The nocturnally active weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersii is known to employ active electrolocation for the detection of objects and for orientation in its environment. The fish emits pulse‐type electric signals with an electric organ and perceives these signals with more than 3,000 epidermal electroreceptor organs, the mormyromasts, which are distributed over the animal's skin surface. In this study, we measured the metric dimensions of the mormyromasts from different body regions to find structural and functional specialization of the various body parts. We focused on the two foveal regions of G. petersii, which are located at the elongated and movable chin (the Schnauzenorgan; SO) and at the nasal region (NR), the skin region between the mouth and the nares. These two foveal regions were compared to the dorsal part (back) of the fish, which contains typical nonfoveal mormyromasts. While the gross anatomy of the mormyromasts from all skin regions is similar, the metric dimensions of the main substructures differed. The mormyromasts at the SO are the smallest and contain the smallest receptor cells. In addition, the number of receptor cells per organ is lowest at the SO. In contrast, at the back the biggest receptor organs with the highest amount of receptor cells per organ occur. The mormyromasts at the NR are in several respects intermediate between those from the back and the SO. However, mormyromasts at the NR are longer than those at all other skin regions, the canal leading from the receptor pore to the inner chambers were the longest and the overlaying epidermal layers are the thickest. These results show that mormyromasts and the epidermis they are embedded in at both foveal regions differ specifically from those found on the rest of the body. Preventing the establishment of ectoparasitic poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) populations is key in ensuring welfare and egg production of laying hens and absence of allergic reactions of workers in poultry facilities. Using the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point method, a panel of experts identified hazards and associated risks concerning the introduction and spread of this mite in poultry facilities. Together we provide an overview of possible corrective actions that can be taken to prevent population establishment. Additionally, a checklist of the most critical control points has been devised as management tool for poultry farmers. This list was evaluated by Dutch and British poultry farmers. They found the checklist feasible and useful.  相似文献

The rate of degradation of cholecystokinin octapeptide, related fragments and analogs by human and rat plasma was investigated, using high pressure liquid chromatography for the separation and identification of the degradation products.CCK tetrapeptide showed a half-life of 13 min in human plasma while its cleavage in rat plasma occurred at a very high rate (half-life of less than 1 min).The kinetics of disappearance of both sulphated and unsulphated CCK-8 indicated more than a single rate of degradation; the faster degrading system showed a half-life of 18 min for unsulphated CCK-8 and of 50 min for the sulphated peptide in human plasma as compared respectively with 5 and 17 min in rat plasma. The cleavage of CCK-8 was inhibited by bestatin and puromycin, suggesting that aminopeptidases play a major role in the breakdown of this peptide.CCK-9 analogs were rapidly converted into their corresponding octapeptides (half-life of 2.7 min in human plasma). This conversion was inhibited by puromycin and bestatin, suggesting the participation of aminopeptidase(s) probably specific for basic amino acids.CCK decapeptide exhibited a greater stability than the nonapeptides (half-life of 30 and 45 min in human and rat plasma respectively) and also gave rise to CCK-8 as degradation product. This cleavage was not affected by aminopeptidase inhibitors but was decreased by aprotinin (Trasylol®), suggesting that trypsin-like and/or kallikrein-like enzyme(s) were involved in the plasma metabolism of this peptide.  相似文献

Characterization of Newly Formed and Aged Granules in the Neurohypophysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Neurosecretory granules from the rat and bovine neurohypophysis were isolated and some of their biochemical and biophysical properties studied. Neurosecretory granules (NSG) from rat neurohypophysis were labeled, in vivo, with [35S]cysteine and isolated on isoosmotic gradients. Whereas 1 day after labeling most of the radioactivity was found in the lower part of the gradient, 35 days later the isotope was also located in the lighter NSG-containing fraction. Different analytical procedures showed that the lighter fraction, both in bovine and rat NSG, contain more subpopulations of neurophysin-like material than the heavier fraction. The first material to be released during stimulation of secretion, in vivo or in vitro, is mobilized from the heavy NSG. Isolation of rat NSG, at different times during and after dehydration of the animals, reveals that the newly synthesized material is found in the heavy NSG-containing fraction. Furthermore, the results indicate that the newly synthesized NSG are more resistant to lysis than the lighter granules. The results are discussed in relation to the maturation and degradation processes of the granule content and to the functional state of the NSG.  相似文献

Hydrodistillation of the dried leaves of eleven species of the genus Eucalyptus L 'Hér ., i.e., E. astringens Maiden , E. camaldulensis Dehnh ., E. diversifolia Bonpl ., E. falcata Turcz ., E. ficifolia F. Muell ., E. gomphocephala DC., E. lehmannii (Schauer ) Benth ., E. maculata Hook ., E. platypus Hook ., E. polyanthemos Schauer, and E. rudis Endl ., harvested from Korbous arboreta (region of Nabeul, northeast of Tunisia) in April 2006, afforded essential oils in yields varying from 0.1±0.1 to 3.8±0.1%, dependent on the species. E. astringens and E. ficifolia showed the highest and the lowest mean percentage of essential oil amongst all the species examined, respectively. Analysis by GC (RI) and GC/MS allowed the identification of 138 components, representing 74.0 to 99.1% of the total oil. The contents of the different samples varied according to the species. The main components were 1,8‐cineole, followed by trans‐pinocarveol ( 1 ), spathulenol ( 2 ), α‐pinene, p‐cymene, (E,E)‐farnesol, cryptone, globulol ( 3 ), β‐phellandrene, α‐terpineol, viridiflorol, and α‐eudesmol. The principal‐component and the hierarchical‐cluster analyses separated the eleven Eucalyptus leaf essential oils into seven groups, each constituting a chemotype.  相似文献

The effects of an increase in intracellular cAMP concentration on proteoglycan (PG) synthesis by peritubular (PT) cells from immature rat testis were investigated. In the presence of dBcAMP for 72 h, the [3H]-hexosamine incorporation in secreted PG and in cellassociated PG was reduced, whereas [35S]-sulfate radioactivity was enhanced in secreted PG and not affected in cell-associated PG. Cholera toxin and IBMX, known to generate high intracellular cAMP levels, induced similar changes. Cyclic AMP did not alter PG protein moiety synthesis but enhanced PG turnover. Cholera toxin and dBcAMP profoundly modified PG characteristics: (1) Apparent molecular weight of PG was increased. (2) This was due to an increase in glycosaminoglycans (heparan sulfate (HS) and chondroitin sulfate (CS)) length. (3) The number of glycosaminoglycan chains was presumably reduced. (4) Heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate chains of medium and cell layer-associated PG appeared oversulfated. (5) The pattern of cell layer associated PG was modified with a decrease in HSPG and a correlative increase in CSPG. Cholera toxin and dBcAMP also dramatically stimulated hyaluronan synthesis by possible phosphorylation induced activation of hyaluronan synthase(s).  相似文献

Abstract Three membrane-bound acid-stable cytochromes c with molecular masses of 46, 30 and 21 kDa were characterized from a new Thiobacillus ferrooxidans strain. They were solubilized with high concentrations of dodecylmaltoside at pH 8. The 30 kDa cytochrome c was purified to a homogeneous state as established by SDS-PAGE analysis. It showed an absorption peak at 410 nm in the oxidized form and at 418, 523 and 552 nm in the reduced form. The 46 kDa cytochrome c co-purified with a non-heme protein of 36 kDa. The amino acid composition and the N-terminal amino acid sequence of the 46 kDa cytochrome c were determined and compared with those of the soluble 14 kDa and the membrane-bound 21, 22.3 and 68 kDa cytochromes c isolated from two different strains. The results clearly show that this cytochrome is distinct from both the 22.3, 21 and 14 kDa cytochrome species, and exhibits some similarities with the 68 kDa cytochrome c as regards its amino acid composition.  相似文献
