A computer algorithm to determine the recognition site of restriction enzymes

How the Visual Cortex Handles Stimulus Noise: Insights from Amblyopia

Adding noise to a visual image makes object recognition more effortful and has a widespread effect on human electrophysiological responses. However, visual cortical processes directly involved in handling the stimulus noise have yet to be identified and dissociated from the modulation of the neural responses due to the deteriorated structural information and increased stimulus uncertainty in the case of noisy images. Here we show that the impairment of face gender categorization performance in the case of noisy images in amblyopic patients correlates with amblyopic deficits measured in the noise-induced modulation of the P1/P2 components of single-trial event-related potentials (ERP). On the other hand, the N170 ERP component is similarly affected by the presence of noise in the two eyes and its modulation does not predict the behavioral deficit. These results have revealed that the efficient processing of noisy images depends on the engagement of additional processing resources both at the early, feature-specific as well as later, object-level stages of visual cortical processing reflected in the P1 and P2 ERP components, respectively. Our findings also suggest that noise-induced modulation of the N170 component might reflect diminished face-selective neuronal responses to face images with deteriorated structural information.     

Neurochemical evidence for two types of presynaptic alpha2-adrenoceptors

Neurochemical and pharmacological evidence has been obtained that noradrenergic varicosities (in mouse and rat vas deferens) and cholinergic varicosities (in the Auerbach's plexus) contain heterogenous alpha₂-adrenoceptors through which the release of [³H]noradrenaline and [³H]acetylcholine can be modulated. The quantitative data also support the hypothesis that different noradrenaline and xylazine sensitive alpha₂-adrenoceptors are present prejunctionally in the vas deferens and Auerbach's plexus preparations. Prazosin, although it has a presynaptic inhibitory effect on alpha₂-adrenoceptors of noradrenergic axon terminals, has no effect on cholinergic axon terminals. These data suggest that there are two different types of alpha₂-adrenoceptors at the presynaptic axon terminals.Special Issue Dedicated to Dr. Abel Lajtha     

Penicillin-binding proteins of protoplast and sporoplast membranes of Streptomyces griseus strains

Membrane-bound penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) of two Streptomyces griseus strains that sporulate well in liquid and solid medium have been investigated during the course of their life-cycle. The PBP patterns were analyzed by sodium dodecylsulphate polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis and fluorography. One strain (No. 45 H) has only a single band (mol wt: 27,000) in early log phase, and two additional PBPs of higher mol wt (69,000 and 80,000) in the late log phase. The other strain (No. 2682) possessed two bands with mol wts 27,000 and 38,000 which did not change during its vegetative phase. In strain No. 2682, a new PBP with a mol wt of 58,000 appeared in spore membranes while one of those (mol wt 38,000) present in mycelial membranes disappeared. Our results suggest that appearance of the new PBP in the spore may be associated with the sporulation process. The major PBP band (mol wt: 27,000) present in all stages of the life cycle of these strains, may be characteristic of S. griseus while the other PBPs reflect certain stages of the life cycle. Further data on the origin of gonadotropin releasing hormone in the median eminence of the rat hypothalamus

Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) content of the two halves of the median eminence of the rat hypothalamus was determined by radioimmunoassay three weeks after three different unilateral knife cuts around the preoptic area. A unilateral cut in front or above the area caused a more than 25% decrease in the GnRH content of the two halves of the median eminence. A cut lateral to the preoptic region had only a slight effect similar to that observed after sham operations. The data suggest that probably more than 50% of the rat median eminence GnRH derives from outside the preoptic-suprachiasmatic region. The GnRH fibres projecting to the median eminence but arising from outside the preoptic region, probably mainly from GnRH perikarya in the limbs of the diagonal band of Broca and septum, enter this area partly from rostral and partly from above, but not from lateral direction. partly from rostral and partly from above, but not from lateral direction. Several of these fibres probably cross before terminating in the median eminence.     

Inhibition of sodium for sodium exchange by phlorizin in frog sartorius muscle

The effects of phlorizin (2 X 10(-3) mol X l-1) on the Na transport of frog (Rana esculenta) sartorius muscle were investigated in glucose-free medium. Phlorizin decreased the rate coefficient of 24Na efflux by about 40%. The degree of inhibition was comparable to that caused by ouabain (10(-4) mol X l-1). Phlorizin could evoke a further reduction in the 24Na efflux also in the presence of ouabain. The intracellular Na content of the phlorizin-treated muscles remained unchanged, in contrast to a 60% increase induced by ouabain. 42K uptake was not affected by phlorizin. Data indicate that the ouabain-sensitive Na-K pump was not involved in the action of phlorizin. At the same time, phlorizin failed to alter the residual 24Na efflux measured in Li-Ringer solution containing ouabain. When Na: Na exchange was restored by replacing Na into the washout solution in the presence of ouabain, the increase of 24Na efflux was significantly diminished by phlorizin. Phlorizin reduced the 24Na uptake into a compartment with a half time of 6 min by about 40% without affecting the intracellular compartment. The results suggest that phlorizin inhibits the ouabain-insensitive Na: Na exchange in a superficial Na compartment.     

Formation of partially phosphorylated phosphorylase in isoproterenol stimulated rat hearts

Summary Phosphorylase ab hybrid was demonstrated in perfused rat hearts and during the in vitro conversion of purified rat heart phosphorylase b. Phosphorylase ab hybrid was determined in rat heart extracts by the activating effect of AMP in the presence of caffeine. These results were confirmed by the quantitative determination of incorporated ³²P in vitro and through the characteristic inhibition of ab hybrid by glucose-6-phosphate.As shown by our results, in aerobically perfused control hearts only the ab hybrid represents the active form of phosphorylase, its activity reaching about 20% of the total. In response to isoproterenol (5–1000 ng), the amount of ab hybrid rose to about 30–40%, preceding the rise of the a form, which increased in a dose-dependent manner up to 45% of the total.The great sensitivity of the ab form to AMP activation and glucose-6-phosphate inhibition supports its physiological significance in heart under in vivo conditions as well. Our results strongly suggest that the activity ratio -AMP/+AMP reflects rather the percentage ratio of phosphorylated subunits than that of the activated (partially or totally phosphorylated) phosphorylase molecules.
