Review of the East Asian species of the genera Hybrizon Fallén and Ghilaromma Tobias (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Hybrizontinae)

East Asian species of the genera Hybrizon and Ghilaromma are reviewed. Four species of Hybrizon, H. buccatus (Brébisson 1825), H. ghilarovi Tobias, 1988, H. juncoi (Ceballos 1957) and H. flavofacialis Tobias, 1988 and two species of Ghilaromma, G. orientalis Tobias, 1988 and G. ussuriensis Tobias, 1988, were recognized. H. ghilarovi was recorded from Korea, Japan and China, while H. juncoi was recorded from Korea, for the first time. The specimens recorded from Japan as G. fuliginosi (Wilkinson, 1930) by Watanabe (1984) are referred to G. orientalis herein. This species is newly recorded from Korea and Japan. Keys to East Asian species of Hybrizon and the world species of Ghilaromma are also provided.     

A new extragenic suppressor of cya mutation. Mutant cyclic AMP receptor protein with an increased affinity for cyclic AMP.

A strain bearing an extragenic suppressor of cya mutation was isolated as a second-site revertant of an adenylate cyclase deficient strain. The mutant was unable to synthesize cAMP but showed normal fermentation profiles and growth properties on a variety of carbon sources. The site of reversion was mapped in, or near, the structural gene for the cAMP receptor protein. Structural alteration of the protein was directly demonstrated by the following biochemical observations: (i) A 10-fold decrease in the dissociation constant for cAMP, (ii) an acidic shift in the isoelectric point, and (iii) the altered binding properties to lambdah80dlac ps DNA.     

The AtXTH28 Gene, a Xyloglucan Endotransglucosylase/Hydrolase, is Involved in Automatic Self-Pollination in Arabidopsis thaliana

Successful automatic self-pollination in flowering plants isdependent on the correct development of reproductive organs.In the stamen, the appropriate growth of the filament, whichlargely depends on the mechanical properties of the cell wall,is required to position the anther correctly close to the stigmaat the pollination stage. Xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolases(XTHs) are a family of enzymes that mediate the constructionand restructuring of xyloglucan cross-links, thereby controllingthe extensibility or mechanical properties of the cell wallin a wide variety of plant tissues. Our reverse genetic analysishas revealed that a loss-of-function mutation of an ArabidopsisXTH family gene, AtXTH28, led to a decrease in capability forself-pollination, probably due to inhibition of stamen filamentgrowth. Our results also suggest that the role of AtXTH28 inthe development of the stamen is not functionally redundantwith its closest paralog, AtXTH27. Thus, our finding indicatesthat AtXTH28 is specifically involved in the growth of stamenfilaments, and is required for successful automatic self-pollinationin certain flowers in Arabidopsis thaliana.     

Effects of Suanzaorentang on behavior changes and central monoamines

Previously, it was found that the ancient Chinese remedy of Suanzaorentang could be a promising anxiolytic drug (Chen and Hsieh, 1985a, Chen and Hsieh, 1985b). To understand the mechanism of the action of Suanzaorentang, the effects of Suanzaorentang on behavior changes and central monoamines and their metabolites were studied in rats. It was found that Suanzaorentang significantly (1) prolonged the period from the onset of clonic to tonic convulsions induced by pentylenetetrazol or picrotoxin, (2) prolonged the sleep duration induced by hexobarbital, (3) reduced locomotor activity, (4) enhanced the hypomotility induced by alpha-MT, (5) reduced the locomotor stimulation produced by levodopa plus benserazide, and (6) reduced central HVA, VMA, and 5-HIAA, but had no significant effects on central DA, NA, and 5-HT. These facts implied that Suanzaorentang decreased the turnover rate of central monoamines and central catecholaminergic activity.     

Morphological and electrophysiological characteristics of the epipharyngeal sensilla of the silkworm, Bombyx mori

One pair of gustatory sensilla was found on the epipharynx ofBombyx mori larvae, and some morphological and electrophysiological characteristics of the epipharyngeal sensilla were investigated. They are sensilla coeloconica composed of a small papilla with a pore at the tip and a swelling of cuticle encircling the papilla. Three bipolar neurons innervate each sensillum. One neuron is an inositol receptor which responds to inositol only. Another cell responds with action potentials of relatively large amplitude to some feeding deterrent substances, such as strychnine nitrate. The thresholds of these cells for inositol and strychnine nitrate are approximately 10⁻⁴ M and 10⁻⁷ M, respectively. At least two kinds of spikes can be observed when these sensilla are stimulated with some salts and acids. Dose-response relationships and time courses of responses to inositol and strychnine nitrate were also examined in this study.
