The aim of this study was to propose and validate a post-hoc correction method to obtain maximal power values taking into account inertia of the flywheel during sprints on friction-loaded cycle ergometers. This correction method was obtained from a basic postulate of linear deceleration-time evolution during the initial phase (until maximal power) of a sprint and included simple parameters as flywheel inertia, maximal velocity, time to reach maximal velocity and friction force. The validity of this model was tested by comparing measured and calculated maximal power values for 19 sprint bouts performed by five subjects against 0.6-1 N kg(-1) friction loads. Non-significant differences between measured and calculated maximal power (1151+/-169 vs. 1148+/-170 W) and a mean error index of 1.31+/-1.20% (ranging from 0.09% to 4.20%) showed the validity of this method. Furthermore, the differences between measured maximal power and power neglecting inertia (20.4+/-7.6%, ranging from 9.5% to 33.2%) emphasized the usefulness of power correcting in studies about anaerobic power which do not include inertia, and also the interest of this simple post-hoc method.  相似文献

Cold acclimation is a multigenic trait that allows hardy plants to develop efficient tolerance mechanisms needed for winter survival. To determine the genetic nature of these mechanisms, several cold-responsive genes of unknown function were identified from cold-acclimated wheat (Triticum aestivum). To identify the putative functions and structural features of these new genes, integrated genomic approaches of data mining, expression profiling, and bioinformatic predictions were used. The analyses revealed that one of these genes is a member of a small family that encodes two distinct groups of multispanning transmembrane proteins. The cold-regulated (COR)413-plasma membrane and COR413-thylakoid membrane groups are potentially targeted to the plasma membrane and thylakoid membrane, respectively. Further sequence analysis of the two groups from different plant species revealed the presence of a highly conserved phosphorylation site and a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchoring site at the C-terminal end. No homologous sequences were found in other organisms suggesting that this family is specific to the plant kingdom. Intraspecies and interspecies comparative gene expression profiling shows that the expression of this gene family is correlated with the development of freezing tolerance in cereals and Arabidopsis. In addition, several members of the family are regulated by water stress, light, and abscisic acid. Structure predictions and comparative genome analyses allow us to propose that the cor413 genes encode putative G-protein-coupled receptors.  相似文献

Most depth recorders used to study the diving behaviour of polar marine endotherms record depth data at specific time intervals. The length of recording interval can have potentially profound implications for the interpretation of the data. We used data acquired on the diving behaviour of king penguins, Aptenodytes patagonicus, to examine the validity of various analyses routinely conducted on depth data. In our experiments, increasing the sampling interval led to an underestimation of the number of dives performed, an overestimation in mean dive duration and substantial changes in the form of the dive profile. Our analysis indicates that depth data should be recorded at a minimum rate corresponding to 10% of the total dive duration and that conventional dive profile categorization may be inappropriate. Alternatives that are less subjective, and based on curve fits of dive depth versus time, are proposed.  相似文献

A fundamental goal in animal ecology is to quantify how environmental (and other) factors influence individual movement, as this is key to understanding responsiveness of populations to future change. However, quantitative interpretation of individual-based telemetry data is hampered by the complexity of, and error within, these multi-dimensional data. Here, we present an integrative hierarchical Bayesian state-space modelling approach where, for the first time, the mechanistic process model for the movement state of animals directly incorporates both environmental and other behavioural information, and observation and process model parameters are estimated within a single model. When applied to a migratory marine predator, the southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina), we find the switch from directed to resident movement state was associated with colder water temperatures, relatively short dive bottom time and rapid descent rates. The approach presented here can have widespread utility for quantifying movement–behaviour (diving or other)–environment relationships across species and systems.  相似文献

The developed model of gravitropism takes non-instantaneous maturation of wood into account which enabled to correctly simulate different gravitropic phases and realistic internal stress profiles.

Abstract

A new biomechanical model of tree movement in relation to gravity (gravitropism) is proposed in this study. The modelling of the progressive maturation of wood cells is taken into account, as well as spatio-temporal variations in maturation strains (MS) and mechanical properties. MS were identified using an inverse method that allows the model to fit the gravitropic reaction observed experimentally. For this purpose, the curvature during righting movement, the geometry and the mass distribution of a two-year-old poplar tree was measured. The identified MS are higher than expected, which shows the underestimation of MS by usual measurements. By using the same mechanical parameters and MS as an input, the model gives satisfying results in terms of shape modelling for different trees up to 32 days after tree tilting. The model is able to simulate the latency phase observed in the tree righting movement, and the internal stress profile in the trunk is realistic (low compressive value in the central part of the trunk and zero stress in newly formed cells). The next development of the model will aim to simulate the end of the gravitropic phase in relation with the regulation of MS by the tree.  相似文献

Aerobic exercise capacity is decreased at altitude because of combined decreases in arterial oxygenation and in cardiac output. Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction could limit cardiac output in hypoxia. We tested the hypothesis that acetazolamide could improve exercise capacity at altitude by an increased arterial oxygenation and an inhibition of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction. Resting and exercise pulmonary artery pressure (Ppa) and flow (Q) (Doppler echocardiography) and exercise capacity (cardiopulmonary exercise test) were determined at sea level, 10 days after arrival on the Bolivian altiplano, at Huayna Potosi (4,700 m), and again after the intake of 250 mg acetazolamide vs. a placebo three times a day for 24 h. Acetazolamide and placebo were administered double-blind and in a random sequence. Altitude shifted Ppa/Q plots to higher pressures and decreased maximum O(2) consumption ((.)Vo(2max)). Acetazolamide had no effect on Ppa/Q plots but increased arterial O(2) saturation at rest from 84 +/- 5 to 90 +/- 3% (P < 0.05) and at exercise from 79 +/- 6 to 83 +/- 4% (P < 0.05), and O(2) consumption at the anaerobic threshold (V-slope method) from 21 +/- 5 to 25 +/- 5 ml.min(-1).kg(-1) (P < 0.01). However, acetazolamide did not affect (.)Vo(2max) (from 31 +/- 6 to 29 +/- 7 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)), and the maximum respiratory exchange ratio decreased from 1.2 +/- 0.06 to 1.05 +/- 0.03 (P < 0.001). We conclude that acetazolamide does not affect maximum exercise capacity or pulmonary hemodynamics at high altitudes. Associated changes in the respiratory exchange ratio may be due to altered CO(2) production kinetics.  相似文献

Arachidonic acid (AA)-derived eicosanoids belong to a complex family of lipid mediators that regulate a wide variety of physiological responses and pathological processes. They are produced by various cell types through distinct enzymatic pathways and act on target cells via specific G-protein-coupled receptors. Although originally recognized for their capacity to elicit biological responses such as vascular homeostasis, protection of the gastric mucosa and platelet aggregation, eicosanoids are now understood to regulate immunopathological processes ranging from inflammatory responses to chronic tissue remodelling, cancer, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune disorders. Here, we review the major properties of eicosanoids and their expanding roles in biology and medicine.  相似文献

Several Peronospora species are carried by wind over short and long distances, from warmer climates where they survive on living plants to cooler climates. In eastern Canada, this annual flow of sporangia was thought to be the main source of Peronospora destructor responsible for onion downy mildew. However, the results of a recent study showed that the increasing frequency of onion downy mildew epidemics in eastern Canada is associated with warmer autumns, milder winters, and previous year disease severity, suggesting overwintering of the inoculum in an area where the pathogen is not known to be endogenous. In this study, genotyping by sequencing was used to investigate the population structure of P. destructor at the landscape scale. The study focused on a particular region of southwestern Québec—Les Jardins de Napierville—to determine if the populations were clonal and regionally differentiated. The data were characterized by a high level of linkage disequilibrium, characteristic of clonal organisms. Consequently, the null hypothesis of random mating was rejected when tested on predefined or nonpredefined populations, indicating that linkage disequilibrium was not a function of population structure and suggesting a mixed reproduction mode. Discriminant analysis of principal components performed with predefined population assignment allowed grouping P. destructor isolates by geographical regions, while analysis of molecular variance confirmed that this genetic differentiation was significant at the regional level. Without using a priori population assignment, isolates were clustered into four genetic clusters. These results represent a baseline estimate of the genetic diversity and population structure of P. destructor.  相似文献

Since the appearance of the review entitled "Plant Proteome Analysis" in Proteomics in February 2004 (Cánovas, F. M., Dumas-Gaudot, E., Recorbert, G., Jorrín, J. et al., Proteomics 2004, 4, 285-298), about 200 original articles focusing on plant proteomics have been published. Although this represents less than 1% of the global proteomics output during this period, it nevertheless reflects an increase in activity over the period 1999-2004. These papers concern the proteome of at least 35 plant species but have concentrated mainly on thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) and rice (Oryza sativa). The scientific objectives have ranged from a proteomic analysis of organs, tissues, cell suspensions, or subcellular fractions to the study of plant development and response to various stresses. A number of contributions have covered PTMs and protein interactions. The dominant analytical platform has been 2-DE coupled to MS, but "second generation" techniques such as DIGE, multidimensional protein identification technology, isotope-coded affinity tags, and stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture have begun to make an impact. This review aims to provide an update of the contribution of proteomics to plant biology during the period 2004-2006, and is divided into six sections: introduction, subcellular proteomes, plant development, responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, PTMs, and protein interactions. The conclusions summarize a view of the major pitfalls and challenges of plant proteomics.  相似文献
