The rat excretes around 2 nmol epidermal growth factor (EGF) in the urine per 24 h. The urinary EGF might be derived from plasma and/or might be synthesized in the kidneys. We have used the rat to study the renal uptake and excretion of homologous EGF from plasma. I.v. injected 125I-EGF was removed from the circulation within a few minutes. 5 min after the injection, the kidneys contained 12% of the 125I-EGF. The kidneys seemed to degrade most of the 125I-EGF which they accumulated from blood, as only 4% of the injected label was excreted as intact 125I-EGF in the urine. The amount of endogenous EGF in plasma was under the detection limit of our enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (0.03 nmol/l) and it remained so after bilateral nephrectomy. Even if plasma EGF was 0.03 nmol/l excretion of EGF from plasma could account for less than 5% of the urinary EGF. This study shows that the kidneys are able to accumulate EGF from plasma and excrete a part of it as intact EGF in the urine. Abstract Saccharomyces cerevisiae was inoculated into a yeast nitrogen base with either glycerol or glucose as carbon source. Cell proliferation was followed by colony counts on agar medium. Cells in the glycerol-supplemented medium divided less than once in 10 days. When glucose, 6-deoxy-glucose or protoporphyrin IX was added, the cells had doubling times of about 24 h and increased in number to about 0.5 × 106 cells ml−1 Addition of either of the protein kinase C activators oleoyl-acetylglycerol or phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate did not activate cell proliferation in the glycerol medium. However, when (i) glucose was combined with either protoporphyrin IX or chlorophyllin, or (ii) either protoporphyrin IX or chlorophyllin was combined with either of the protein kinase C activators, the cells had doubling times of about 12 h. Hence, (i) glucose can act as both a carbon source and a signalling molecule for proliferation, and (ii) two systems are involved in activating cell proliferation in S. cerevisiae : one operating through a protein kinase C system and another through a guanylate cyclase system. 相似文献

The reproductive behavior of six species of tenebrionid beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) was studied in the Namib Desert of southern Africa. In three species, males follow closely behind females (following behavior), while in the other three species, males mount females and remain clasped to them for extended periods (riding behavior). Following behavior occurs before and sometimes after copulation, while riding behavior occurs primarily after copulation. Males of all six species guard females from contesting males, although the effectiveness of guarding is greater in riding species. The evolution of the two male mating strategies does not appear to be related to operational sex ratio differences but, rather, to differential tendencies of females to remate. Variation in total pair duration within following and riding species may be attributed partly to species differences in operational sex ratio. PCO2 in the lumen and serosa of cecum and jejunum was measured in mice. The anesthetic used was a fentanyl-fluanisone-midazolam mixture. PCO2 was recorded in vivo and postmortem. PCO2 was 409 +/- 32 Torr (55 +/- 4 kPa) in the cecal lumen and 199 +/- 22 Torr (27 +/- 3 kPa) on the serosa in normal mice. Irrigation of the cecum resulted in serosal and luminal PCO2 levels of 65-75 Torr. Cecal PCO2 was significantly lower in germ-free mice (65 +/- 5 Torr). Cecal PCO2 increased significantly after introduction of normal bacterial flora into germ-free mice. Introduction of bacterial monocultures into germ-free mice had no effect. After the deaths of the mice, cecal PCO2 increased rapidly in normal mice. The intestinal bacteria produced the majority of the cecal PCO2, and the use of tonometry in intestinal segments with a high bacterial activity should be interpreted with caution. We propose that serosal PCO2 levels >150-190 Torr (20-25 kPa) in the cecum of mice with a normal circulation may represent a state of gas supersaturation in the cecal wall. 相似文献

Breeding records of 11 taxa of captive lemurs housed at the Duke University Primate Center (DUPC), North Carolina, were analyzed
for differences in the timing of births, for the relationship between breeding season and photoperiod, and for differences
in litter size. At DUPC there are significant differences in the timing of births among certain taxa, including differences
among some subspecies of Lemur fulvus.However, changes in latitude result in changes in the timing of the breeding season. Lemurs moved to higher latitudes mate
at lower light-dark ratios than on Madagascar. The data presented here are consistent with the following model: a photoperiodic
cue initiating reproductive activity, presumably a light-dark threshold, precedes the actual mating season by approximately
2 months, with an intervening period of physiological and social preparation. On Madagascar, selection may have favored births
that coincide with the end of dry seasons and the beginning of wet seasons, which results in lactation and weaning during
times of resource abundance. Taxa from the north and east have the highest mean litter sizes; those from the west have the
