of unpalatable insects address whether the bright aposematic colour itself or its combination with a species-specific dark pattern is the key factor in their protection against insectivorous birds, and how chromatic polymorphism originates and is maintained in aposematics. In the present study, these questions were tested experimentally, using the birds Parus major , Parus caeruleus , Erithacus rubecula , and Sylvia atricapilla as predators, and chromatically polymorphic firebug Pyrrhocoris apterus : red wild form, white, yellow, and orange mutants (all four of them with the same black melanin pattern, the mutants differing in colour of pteridine pigments only) and the nonaposematic brown-painted wild form as prey. The results show that a specific colour is essential for the birds to recognize the specific aposematic prey; the melanin pattern is not sufficient. White mutants were no better protected than nonaposematic firebugs; red wild-type and orange mutants were equally well protected against all bird species; and the reaction of birds to yellow mutants was species-specific. An evolutionary scenario of 'recurrent recessive mutations' is formulated to explain the origin of colour polymorphism in some aposematics.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 143–153.  相似文献
