Tourism accounts for 9% of global GDP and comprises 1.1 billion tourist arrivals per annum. Visits to wildlife tourist attractions (WTAs) may account for 20–40% of global tourism, but no studies have audited the diversity of WTAs and their impacts on the conservation status and welfare of subject animals. We scored these impacts for 24 types of WTA, visited by 3.6–6 million tourists per year, and compared our scores to tourists’ feedback on TripAdvisor. Six WTA types (impacting 1,500–13,000 individual animals) had net positive conservation/welfare impacts, but 14 (120,000–340,000 individuals) had negative conservation impacts and 18 (230,000–550,000 individuals) had negative welfare impacts. Despite these figures only 7.8% of all tourist feedback on these WTAs was negative due to conservation/welfare concerns. We demonstrate that WTAs have substantial negative effects that are unrecognised by the majority of tourists, suggesting an urgent need for tourist education and regulation of WTAs worldwide.  相似文献

The effects of magnesium (Mg) restriction on cell growth and the cell cycle were determined in transformed (TRL-8) and non-transformed (TRL-12-15) epithelial-like rat liver cells. Cells were cultured in RPMI 1640 medium in which the Mg concentration was reduced to 0.5, 0.1, and 0 × the concentration in the regular RPMI 1640 media (100mg/l). Cell growth in the transformed cells was not influenced by the Mg restriction as greatly as in the non-transformed cell line. Transit through the cell cycle also exhibited an independence of the Mg in the medium in the transformed cells. When transformed cells were grown for two generations in Mg-limited medium, the growth rate slowed to a rate similar to that demonstrated by the non-transformed cells. Analysis by flow cytometry showed that transit through the cell cycle was minimally slowed in Mg deficient transformed cells; however, transit through the G1 and S phases in the non-transformed cells was slowed. The TRL-8 cells in Mg-limited medium resulted in fewer nuclei in G1 with subsequent increases in the percentages of S-phase nuclei. The TRL 12-15 cells reacted oppositely with the number of G1 nuclei increased and the number of S-phase nuclei decreased. In respect to growth, these results show that epithelial cells respond in a similar manner to Mg-limitation as do fibroblast cells. The transformed cells exhibited a level of independence from Mg in respect to growth, reproduction, and cell-cycle kinetics.  相似文献

Typical 2-Cys peroxiredoxins are required to remove hydrogen peroxide from several different cellular compartments. Their activity can be regulated by hyperoxidation and consequent inactivation of the active-site peroxidatic cysteine. Here we developed a simple assay to quantify the hyperoxidation of peroxiredoxins. Hyperoxidation of peroxiredoxins can only occur efficiently in the presence of a recycling system, usually involving thioredoxin and thioredoxin reductase. We demonstrate that there is a marked difference in the sensitivity of the endoplasmic reticulum-localized peroxiredoxin to hyperoxidation compared with either the cytosolic or mitochondrial enzymes. Each enzyme is equally sensitive to hyperoxidation in the presence of a robust recycling system. Our results demonstrate that peroxiredoxin IV recycling in the endoplasmic reticulum is much less efficient than in the cytosol or mitochondria, leading to the protection of peroxiredoxin IV from hyperoxidation.  相似文献

The hinge in IgA1 and the linker in endoglucanase A (CenA) are quite similar. The IgA1 hinge is 18 amino acids long and contains only proline, threonine and serine. The linker in CenA is 27 amino acids long and contains only proline, threonine and a single serine. IgA proteases from Neisseria gonorrhoeae cleave Pro-Ser and Pro-Thr bonds within the IgA1 hinge sequence, but they do not attack CenA. When the linker sequence of CenA is replaced with the hinge sequence of IgA1, the hybrid polypeptide is susceptible to the N. gonorrhoeae proteases. Interventions are needed to protect the health of children who live with smokers. We pilot-tested a real-time intervention for promoting behavior change in homes that reduces second hand tobacco smoke (SHS) levels. The intervention uses a monitor and feedback system to provide immediate auditory and visual signals triggered at defined thresholds of fine particle concentration. Dynamic graphs of real-time particle levels are also shown on a computer screen. We experimentally evaluated the system, field-tested it in homes with smokers, and conducted focus groups to obtain general opinions. Laboratory tests of the monitor demonstrated SHS sensitivity, stability, precision equivalent to at least 1 µg/m3, and low noise. A linear relationship (R2 = 0.98) was observed between the monitor and average SHS mass concentrations up to 150 µg/m3. Focus groups and interviews with intervention participants showed in-home use to be acceptable and feasible. The intervention was evaluated in 3 homes with combined baseline and intervention periods lasting 9 to 15 full days. Two families modified their behavior by opening windows or doors, smoking outdoors, or smoking less. We observed evidence of lower SHS levels in these homes. The remaining household voiced reluctance to changing their smoking activity and did not exhibit lower SHS levels in main smoking areas or clear behavior change; however, family members expressed receptivity to smoking outdoors. This study established the feasibility of the real-time intervention, laying the groundwork for controlled trials with larger sample sizes. Visual and auditory cues may prompt family members to take immediate action to reduce SHS levels. Dynamic graphs of SHS levels may help families make decisions about specific mitigation approaches.  相似文献

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia must be seriously considered in the differential diagnosis of acute respiratory distress in neonates as well as in older infants who present with chronic progressive gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms. An x-ray film of the chest is mandatory and is almost always diagnostic. Immediate nasogastric decompression of the stomach, with simultaneous fluid and electrolyte replacement and prompt surgical intervention offers the patient the best chance of survival.  相似文献
