A sample of 989 male youngsters aged 11–18 years was subdivided into three groups by the type and amount of their physical
activity as follows.
Group 1 (G1) had a maximum of three curricular PE classes a week, without any additional organized physical activity. With
the same number of PE lessons Group 2 (G2) had at most three sessions of sports training per week in addition. Group 3 (G3)
had a weekly minimum of five training sessions in addition to the PE lessons at school.
The subjects of G3 had significantly higher relative aerobic power, larger relative muscle mass and smaller relative body
fat content than the subjects of the other two groups.
The effects of sports training on the development of physical working capacity are undeniable, but to explain such differences
observed in relative aerobic power between the groups requires also the consideration of inheritance and selection procedure. 相似文献

1. The consumption of arsenic is toxic to most biota. However, a noctuid caterpillar was recently reported feeding on a plant known to hyperaccumulate arsenic. 2. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of arsenic‐rich Pteris vittata L. consumption by Callopistria floridensis G., and measure differences in arsenic concentrations at various stages of development (larval and adult), and associated with exuviae and frass. 3. Callopistria floridensis accumulated extraordinary concentrations of arsenic. The relative accumulation of arsenic was highest in exuviae and larvae. Larvae invariably preferred P. vittata grown on low arsenic soil to P. vittata grown on higher soil arsenic concentrations, and appeared able to selectively forage on lower arsenic concentrations within each treatment. 4. These findings show that C. floridensis is tolerant of arsenic, and successfully develops to adulthood containing elevated concentrations of arsenic. Callopistria floridensis represents the only known terrestrial animal capable of accumulating arsenic, and may have developed novel physiological and behavioural adaptations to regulate the negative effects of arsenic. 相似文献

A threonine-12 to alanine mutant of E. coli asparaginase II (EC 3.5.1.1) has less than 0.01% of the activity of wild-type enzyme. Both tertiary and quaternary structure of the enzyme are essentially unaffected by the mutation; thus the activity loss seems to be the result of a direct impairment of catalytic function. We aimed to verify a custom virtual fields method (VFM) to estimate the patient-specific biomechanical properties of human optic nerve head (ONH) tissues, given their full-field deformations induced by intraocular pressure (IOP). To verify the accuracy of VFM, we first generated ‘artificial’ ONH displacements from predetermined (known) ONH tissue biomechanical properties using finite element analysis. Using such deformations, if we are able to match back the known biomechanical properties, it would indicate that our VFM technique is accurate. The peripapillary sclera was assumed anisotropic hyperelastic, while all other ONH tissues were considered isotropic. The simulated ONH displacements were fed into the VFM algorithm to extract back the biomechanical properties. The robustness of VFM was also tested against rigid body motions and noise added to the simulated displacements. Then, the computational speed of VFM was compared to that of a gold-standard stiffness measurement method (inverse finite element method or IFEM). Finally, as proof of principle, VFM was applied to IOP-induced ONH deformation data (obtained from one subject’s eye imaged with OCT), and the biomechanical properties of the prelamina and lamina cribrosa (LC) were extracted. From given ONH displacements, VFM successfully matched back the biomechanical properties of ONH tissues with high accuracy and efficiency. For all parameters, the percentage errors were less than 0.05%. Our method was insensitive to rigid body motions and was also able to recover the material parameters in the presence of noise. VFM was also found 125 times faster than the gold-standard IFEM. Finally, the estimated shear modulus for the prelamina and the LC of the studied subject’s eye were 33.7 and 63.5 kPa, respectively. VFM may be capable of measuring the biomechanical properties of ONH tissues with high speed and accuracy. It has potential in identifying patient-specific ONH biomechanical properties in the clinic if combined with optical coherence tomography. 相似文献

Albeit previous experiments suggest potential anti-inflammatory effect of exogenous methane (CH4) in various organs, the mechanism of its bioactivity is not entirely understood. We aimed to investigate the potential mitochondrial effects and the underlying mechanisms of CH4 in rat cardiomyocytes and mitochondria under simulated ischaemia/reperfusion (sI/R) conditions. Three-day-old cultured cardiomyocytes were treated with 2.2% CH4-artificial air mixture during 2-hour-long reoxygenation following 4-hour-long anoxia (sI/R and sI/R + CH4, n = 6-6), with normoxic groups serving as controls (SH and SH + CH4; n = 6-6). Mitochondrial functions were investigated with high-resolution respirometry, and mitochondrial membrane injury was detected by cytochrome c release and apoptotic characteristics by using TUNEL staining. CH4 admixture had no effect on complex II (CII)-linked respiration under normoxia but significantly decreased the complex I (CI)-linked oxygen consumption. Nevertheless, addition of CH4 in the sI/R + CH4 group significantly reduced the respiratory activity of CII in contrast to CI and the CH4 treatment diminished mitochondrial H2O2 production. Substrate-induced changes to membrane potential were partially preserved by CH4, and additionally, cytochrome c release and apoptosis of cardiomyocytes were reduced in the CH4-treated group. In conclusion, the addition of CH4 decreases mitochondrial ROS generation via blockade of electron transport at CI and reduces anoxia-reoxygenation-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and cardiomyocyte injury in vitro. 相似文献

While aberrant protein glycosylation is a recognized characteristic of human cancers, advances in glycoanalytics continue to discover new associations between glycoproteins and tumorigenesis. This glycomics‐centric study investigates a possible link between protein paucimannosylation, an under‐studied class of human N‐glycosylation [Man1‐3GlcNAc2Fuc0‐1], and cancer. The paucimannosidic glycans (PMGs) of 34 cancer cell lines and 133 tissue samples spanning 11 cancer types and matching non‐cancerous specimens are profiled from 467 published and unpublished PGC‐LC‐MS/MS N‐glycome datasets collected over a decade. PMGs, particularly Man2‐3GlcNAc2Fuc1, are prominent features of 29 cancer cell lines, but the PMG level varies dramatically across and within the cancer types (1.0–50.2%). Analyses of paired (tumor/non‐tumor) and stage‐stratified tissues demonstrate that PMGs are significantly enriched in tumor tissues from several cancer types including liver cancer (p = 0.0033) and colorectal cancer (p = 0.0017) and is elevated as a result of prostate cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia progression (p < 0.05). Surface expression of paucimannosidic epitopes is demonstrated on human glioblastoma cells using immunofluorescence while biosynthetic involvement of N‐acetyl‐β‐hexosaminidase is indicated by quantitative proteomics. This intriguing association between protein paucimannosylation and human cancers warrants further exploration to detail the biosynthesis, cellular location(s), protein carriers, and functions of paucimannosylation in tumorigenesis and metastasis. 相似文献

Understanding the dynamics of foot‐and‐mouth disease virus (FMDV), an endemic and economically constraining disease, is critical in designing control programmes in Africa. This study investigates the evolutionary epidemiology of SAT1 and SAT2 FMDV in Eastern Africa, as well as between cattle and wild African buffalo. Bayesian phylodynamic models were used to analyse SAT1 and SAT2 VP1 gene segments collected between 1975 and 2016, focusing on the SAT1 and SAT2 viruses currently circulating in Eastern Africa. The root state posterior probabilities inferred from our analyses suggest Zimbabwe as the ancestral location for SAT1 currently circulating in Eastern Africa (p = 0.67). For the SAT2 clade, Kenya is inferred to be the ancestral location for introduction of the virus into other countries in Eastern Africa (p = 0.72). Salient (Bayes factor >10) viral dispersal routes were inferred from Tanzania to Kenya, and from Kenya to Uganda for SAT1 and SAT2, respectively. Results suggest that cattle are the source of the SAT1 and SAT2 clades currently circulating in Eastern Africa. In addition, our results suggest that the majority of SAT1 and SAT2 in livestock come from other livestock rather than wildlife, with limited evidence that buffalo serve as reservoirs for cattle. Insights from the present study highlight the role of cattle movements and anthropogenic activities in shaping the evolutionary history of SAT1 and SAT2 in Eastern Africa. While the results may be affected by inherent limitations of imperfect surveillance, our analysis elucidates the dynamics between host species in this region, which is key to guiding disease intervention activities. 相似文献
