Thermal inhibition and photoinhibition of plants, which may occur simultaneously in nature, were investigated to determine whether the two causal stresses interact and to characterize any interactions that occurred. Photosynthetic rates of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Len) seedlings declined gradually after temperature treatment increased from 22 to 42°C or after photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) treatment increased from 450 to 2000 micromoles per square meter per second and fell rapidly after the stresses were simultaneously imposed. Stomatal conductance and internal CO2 were affected little, indicating the interaction occurred in chloroplasts. Thylakoid whole chain electron transport, quantum yield, and saturating PAR intensity were decreased by high temperature and an additional amount by high PAR treatments. Photosystem reactions involving water oxidation were inhibited more than other reactions, and chlorophyll fluorescence transients indicated most inhibition was on the photooxidizing side of photosystem II. Injury was influenced little by the order in which the stresses were imposed and was always most severe when they were combined. Release of proteins from thylakoid membranes was not detected. Lability to the stresses was lowest in thylakoids from vegetative stage plants and increased as plants matured. We concluded that thermal injury is accentuated by high PAR, the two stresses may act at a common site near the water oxidizing complex, and their interaction may be involved in photosynthetic decline during adverse conditions.  相似文献

High temperature stress adversely affects wheat growth in many important production regions, but the mode of injury is unclear. Wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. cv. Newton) was grown under controlled conditions to determine the relative magnitude and sequences of responses of source and sink processes to high temperature stress during grain development. Regimes of 25°C day/15°C night, 30°C day/20°C night, and 35°C day/25°C night from 5 days after anthesis to maturity differentially affected source and sink processes. High temperatures accelerated the normal decline in viable leaf blade area and photosynthetic activities per unit leaf area. Electron transport, as measured by Hill reaction activity, declined earlier and faster than other photosynthetic processes at the optimum temperature of 25/15 °C and at elevated temperatures. Changes in RUBP carboxylase activities were similar in direction but smaller in magnitude than changes in photosynthesic rate. Increased protease activity during senscence was markedly accentuated by high temperature stress. Specific protease activity increased 4-fold at 25/15 °C and 28-fold at 35/25 °C from 0 to 21 days after initiation of temperature treatments. Grain-filling rate decreased from the lowest to the highest temperature, but the change was smaller than the decrease in grain-filling duration at the same temperatures. We concluded that a major effect of high temperature is acceleration of senescence, including cessation of vegetative and reproductive growth, deterioration of photosynthetic activities, and degradation of proteinaceous constituents.  相似文献

Infections with five geographical strains and substrains of Schistosoma mansoni were compared in mice. Two substrains (Lc-1 and Lt-1) were derived from the parent (L-1) St. Lucian strain on the basis of differing infectivity for various snail strains. The Puerto Rican strains (PR-1 and PR-2) were obtained with an interval of 25 years. Consistent differences among the lines were found in egg distribution and numbers of eggs in tissues and feces. One Puerto Rican strain (PR-2) and one St. Lucian substrain (Lc-1) had longer prepatent periods than the other strains. Mice infected with the PR-1 strain consistently had the highest egg accumulation in the tissues per worm pair. Relatively few eggs were passed in the feces of the Lt-1 strain. By Week 9 of infection, eggs were noted in the spleens of mice carrying each of the strains and substrains.  相似文献

A series of 4-amino-5-((4-chlorophenyl)diazenyl)-6-(alkylamino)-1-methylpyrimidin-2-one deri- vatives 7–16 were prepared by nucleophilic displacement of 6-chloro-pyrimidine 6 by various amines. 4-Amino-5-((aryl-4-yl)diazenyl)-6-aryl-1-methylpyrimidin-2-one analogs 19–27, as well as 4-amino-5-((aryl-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)diazenyl)-6-aryl-1-methylpyrimidin-2-one 29–31 and 4-amino-6-aryl-1-methylpyrimidin-2-one 34–34, were synthesized via Suzuki cross-coupling reaction, using Pd(PPh3)4 as a catalyst and arylboronic acids as reagents. All compounds were evaluated for their antiviral activity against the replication of HIV-1 and HIV-2 in MT-4. Compounds 6, 16, 27, and 29 showed a 50% effective concentration of >2.15, >3.03, >2.29, and >1.63 μM, respectively, but no selectivity was observed (selectivity index < 1). Two of the newly synthesized pyrimidines 12 and 29 exhibited moderate kinesin Eg5 inhibition.  相似文献

Two new diprenylated dihydrochalcones, elastichalcone A 1 and elastichalcone B 2 and three known compounds were isolated from the leaves of Artocarpus elasticus. Their structures were determined by various spectroscopic techniques (UV, IR, MS, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR). Elastichalcone B 2 and a known compound exhibited good free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 11.30 and 11.89 μg/ml, respectively.  相似文献

Neutral and niche theories give contrasting explanations for the maintenance of tropical tree species diversity. Both have some empirical support, but methods to disentangle their effects have not yet been developed. We applied a statistical measure of spatial structure to data from 14 large tropical forest plots to test a prediction of niche theory that is incompatible with neutral theory: that species in heterogeneous environments should separate out in space according to their niche preferences. We chose plots across a range of topographic heterogeneity, and tested whether pairwise spatial associations among species were more variable in more heterogeneous sites. We found strong support for this prediction, based on a strong positive relationship between variance in the spatial structure of species pairs and topographic heterogeneity across sites. We interpret this pattern as evidence of pervasive niche differentiation, which increases in importance with increasing environmental heterogeneity.  相似文献

Transgenic mice expressing interleukin-12 (IL-12) under the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) promoter were evaluated for their sensitivity to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection of the cornea. There was a modest but significant decrease in the infiltration of mononuclear cells in the cornea of the GFAP-IL12 transgenic mice compared to the wild-type controls during the acute stage of infection. However, during the latent stage of infection (i.e., day 30 postinfection) GFAP-IL12 transgenic mice had significantly more infiltrating cells in the corneal stroma compared to the wild-type controls. The infiltration was exacerbated by depleting transgenic mice of either CD4(+) or CD8(+) cells at the time of infection. In addition, infiltration of mononuclear cells was associated with the expression of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) by cells in the cornea. Consistent with increases in tissue associated TGF-beta was the presence of anterior subcapsular cataracts in the GFAP-IL12 transgenic mice. Although the GFAP-IL12 transgenic mice are highly resistant to HSV-1 infection in the eye, this resistance is not related to local expression of TGF-beta1 per se because transgenic mice expressing TGF-beta1 driven by the lens-specific alphaA-crystallin promoter succumb to HSV-1 infection at a similar rate as wild-type controls.  相似文献
