White‐sand forests are patchily distributed ecosystems covering just 5% of Amazonia that host many specialist species of birds not found elsewhere, and these forests are threatened due to their small size and human exploitation of sand for construction projects. As a result, many species of birds that are white‐sand specialists are at risk of extinction, and immediate conservation action is paramount for their survival. Our objective was to evaluate current survey methods and determine the relative effect of the size of patches of these forests on the presence or absence of white‐sand specialists. Using point counts and autonomous recorders, we surveyed avian assemblages occupying patches of white‐sand forest in the Peruvian Amazon in April 2018. Overall, we detected 126 species, including 21 white‐sand forest specialists. We detected significantly more species of birds per survey point with autonomous recorders than point counts. We also found a negative relationship between avian species richness and distance from the edge of patches of white‐sand forest, but a significant, positive relationship when only counting white‐sand specialists. Although we detected more species with autonomous recorders, point counts were more effective for detecting canopy‐dwelling passerines. Therefore, we recommend that investigators conducting surveys for rare and patchily distributed species in the tropics use a mixed‐method approach that incorporates both autonomous recorders and visual observation. Finally, our results suggest that conserving large, continuous patches of white‐sand forest may increase the likelihood of survival of species of birds that are white‐sand specialists.  相似文献

We analyze long-term evolutionary dynamics in a large class of life history models. The model family is characterized by discrete-time population dynamics and a finite number of individual states such that the life cycle can be described in terms of a population projection matrix. We allow an arbitrary number of demographic parameters to be subject to density-dependent population regulation and two or more demographic parameters to be subject to evolutionary change. Our aim is to identify structural features of life cycles and modes of population regulation that correspond to specific evolutionary dynamics. Our derivations are based on a fitness proxy that is an algebraically simple function of loops within the life cycle. This allows us to phrase the results in terms of properties of such loops which are readily interpreted biologically. The following results could be obtained. First, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of optimisation principles in models with an arbitrary number of evolving traits. These models are then classified with respect to their appropriate optimisation principle. Second, under the assumption of just two evolving traits we identify structural features of the life cycle that determine whether equilibria of the monomorphic adaptive dynamics (evolutionarily singular points) correspond to fitness minima or maxima. Third, for one class of frequency-dependent models, where optimisation is not possible, we present sufficient conditions that allow classifying singular points in terms of the curvature of the trade-off curve. Throughout the article we illustrate the utility of our framework with a variety of examples.  相似文献

Optical, resonance Raman, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies have been used to characterize the ligands and spin state of the chloroplast cytochrome b-559. The protein was isolated from both maize and spinach in a low-potential form. The spectroscopic data indicate that the heme iron in both ferric and ferrous cytochrome b-559 is in its low-spin state and ligated in its fifth and sixth coordination positions by histidine nitrogens. Electron paramagnetic resonance data for the purified spinach cytochrome are in good agreement with those determined by Bergstr?m and V?nng?rd [Bergstr?m, J., & V?nng?rd, T. (1982) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 682, 452-456] for a low-potential membrane-bound form of cytochrome b-559. The g values of high-potential cytochrome b-559 are shifted from those of its low-potential forms; this shift is interpreted as arising from a deviation of the planes of the two axial histidine imidazole rings from a parallel orientation. The model is consistent with the physical data and may also account for the facility with which cytochrome b-559 can be converted between low- and high-potential forms. Recent biochemical and molecular biological data [Widger, W. R., Cramer, W. A., Hermodson, M., Meyer, D., & Gullifor, M. (1984) J. Biol. Chem. 259, 3870-3876; Herrmann, R. G., Alt, J., Schiller, D., Cramer, W. A., & Widger, W. R. (1984) FEBS Lett. 179, 239-244] have shown that two polypeptides, one with 83 residues and a second with 39 residues, most likely constitute the protein of the cytochrome.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Weekly sampling and simultaneous measurements of temperature, pH, and conductivity were made at three stations in the reedbelt, between 1980–82. 20 cladoceran and 14 copepod species were encountered, of whichCyclops vicinus vicinus was found in the lake for the first time. Of the measured environmental features, temperature showed the greatest seasonal changes; pH and conductivity were less variable. There were, both quantitatively and qualitatively, constant differences between the three stations, although they lay close to each other.  相似文献

A genetic determinant essential for hemolysin production by Listeria monocytogenes has been inactivated by insertion of transposon Tn916 into L. monocytogenes DNA. The transposon was transferred by means of conjugation of a streptomycin-resistant L. monocytogenes recipient strain with Streptococcus faecalis CG110 on membrane filters. Among the tetracycline-resistant transconjugants, mutants were detected which had lost hemolytic activity. When tested in a mouse model, these mutants appeared to have lost the virulence that characterizes the parental strain. An extracellular protein of 58,000 apparent molecular weight was eliminated in the nonhemolytic mutants. In some of the mutants, the decrease in the production of the 58,000-dalton protein was accompanied by the production of a new protein of 49,000 apparent molecular weight. Hemolytic revertants regained the hemolytic phenotype and virulence and produced the extracellular protein that characterizes the recipient strain. Hybridization studies with Tn916 DNA indicated that the transposon is present in EcoRI and HindIII fragments of the nonhemolytic mutants. Single copies of Tn916 were detected in the chromosomal DNA of two of the three nonhemolytic mutants that were studied in detail. In hemolytic, tetracycline-sensitive revertants Tn916 appeared to be completely excised from the chromosome.  相似文献

Exogenous arachidonic acid does not stimulate insulin release in Ca++-containing medium, but a potent effect was unmasked by extracellular Ca++ depletion. This secretion met several criteria of exocytotic release. It did not require the oxygenation of arachidonate or its esterification into islet membranes, but was potentiated by the presence of 16.7 mM glucose such that 33 microM arachidonate could reverse the inhibitory effects of extracellular Ca++ removal on glucose-induced insulin secretion. Arachidonic acid alone stimulated a rise in intracellular Ca++ concentrations in dispersed islet cells (measured by the fura-2 technique) equal to that induced by 16.7 mM glucose in normal medium. Arachidonic acid may be a critical coupling signal in normal islets.  相似文献

We report the use of poly- and monoclonal antibodies to study the immunohistochemical distribution of glucagon-like peptide-1 immunoreactivity (GLP-1-IR) in various tissues. The polyclonal antibodies against GLP-1 reacted with pancreatic A cells, enteroglucagon (L) cells in the gut, and some neurons in the central nervous system of all species tested. In pancreas and gut the monoclonal antibodies against GLP-1 exhibited a similar, but species specific distribution, relative to the polyclonal antibodies. The colocalization of GLP-1 and glucagon immunoreactivity in pancreatic, intestinal, and nervous tissues is in agreement with previously reported findings that both peptides are part of a single precursor molecule (preproglucagon).  相似文献

Mutant LF-1 of the green alga Scenedesmus obliquus has been described by Metz and co-workers (Metz, J. G., Pakrasi, H., Seibert, M., and Arntzen, C. J. (1986) FEBS Lett. 205, 269-274) to be inactive for light-driven oxygen evolution, despite a functional Photo-system II reaction center. A polypeptide, D1, implicated in the ligation of the primary photoreactants of photosystem II, was shown to migrate with an apparent higher molecular mass on LDS-PAGE in the mutant than in the wild-type (WT) strain. We show here that polypeptide D1 is synthesized in a precursor form in Scenedesmus WT. Following synthesis and insertion into the thylakoid membrane, a 1.5-2-kDa oligopeptide is clipped off with a half-time of 1-2 min, yielding the mature 34-kDa form of the polypeptide. No processing of polypeptide D1 from mutant LF-1 was observed to take place. We show here that polypeptide D1 of LF-1 displays an identical proteolytic fingerprint pattern to the precursor D1 polypeptide of the wild-type strain. These both have molecular masses about 1.5-2 kDa higher than that of the mature WT polypeptide. A polyclonal antibody elicited by a synthetic oligopeptide (14-mer), predicted from the psbA gene nucleotide sequence to be homologous to the COOH terminus of the precursor D1 of spinach, cross-reacts only with D1 of mutant LF-1 and not with mature D1 of spinach, Chlamydomonas, or of Scenedesmus WT. This observation demonstrates that the greater molecular mass of polypeptide D1 from mutant LF-1 and of Scenedesmus WT precursor D1 is derived from a COOH-terminal extension. We conclude that the LF-1 mutant lacks the appropriate nuclear-encoded protease which processes polypeptide D1 at its COOH terminus from the precursor to the mature form. Such processing would appear to be a necessary step toward the stable incorporation of manganese into the oxygen-evolving site.  相似文献
