Predicting interactions between drought and plant–insect interactions has been a challenge. Currently, we are unable to accurately predict herbivore abundance on stressed plants despite over 500 publications and half a dozen formal hypotheses. With drought predicted to increase in severity with climate change, determining herbivore abundance on stressed plants is critical for continued agricultural and natural system management. During drought, plants increase concentrations of nutrients and also suffer from water loss. Many empirical studies test drought on plants using severe continuous stress, but studies suggest drought may benefit herbivores when it is intermittent (pulsed). In our study, we tested intermittent and severe stress on herbivore and arthropod abundance in a cotton agro-ecosystem. Our goal was to determine how these types of drought influence herbivore abundance on stressed plants and the relationship between herbivore abundance and stress-related nutrients. We found that intermittent and severe water-deficit stress had different effects on insect herbivores, signifying that drought severity influences herbivore abundance. Piercing–sucking herbivores such as thrips, stink bugs, and leafhoppers were more abundant on intermittently stressed plants than on severely stressed plants. Drought did not significantly affect chewing herbivores, and their abundance was inconsistent on stressed and well-watered plants. Furthermore, nutrient concentrations were similar between stressed and unstressed plants, but herbivore abundance was greater on intermittently stressed plants, suggesting that other physiological characteristics of stressed plants and herbivore feeding ecology must be considered. Our study suggests that the drought severity must be considered when predicting herbivore abundance on stressed plants.  相似文献

  1. This model of stream epilithic biofilm biomass dynamics is based on the system of equations from Uehlinger et al. ( 1996 ) and the term for autogenic detachment of biofilm from Boulêtreau et al. ( 2006 ). Its new features are (i) a mathematical term based on estimated feeding activity of biofilm‐dwelling invertebrates, (ii) local hydrodynamics considered as the principal factor governing algal traits and biofilm structure and (iii) a variable degree of parameterisation that was adjusted to biofilm biomass conditions.
  2. Biofilm biomass was monitored over a one‐year period in the Garonne river in France (September 2008–2009). An allometric approach was used to estimate the feeding activity of biofilm‐dwelling invertebrates based on their energetic requirements. Diatom functional diversity was also monitored to find how it varied with overall biofilm growth patterns. The one‐year monitoring period was divided into six biofilm biomass cycles, with each cycle consisting of a phase of biofilm growth as the main process, followed by detachment.

This model reproduced the observed data as a complex of biofilm growth/detachment cycles using different sets of empirical parameters which allowed (i) the dominant processes involved in each biofilm cycle to be evaluated and (ii) the six cycles of biofilm growth/detachment to be reproduced. This accounted for the observed patterns more effectively than a parameterisation using a single set of empirical parameters.
  4. High flow had a severe effect on biofilm dynamics through chronic and catastrophic detachment. Presumably as a result, assemblages of diatoms shifted towards species that were firmly attached and protected by mucilage.
  5. During low flow (and when temperature was high), biofilm dynamics was mainly affected by autogenic detachment and grazer activity. The grazing pressure of the dominant biofilm‐dwelling invertebrates (Nematoda and larvae of Chironomidae and Trichoptera) was fairly low (a maximum of 6% of biofilm biomass ingested daily); nevertheless, their presence in the biofilm seemed to favour biofilm autogenic detachment.

Among social insects, colony‐level variation is likely to be widespread and has significant ecological consequences. Very few studies, however, have documented how genetic factors relate to behaviour at the colony level. Differences in expression of the foraging gene have been associated with differences in foraging and activity of a wide variety of organisms. We quantified expression of the red imported fire ant foraging gene (sifor) in workers from 21 colonies collected across the natural range of Texas fire ant populations, but maintained under standardized, environmentally controlled conditions. Colonies varied significantly in their behaviour. The most active colonies had up to 10 times more active foragers than the least active colony and more than 16 times as many workers outside the nest. Expression differences among colonies correlated with this colony‐level behavioural variation. Colonies with higher sifor expression in foragers had, on average, significantly higher foraging activity, exploratory activity and recruitment to nectar than colonies with lower expression. Expression of sifor was also strongly correlated with worker task (foraging vs. working in the interior of the nest). These results provide insight into the genetic and physiological processes underlying collective differences in social behaviour. Quantifying variation in expression of the foraging gene may provide an important tool for understanding and predicting the ecological consequences of colony‐level behavioural variation.  相似文献

The mandibleplates of several specimen of the copepodEurytemora affinis collected from the Westerschelde and the Gironde estuary were studied. Using the Edge index (ITOH, 1970) this species could be classified as an omnivore. Pictures obtained by light and scanning electron microscopy reveal that the mandible teeth ofE. affinis have a molar-like structure, which likely changes in functional morphology with developmental stage, sex and age of the adults. ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-5 are aggrecanases responsible for the breakdown of cartilage aggrecan in osteoarthritis. Multiple ADAMTS-4 cleavage sites have been described in several matrix proteins including aggrecan, versican, and brevican, but no concise predictive cleavage motif has been identified for this protease. By screening a 13-mer peptide library with a diversity of 10(8), we have identified the ADAMTS-4 cleavage motif E-(AFVLMY)-X(0,1)-(RK)-X(2,3)-(ST)-(VYIFWMLA), with Glu representing P1. Several 13-mer peptides containing this motif, including DVQEFRGVTAVIR and HNEFRQRETYMVF, were shown to be substrates for ADAMTS-4. These peptides were found to be specific substrates for ADAMTS-4 as they were not cleaved by ADAMTS-5. Modification of these peptides with donor (6-FAM) and acceptor (QSY-9) molecules resulted in the development of fluorescence-based substrates with a Km of approximately 35 microM. Furthermore, the role of Glu at P1 and Phe at P1' in binding and catalysis was studied by exploring substitution of these amino acids with the D-isomeric forms. Substitution of P1 with dGlu was tolerable for binding, but not catalysis, whereas substitution of P1' with dPhe precluded both binding and catalysis. Similarly, replacement of Glu with Asp at P1 abolished recognition and cleavage of the peptide. Finally, BLAST results of the ADAMTS-4 cleavage motif identified matrilin-3 as a new substrate for ADAMTS-4. When tested, recombinant ADAMTS-4 effectively cleaved intact matrilin-3 at the predicted motif at Glu435/Ala436 generating two species of 45 and 5 kDa.  相似文献

Inbreeding depression and selfing rate were investigated in the self-compatible vine Ipomoea hederacea to assess the variability of the breeding system. Inbreeding depression differed between populations and the magnitude varied at germination, growth (as measured by aboveground biomass), and reproductive potential. Plants from Macon County, Alabama, USA, had significant inbreeding depression (31%) at germination, but no significant inbreeding depression for aboveground biomass or number of reproductive structures (buds and flowers) at 45 d post germination in the greenhouse or in the field. Plants from Morgan County, Alabama, however, had significant inbreeding depression (>50%) for all three stages in the greenhouse. In allozyme comparisons, five of the 11 I. hederacea populations surveyed had high selfing rates (66.66-92.53%) and high levels of homozygosity (F(IS) = 0.500-0.861) in 2003, and three of four populations surveyed in 2004 had selfing rates that exceeded 50%. High selfing rates, high levels of homozygosity, and low levels of inbreeding depression suggest that inbreeding depression may not present a significant barrier to the transmission of selfing alleles in some populations of I. hederacea, but does not account for the maintenance of a mixed mating system in other populations.  相似文献

Freshwater tidal estuaries comprise the most upstream reaches of estuaries and are often characterised by the presence of dense bacterial and algal populations which provide a large food source for bacterivorous and algivorous protists. In 1996, the protistan community in the freshwater tidal reaches of the Schelde estuary was monitored to evaluate whether these high food levels are reflected in a similarly high heterotrophic protistan biomass. Protistan distribution patterns were compared to those of metazoan zooplankton to evaluate the possible role of top-down regulation of protists by metazoans. Apart from the algivorous sarcodine Asterocaelum, which reached high densities in summer, heterotrophic protistan biomass was dominated by ciliates and, second in importance, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN). HNAN abundance was low (annual average 2490 cells ml–1) and did not display large seasonal variation. It is hypothesised that HNAN were top-down controlled by oligotrich ciliates throughout the year and by rotifers in summer. Ciliate abundance was generally relatively high (annual average 65 cells ml–1) and peaked in winter (maximum 450 cells ml–1). The decline of ciliate populations in summer was ascribed to grazing by rotifers, which developed dense populations in that season. In winter, ciliate populations were probably regulated `internally' by carnivorous ciliates (haptorids and Suctoria). Our observations suggest that, in this type of productive ecosystems, the microbial food web is mainly top-down controlled rather than regulated by food availability.  相似文献

The natural feeding behaviour of the nematodes Chromadorina bioculata (Schultze in Carus 1857) and Chromadorina viridis (Linstow 1876) was studied in situ, within epilithic biofilms of the Garonne River (France). Based on their feeding-type characteristics and population dynamics, it was hypothesised that these species feed selectively on microphytobenthos (MPB) within the biofilm, and that among MPB groups, diatoms are preferred. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for separation, identification and quantification of pigments both in nematode guts and in the biofilm. This is the first time that nematode gut pigment contents were examined under natural conditions. Diatoms dominated the MPB which also comprised cyanobacteria and green microalgae. The comparison between chlorophyll a content in nematode guts versus in the biofilm showed that C. bioculata and C. viridis fed opportunistically (non-selectively) on MPB within the biofilm. Only diatom biomarker pigments were found in nematode guts suggesting that they could preferentially fed on diatoms among MPB groups. However, the non-detection of biomarker pigments for other microphyte groups could be also linked to HPLC detection limits. It was estimated that Chromadorina nematodes daily ingested on average 0.03–0.67% of the MPB standing stock. This grazing covered only a small part of their energetic requirements, suggesting that besides MPB they probably also fed on other biofilm food sources. Some considerations on the applicability of the HPLC gut pigment analysis technique for the examination of nematode feeding are also presented.  相似文献

We determined the effectiveness of Ni as an elemental defence of Streptanthus polygaloides (Brassicaceae) against a crucifer specialist folivore, diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella. An oviposition experiment used arrays of S. polygaloides grown on Ni-amended (high-Ni) soil interspersed with plants grown on unamended (low-Ni) soil and eggs were allowed to hatch and larvae fed freely among plants in the arrays. We also explored oviposition preference by allowing moths to oviposit on foil sheets coated with high- or low-Ni plant extract. This was followed by an experiment using low-Ni plant extract to which varying amounts of Ni had been added and an experiment using sheets coated with sinigrin (allyl glucosinolate) as an oviposition stimulant. Diamondback moths laid 2.5-fold more eggs on low-Ni plants than on high-Ni plants and larval feeding was greater on low-Ni plants. High-Ni plants grew twice as tall, produced more leaves, and produced almost 3.5-fold more flowers. Low-Ni plants contained more allyl glucosinolate than high-Ni plants and moths preferred to oviposit on foil sheets dipped in low-Ni plant extract. Moths showed no preference when Ni concentration of low-Ni extract was varied and overwhelmingly preferred sinigrin coated sheets. We conclude that Ni hyperaccumulation is an effective elemental defence against this herbivore, increasing plant fitness through a combination of toxicity to DBM larvae and decreased oviposition by adults.  相似文献
