Out-migrating juvenile Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in California’s Central Valley lack frequent access to historical off-channel habitats such as floodplains. However, many regions have agricultural floodplains that may provide habitat value to young salmon. To determine the suitability of agricultural floodplain, this study tested whether winter-inundated rice fields in a historic flood basin in California’s Central Valley could provide adequate food resources for rearing juvenile Chinook Salmon. We examined the suitability of flooded rice fields for three post-harvest habitat types: stubble, fallow, and disced. Soil emergent and pelagic zooplankton communities were compared to determine colonization sources. Winter-inundated rice fields had high densities of zooplankton, which increased over the course of the study. Daphnia pulex, a large-bodied cladoceran and an excellent forage species of juvenile Chinook Salmon, was abundant in our study. Cladocerans colonized via source water while ostracods likely colonized from a soil egg bank. Overall, there was no discernable effect of habitat type on zooplankton community structure or density, except for D. pulex. Our results suggest that flooded agricultural rearing habitat can support juvenile Chinook Salmon based on high densities of zooplankton and other suitable habitat conditions have the potential to support a robust aquatic food web. 相似文献

The copy frequency distribution of a transposable element family in a Drosophila melanogaster natural population is generally characterised by the values of the Charlesworths' model parameters α and β (Charlesworth & Charlesworth, 1983). The estimation of these parameters is made using the observed distribution of the occupied sites in a population sample. Several results have been interpreted as due either to the influence of stochastic factors or to deterministic factors (transposition, excision, selection…). The accuracy of this method was tested by estimations performed on samples from simulated populations. The results show that with the sample size usually used for natural population studies, the confidence intervals are too large to reasonably deduce either the element copy number distribution or the values of transposition and excision rate and selective coefficients. 相似文献

A set of procedures is offered for assessing interraler reliability and certain aspects of validity of codes in cross-cultural studies. The method assumes that at least two independent raters have coded more than one trait. Each trait coded by one rater is correlated with each trait coded by a second, and all the codings by a single rater are intercorrelated with each other. The results are presented in a multitrait-multi-rater matrix. A histotopographic study of the nasal septum mucosa in rats was made using semi-serial sections stained with PAS-hematoxylin, reconstructed in form of maps representing the structure in a sagittal plane. The stratified squamous, respiratory and olfactory epithelia and Masera's organ cover 14.8, 43.6, 41.6 and 1.8%, respectively, of the septal surface (117.1 mm2). In the vestibular region, only ducts of PAS-negative glands of the respiratory region are found, and below the septum there is the infraseptal gland with PAS-negative acini. In the respiratory region, PAS-negative acinous glands form two groups: the superior and the inferior one occupying 10.5 and 1.5%, respectively, of the septal area. PAS-positive acinous glands are in the inferior half of the respiratory region and in a small anteroinferior portion of the olfactory region. Besides goblet cells broadly distributed, the respiratory epithelium presents scattered intraepithelial PAS-positive glands which are concentrated in the anterior portion and close to the nasopharyngeal duct. In the olfactory region prevail Bowman's PAS-positive glands which are also present in the mucosa of Masera's organ, but are not seen in the olfactory mucosa of Jacobson's organ. In the latter, PAS-positive glands are found in the respiratory mucosa. Globular leukocytes, cells of connective tissue origin, are constantly infiltrating the superior regions of the respiratory and olfactory epithelia, being more numerous in female rats. 相似文献

Homologous recombination and the repair of double-strand breaks during cotransformation of Dictyostelium discoideum. 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We examined the ability of unlinked nonreplicating plasmid molecules to undergo homologous recombination during cotransformation of Dictyostelium amoebae. The transformation vector B10S confers resistance to the antibiotic G418 and was always presented to amoebae as a closed circle. Cotransforming DNA, containing a slime mold cDNA and sequences homologous to the primary vector, was presented either as a closed circle or as a linear molecule after digestion with restriction endonucleases which cut within one of three distinct regions of the plasmid. Remarkably, homologous recombination occurred in every clone examined. Moreover, the products of recombination were identical in all instances, irrespective of the presence or position of linearized ends. The ends of the linear templates were not recombinogenic. Repair of the introduced double-strand break occurred frequently during recombination. The repair could occur intermolecularly or, more likely, intramolecularly, i.e., by recircularization. Many of the recombination events were of a nonreciprocal nature. Despite the startlingly frequent level of homologous recombination, the use of cotransforming DNA which contains no homology to the selected vector established that such recombination was not required for cotransformation. 相似文献

In 9 (24%) out of 38 African women who had suffered a ruptured tubal pregnancy significant numbers of fetal erythrocytes (5 or more per 150,000 maternal cells) were found in the maternal circulation. This is a higher incidence than occurs after abortion and indicates that rupture of a tubal pregnancy is a potential source of Rh isoimmunization. The finding of fetal cells in the peritoneal cavity suggests that this is the main source of the fetal blood found in the maternal circulation. At operation on Rh-negative patients with ruptured tubal pregnancies, therefore, complete removal of the peritoneal blood should be attempted and the blood recovered should never be transfused into the patient, who should always receive prophylactic Rh immunoglobulin. 相似文献
