Whilst studies have shown that climatic (North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)) and biotic (acorn production) factors influence rodent populations, mechanisms driving temporal and spatial fluctuation of rodent populations are understudied. This study evaluates relationships between the influence of environmental factors (biotic and abiotic) and phenotypic characteristics across two rodent feeding guilds (granivorous and non-granivorous species) represented by four species of rodents in Central Europe. We hypothesise that the relationship between acorn density and population growth rate are indirectly affected by climatic factors (winter NAO) and that these effects differ amongst herbivorous and granivorous species. In addition, we also tested whether effects of weather and competition on individual phenotype characteristic vary amongst mast and non-mast years. Rodent populations were estimated by catching individuals in snap traps during the growing season (from March to November) over a period of 9 years at three sites. The results of the generalised linear model provide evidence that acorn production best explained the population fluctuations. We therefore conclude that the between-year population fluctuations in rodent abundance were governed by density dependence and initiated primarily by acorn mast years. Auto-regressive models also revealed direct density dependence in combination with the direct effects of mast years. Therefore, strong intraspecific competition for food is likely in years following mast years. Our results also showed that abundance of non-granivorous species is mainly influenced by local weather conditions which could regulate food quality and abundance. On the other hand, population dynamics of granivorous species are caused directly by acorn density and indirectly by climatic condition influencing acorn production.  相似文献

Antiviral effects of acyclic nucleoside phosphonates PMEA, (S)-HPMPC, PMEDAP, and ribavirin on double-stranded DNA Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) were evaluated in Brassica pekinensis plants grown in vitro on liquid medium. A double-antibody sandwich ELISA was used for relative quantification of viral protein and PCR for detection of CaMV nucleic acid in plants. Ribavirin and PMEA had no significant antiviral effect. (S)-HPMPC at concentration 50?mg?l?1 and PMEDAP at concentrations 50 and 12.5?mg?l?1 significantly (P?<?0.05) reduced CaMV concentration in plants within 42?C63?days to levels detectable neither by ELISA nor by PCR. A phytotoxicity experiment resulted in progressive yellowing of leaves and dwarfing in plants cultured 42?days on media with concentrations 12.5, 25 and 50?mg?l?1 of (S)-HPMPC and PMEDAP. Reduction in fresh and dry weights of plants was significant (P?<?0.05) already at 12.5?mg?l?1 with both compounds.  相似文献

16- and 4-week-old intact and adrenalectomized rats have been treated with different doses of the three glucocorticoids hydrocortisone, prednisolone and dexamethasone by gavage. The delayed feedback effect on plasma ACTH and corticosterone response to an ether stress have been assessed. Almost complete suppression of corticosterone response 20 min after an ether stress and an ACTH suppression to 20% of control values 5 min after an ether stress were observed with 25 micrograms of dexamethasone, 10 mg of prednisolone and 20 mg of hydrocortisone. Although the percent inhibition of corticosterone and ACTH response to stress was comparable, a striking dissociation of the ACTH and corticosterone release was observed in terms of absolute concentrations. A mean ACTH concentration of 462 ng/l after 25 micrograms of dexamethasone was measured together with a barely measurable corticosterone concentration of 3 micrograms%. Similarly, after 10 mg of prednisolone, the mean ACTH concentration was 404 ng/l, whilst the mean corticosterone concentration was 3 micrograms%. This dissociation demonstrates that the corticosterone concentration on its own does not necessarily reflect the ACTH release. At 4 weeks of age, the ACTH response to stress is more difficult to suppress than in adult animals. This is more obvious after adrenalectomy, where the excessive ACTH secretion was less inhibited by all glucocorticoids used. The time between the last steroid gavage and stress must be considered. In 4-week-old animals the ACTH response 16 h after 12.5 micrograms of dexamethasone was inhibited by 22%, whereas 4 h after the same dexamethasone dose the inhibition was 85%.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Isoflavones (ISOs) are bioactive food ingredients of the traditional East Asian diet and currently discussed as alternatives to classical hormone replacement therapies and for reducing the prevalence of hormone-dependent cancers. Although there are many studies on ISOs, not much is known about their long-term effects.Therefore, we performed an animal experiment analyzing the effects of three different diets: a phytoestrogen-free diet, a diet supplemented with genistein (700 μg/g diet) and an ISO-high diet (232 μg daidzein and 240 μg genistein/g) at two distinct time points, juvenile (21 days) and adult (97 days). Exposure started prior to mating of the parents and throughout the life of the offspring.We observed a stronger increase of uterine wet weights in juvenile offspring with genistein exposure (1018 ± 350 mg/kg BW) than with ISO-high diet (497 ± 133 mg/kg BW). Whereas the expression of proliferation related genes (PCNA; Ki67; IGF-1; IGF-1R), analyzed by real-time-qPCR and Western blot, were significantly down-regulated in juvenile animals exposed to genistein. Additionally, genistein exposure led to estrogenic responses, observed upon increase of complement C3 and decrease of estrogen receptors gene expressions, while the exposure to ISO-high diet did not show these effects.In conclusion, both the time point on which phytoestrogen exposure starts together with the composition of the ingested phytoestrogen containing diet are of great importance for the biological response of the offspring.  相似文献

Today, indigenous forests cover less than 0.6% of South Africa's land surface and are highly fragmented. Most forest relicts are very small and typically occur in fire‐protected gorges along the eastern Great Escarpment. Yet, they hold a unique and valuable fauna with high endemism and ancient phylogenetic lineages, fostered by long‐term climatic stability and complex microclimates. Despite numerous studies on southern African vegetation cover, the current state of knowledge about the natural extension of indigenous forests is rather fragmentary. We use an integrated approach of population‐level phylogeography and climatic niche modeling of forest‐associated chafer species to assess connectivity and extent of forest habitats since the last glacial maximum. Current and past species distribution models ascertained potential fluctuations of forest distribution and supported a much wider potential current extension of forests based on climatic data. Considerable genetic admixture of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA among many populations and an increase in mean population mutation rate in Extended Bayesian Skyline Plots of all species indicated more extended or better connected forests in the recent past (<5 kya). Genetic isolation of certain populations, as revealed by population differentiation statistics (), as well as landscape connectivity statistics and habitat succession scenarios suggests considerable loss of habitat connectivity. As major anthropogenic influence is likely, conservational actions need to be considered.  相似文献
