A metabolomics approach for prediction of bacteremic sepsis in patients in the emergency room (ER) was investigated. In a prospective study, whole blood samples from 65 patients with bacteremic sepsis and 49 ER controls were compared. The blood samples were analyzed using gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Multivariate and logistic regression modeling using metabolites identified by chromatography or using conventional laboratory parameters and clinical scores of infection were employed. A predictive model of bacteremic sepsis with 107 metabolites was developed and validated. The number of metabolites was reduced stepwise until identifying a set of 6 predictive metabolites. A 6-metabolite predictive logistic regression model showed a sensitivity of 0.91(95% CI 0.69–0.99) and a specificity 0.84 (95% CI 0.58–0.94) with an AUC of 0.93 (95% CI 0.89–1.01). Myristic acid was the single most predictive metabolite, with a sensitivity of 1.00 (95% CI 0.85–1.00) and specificity of 0.95 (95% CI 0.74–0.99), and performed better than various combinations of conventional laboratory and clinical parameters. We found that a metabolomics approach for analysis of acute blood samples was useful for identification of patients with bacteremic sepsis. Feeding behavior of macroinvertebrates is significant in determining aquatic ecosystem functioning. However, there is a lack of knowledge on the distribution of feeding guilds, and in particular on the influence of climate on the feeding functions at large spatial and long temporal scales. In this study, lakes at different climatic zones are examined for modern abundances of midge (Diptera) feeding guilds to establish the relationships between the feeding functions and climate. In addition, 11,000-year and 700-year sediment core records are investigated for their midge feeding guilds to establish their long-term relationships with climate changes. The results indicated that feeding guilds had a significant relationship with air temperature in the modern dataset and similar climate-related patterns in trait abundances had also occurred during the important climatic intervals of the past. In addition, the long-term records agreed with the modern spatial dataset in that feeding guild diversity was decreased under warm and cold climate compared to intermediate climate conditions. The results of this study are significant in demonstrating the influence of climate on the functioning of aquatic ecosystems and in providing valuable information on long-term variability in feeding functions that is needed to better understand future changes under the ongoing climate change. 相似文献

In this study, the first reported isolates of the genera Snowella and Woronichinia were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and morphological analysis. Phylogenetic studies and sequences for these genera were not available previously. By botanical criteria, the five isolated strains were identified as Snowella litoralis (Häyrén) Komárek et Hindák Snowella rosea (Snow) Elenkin and Woronichinia naegeliana (Unger) Elenkin. This study underlines the identification of freshly isolated cultures, since the Snowella strains lost the colony structure and were not identifiable after extended laboratory cultivation. In the 16S rRNA gene analysis, the Snowella strains formed a monophyletic cluster, which was most closely related to the Woronichinia strain. Thus, our results show that the morphology of the genera Snowella and Woronichinia was in congruence with their phylogeny, and their phylogeny seems to support the traditional botanical classification of these genera. Furthermore, the genera Snowella and Woronichinia occurred commonly and might occasionally be the most abundant cyanobacterial taxa in mainly oligotrophic and mesotrophic Finnish lakes. In producing power, humans move the nutrients nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from their long‐term geological and biological stocks and release or emit them in soil, water, and the atmosphere. In Finland, peat combustion is an important driver of N and P fluxes from the environment to human economy. The flows of N and P in the Finnish energy system were quantified with partial substance flow analysis, and the driving forces of emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) were analyzed using the ImPACT model. In the year 2000 in Finland, 140,000 tonnes of nitrogen entered the energy system, mainly in peat and hard coal. Combustion released an estimated 66,000 tonnes of N as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nitrous oxides (N2O) and another 74,000 tonnes as elemental N2. Most of the emissions were borne in traffic. At the same time, 6,000 tonnes of P was estimated to enter the Finnish energy system, mostly in peat and wood. Ash was mainly used in earth construction and disposed in landfills; thus negligible levels of P were recycled back to nature. During the twentieth century, fuel‐borne input of N increased 20‐fold, and of P 8‐fold. In 1900–1950, the increasing use of hard coal slowly boosted N input, whereas wood fuels were the main carrier of P. Since 1970, the fluxes have been on the rise. NOx emissions leveled off in the 1980s, though, and then declined in conjunction with improvements in combustion technologies such as NOx removal (de‐NOx) technologies in energy production and catalytic converters in cars. 相似文献

Summary In the metabolism of fructose by Zymomonas, the ethanol yield is decreased due to the formation of dihydroxyacetone, mannitol and glycerol. The reduction of fructose to mannitol by an NADPH-dependent mannitol dehydrogenase is apparently coupled to the oxidation of glucose-6-phosphate by glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, which exhibits higher activity with NADP than with NAD as cofactor. The relatively low cell yield on fructose can partly be explained by the loss of ATP in the formation of dihydroxyacetone and glycerol and partly by the toxic effect of dihydroxyacetone and acetaldehyde on the growth of the organism. 相似文献

Summary Concentrically lamellate spherical bodies have been observed in the oocyte nuclei of the anisopterous dragonflyCordulia aenea. In their ultrastructure, these bodies resemble the cortical granules reported from the cytoplasm of the sea urchin oocytes. The lamellate bodies ofCordulia are compared with other lamellate systems known to exist in nuclei. Nutrient balances and phytoplankton dynamics in two agriculturally loaded shallow lakes 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The impact of agriculture was estimated on two shallow, eutrophic lakes, Lake Kotojärvi and Lake Villikkalanjärvi in southern Finland. The main emphasis was on phosphorus and nitrogen budgets and on the phytoplankton dynamics. Special attention was paid to internal P loading and blue-green algal blooms. The mean Tot-P load from agricultural land was 1.2 kg ha-1 a-1 in both basins and Tot-N loads were 19 kg ha-1 a-1 in L. Villikkalanjärvi and 12 kg ha-1 a-1 in L. Kotojärvi. The Tot-P input to L. Kotojärvi was on an average 0.62 g m-2 a-1 (per lake surface area), and the Tot-N input 9.1 g m-2 a-1. The corresponding inputs to L. Villikkalanjärvi were 3.1 and 57 g m-2 a-1, respectively. The annual variation followed the runoff volumes. About half of the Tot-P and one third of the Tot-N load was retained in L. Kotojärvi. In L. Villikkalanjärvi the retention was only 24% for Tot-P and 19% for Tot-N. The difference was very probably due to a longer theoretical retention time in L. Kotojärvi. In L. Villikkalanjärvi the mean concentration of Tot-P was 120 µg 1-1 and that of Tot-N 1700 µg 1-1 and the corresponding figures in L. Kotojärvi 67 and 990 µg 1-1, respectively. The mean chlorophyll a concentration was, however, higher in L. Kotojärvi (26 µg 1-1) than in L. Villikkalanjärvi (20 µg 1-1). This was probably due to an internal P load in L. Kotojärvi: in 1988 the internal load of dissolved P was estimated to be as much as twofold the external load. In L. Villikkalanjärvi the internal dissolved P load was only up to 50% of the external input. In L. Kotojärvi the high internal P load coupled with a low DIN:DIP ratio resulted in a strong blue-green algal bloom in the summer of 1988. In L. Villikkalanjärvi blue-green algae were observed only in small amounts. Even in August 1990, when the DIN:DIP ratio was low enough to favor the occurrence of blue-green algae, they contributed only up to 10–15% of the total phytoplankton biomass. 相似文献

The genes encoding apolipoproteins (apos) A-I, B, C-III and E as well as that encoding the angiotensin converting enyzme (ACE) have been proposed as candidate genes for coronary heart disease (CHD). We determined the common polymorphisms of the apo genes, previously found to influence serum lipid levels at the population level, and the insertion/deletion polymorphism of the ACE gene, recently reported to reflect the risk of myocardial infarction, in 82 very young (mean, 41 years) North Karelian Finns with symptomatic CHD and 50 controls of similar age. Patients with familial hypercholesterolemia had been excluded from this material. None of the polymorphisms examined, including the apo A-I promoter MspI, apo C-III SstI and apo B XbaI restriction fragment polymorphisms, a common variation of apo E (2, 3 and 4 alleles) and an ACE insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism, was significantly associated with the risk of premature CHD. Patients with CHD had a higher mean serum LDL cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio than controls (3.15±1.30 vs 2.72±0.98, P < 0.05), but no significant associations between the common apo gene polymorphisms and serum lipid levels were disclosed in either group. It is possible that other genetic loci than those proposed to be associated with accelerated atherosclerosis may be more important as risk factors of symptomatic CHD at the age of 40 years. 相似文献
