Effect of intestinal microflora on the pathogenesis of cholera intoxication

Germ-free minipigs, previously treated with bacteroids, develop cholinergic reaction after the intragastric administration of Vibrio cholerae exotoxin. The intensity of this reaction, disturbances in homeostasis, and the character of morphological changes depend on the dose of choleragen, the bacteroid strain, and the presence of the concomitant (Escherichia coli) and residual microflora in the intestine.     

The status of the lymphoid system under conditions of lung regeneration stimulation

In experiments on albino rats using cytochemical, autoradiographic, histological and biometrical methods of investigation the authors have shown the participation of the lymphoid system in the development of the compensatory hypertrophic rearrangement in the lung following left-sided pulmonectomy under conditions of regeneration stimulation by exposure to pyrimidine (potassium orotate) and purine (riboxin) derivatives. The dynamics of the regenerative process in the lung, its intensity and stage-by-stage character are clearly reflected in the enzymatic activity of circulating lymphocytes and in synthetic processes in the thymus and spleen.

Interactions of sulfanilamides, penicillins and acetylsalicylic acid in serum protein binding

Combined use of sulfalen and sulfadimethoxine with benzylpenicillin and ampicillin resulted in increased binding of sulfalen to serum proteins of man. Acetylsalicylic acid promoted a decrease in the sulfanilamide binding to the serum proteins. The observed changes in the sulfanilamide binding to proteins of human blood serum were due to increased or decreased affinity of the drugs to the protein molecules.     

A benign approach to the preparation of freshwater bryozoan statoblasts for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging

Abstract

Several different species of freshwater Bryozoa, belonging to the genera Plumatella, Rumarcanella and Fredericella, were detected within the Northern Mallee Pipeline (NMP) system in Victoria, Australia, that required definitive identification. These organisms produce asexual buds called statoblasts, with valves composed of sclerotised chitin that bear minute micro-ornamentations of considerable taxonomical significance. Imaging and analysis of these distinctive micro-ornamentations using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is often employed for species identification. Meticulous preparation of statoblast samples is therefore required that necessitates the removal of adhering debris, dehydration and drying—whilst mitigating specimen damage and distortion. This technical note describes an approach whereby each of these three steps have been individually designed to be as benign as possible, using mild detergent/sonication to remove debris, a gradual and gentle dehydration procedure using ethanol, and critical point drying. For the overall process, these methods are chosen to optimise control and to minimise the use of harsh and hazardous chemicals.     

Immunoprophylaxis of respiratory syncytial virus: global experience

In sarcoidosis, host genetic factors are discussed as contributing to disease susceptibility and course. Since tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α is a central mediator of granuloma formation and since elevated TNF-α levels are found during active phases of sarcoidosis, genetic polymorphisms correlating with influences on TNF-α levels are of special interest. The complete sequencing of the MHC region and the increase in the number of identified gene polymorphisms in this locus associated with TNF-α production offer the opportunity of detecting new genes associated with sarcoidosis and perhaps of defining disease-associated haplotypes that bear the potential of serving as predictive markers for this disease.
