Background
Welwitschia mirabilis is the only extant member of the family Welwitschiaceae, one of three lineages of gnetophytes, an enigmatic group of gymnosperms variously allied with flowering plants or conifers. Limited sequence data and rapid divergence rates have precluded consensus on the evolutionary placement of gnetophytes based on molecular characters. Here we report on the first complete gnetophyte chloroplast genome sequence, from Welwitschia mirabilis, as well as analyses on divergence rates of protein-coding genes, comparisons of gene content and order, and phylogenetic implications. 相似文献2.

Although humans usually prefer mates that resemble themselves, mating preferences can vary with context. Stress has been shown to alter mating preferences in animals, but the effects of stress on human mating preferences are unknown. Here, we investigated whether stress alters men''s preference for self-resembling mates. Participants first underwent a cold-pressor test (stress induction) or a control procedure. Then, participants viewed either neutral pictures or pictures of erotic female nudes whose facial characteristics were computer-modified to resemble either the participant or another participant, or were not modified, while startle eyeblink responses were elicited by noise probes. Erotic pictures were rated as being pleasant, and reduced startle magnitude compared with neutral pictures. In the control group, startle magnitude was smaller during foreground presentation of photographs of self-resembling female nudes compared with other-resembling female nudes and non-manipulated female nudes, indicating a higher approach motivation to self-resembling mates. In the stress group, startle magnitude was larger during foreground presentation of self-resembling female nudes compared with other-resembling female nudes and non-manipulated female nudes, indicating a higher approach motivation to dissimilar mates. Our findings show that stress affects human mating preferences: unstressed individuals showed the expected preference for similar mates, but stressed individuals seem to prefer dissimilar mates. 相似文献

In utero bone marrow transplantation to fetuses offers the potential advantage of ameliorating the effects of genetic disorders by transplanting allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells into recipients who are immunoincompetent and require no preparative regimen. Therefore, we undertook studies to examine the feasibility of in utero bone marrow transplantation of unrelated allogeneic adult bone marrow into fetal baboons. Thirty-one baboon fetuses were transplanted between the ages of 60 and 160 days gestation (normal gestation, 182 days) with unrelated allogeneic adult bone marrow containing a different isozyme of glucose-phosphate isomerase (GPI). Approximately one third of the 80-day fetuses demonstrated engraftment 1 month after transplantation. Three of three of the initial chimeras died in utero 45 to 80 days after transplantation and the remaining chimeras lost their graft. Furthermore, 80-day fetal baboons were able to recognize donor cells, maternal cells, and other adult baboon peripheral blood cells in a mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC) reaction but still could engraft with allogeneic bone marrow. In contrast all nonchimeric animals survived to term. These data suggest that fetal transplantation of primates is feasible using techniques employed in these studies and that transplantation of younger fetuses who are immunocompetent should be attempted. 相似文献

The objective was to determine the effect of chronic testosterone (T) treatment on GnRH and LH secretion in wethers. Rams were either castrated only or castrated and immediately treated with Silastic implants containing T. Several weeks later, a device for collecting hypophyseal-portal blood was surgically implanted. Six to seven days later, blood samples were collected simultaneously and continuously from the portal vessels and jugular vein of pairs of conscious animals. Samples were divided at 10-min intervals for 6-12 h. One hour before the end of collection, all animals received i.v. injections of 250 ng of GnRH. In samples collected simultaneously from 6 pairs of animals, T reduced the frequency of both GnRH pulses (1.8 +/- 0.2 vs. 0.9 +/- 0.3/h, p less than 0.03) and LH pulses (1.6 +/- 0.1 vs. 0.8 +/- 0.3/h, p less than 0.03). T did not alter amplitude of either GnRH or LH pulses. Testosterone reduced mean GnRH (9.7 +/- 0.6 vs. 7.9 +/- 0.5 pg/ml, p less than 0.05), whereas mean LH was not significantly reduced (9.6 +/- 1.4 vs. 6.1 +/- 1.8 ng/ml, p = 0.16). The nonhistone chromosomal protein HMG1 associated rapidly with the nuclei of HeLa cells and bovine fibroblasts following its introduction into the cytoplasm by red cell-mediated microinjection. A number of non-nuclear proteins, on the other hand, failed to concentrate in HeLa or bovine fibroblast nuclei. Autoradiography of thin sections showed that 125I-labeled HMG1 localized within nuclei, and further established that it remained associated with metaphase chromosomes at mitosis. When uninjected HeLa cells were fused with 125I-HMG1-injected HeLa cells, the labeled molecules equilibrated between nuclei within 12 hr. Similar results were obtained with bovine fibroblasts, indicating that a dynamic equilibrium exists between HMG1 and chromatin within living cells. Electrophoresis of 125I-HMG1 retrieved from HeLa cells or bovine fibroblasts up to 48 hr after injection showed that more than 80% of the molecules were intact. Autoradiographic analysis of cells fixed over a period of several days after injection produced apparent half-lives for 125I-HMG1 of 80 hr in HeLa cells and 100 hr in bovine fibroblasts. 相似文献

The binding of prostaglandins and analogs to the lipocyte PGE receptor was shown to exhibit a high degree of structural specificity. Small changes, particularly at the 9-keto or 15-hydroxy position, were found to drastically diminish interaction with the receptor. Studies of a rather substantial number of compounds revealed a close relationship between affinity for the lipocyte PGE receptor and the ability to stimulate cyclic AMP synthesis in the isolated mouse ovary. One of the major causes of worldwide amphibian declines is a skin infection caused by a pathogenic chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis). This study documents the interactions between this pathogen and a susceptible amphibian host, the boreal toad (Bufo boreas). The amount of time following exposure until death is influenced by the dosage of infectious zoospores, duration of exposure,
and body size of the toad. The significant relation between dosage and the number of days survived (dose-response curve) supports
the hypothesis that the degree of infection must reach a particular threshold of about 107–108 zoosporangia before death results. Variation in air temperature between 12°C and 23°C had no significant effect on survival
time. The infection can be transmitted from infected to healthy animals by contact with water containing zoospores; no physical
contact between animals is required. These results are correlated with observations on the population biology of boreal toads
in which mortalities associated with B.
