Abstract In the field, the population density (n) of crowded, living ramets of Salvinia molesta ranged from 2500 m ?2 in nutrient-poor water to more than 30 000 m?2 in nutrient-rich water. Biomass of living shoots (B) in some localities exceeded 600 gm?2 dry weight (150 tonnes ha?1 fresh weight) and shoots plus roots of living and floating dead material exceeded 1600 gm?2 dry weight (400 tonnes ha?1 fresh weight). The ultimate limit B= 105n0.5 suggested by previous authors was not exceeded. The highest n and smallest ramets occurred in nutrient-rich water and B was a linear function of n. Field experiments confirmed no effect of n, but a strong effect of nutrient availability, on ramet weight. In a glasshouse experiment, ramet populations did not ‘self-thin’ along the log log B-n trajectory of slope -0.5, which has been suggested for aclonal plants, but followed trajectories having slopes closer to +1.0 before halting at the ambient B-n limit. Nutrient concentrations in the plants increased during the experiment, causing ramet size to decrease and slopes of log log B-n trajectories to depart from +1.0 by amounts which reflected the degree to which nutrient concentration had changed. Under constant conditions, mean ramet size is expected to remain constant and log log B-n trajectories to travel in a straight line of slope +1.0 to the ambient B-n limit. This behaviour of salvinia, whose ramets consist of a single structural module, is contrasted with that expected of clonal plants whose ramets are made up of multiple structural modules. A logistic model explained the increases in n and biomass of living and dead ramets when ramets were assumed to have constant longevity, constant time to decay, and when both the B-n limit and size of ramets were dependent on nitrogen content of the plant. There was no indication that physiological integration within phenets halted production of new ramets when carrying capacity was reached and new ramets continued to be produced on top of older ramets. Rates of ramet mortality were equal to, and dependent on, rates of ramet natality.  相似文献

Heating locally the hypocotyl of Bidens pilosa L. elicits awave of depolarization. The mechanism of the wave has been investigatedby means of microelectrophysiological techniques. The amplitudeof the transmembrane potential variation induced by an extracellularion concentration change (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Cl) was thesame in the resting conditions as during the slow wave. At pH4.0, the amplitude of the slow wave was reduced by 56% comparedwith the control performed at pH 7.0. In the presence of theuncoupler CCCP, the slow wave was not observed. The Ca2+ -chelatorEGTA and the Ca22+ -channel blocker La3+ reduced, respectively, the amplitude of the slow wave by 78% and 68%. These resultsindicate the involvement of Ca2+ in triggering the slow wave.A transient modification of the electrogenic H+ pump activity(inactivation-activation) and of the transmembrane H+ flux inthe slow wave are discussed. Brood reduction, the death of one or more chicks through siblicide or starvation, can occur through density‐dependence in fecundity. Brood reduction may arise in territorial breeding systems either as a response to a high level of territorial interference in a situation of high density or as a result of habitat heterogeneity. To test the predictions of the two main hypotheses that attempt to explain how density‐dependent fecundity is generated, the Habitat Heterogeneity Hypothesis (HHH) and the Individual Adjustment Hypothesis (IAH), we analysed the relationship between density and fecundity in an expanding population of Booted Eagles in Doñana National Park, Spain, using an 18‐year data series. We also studied the occurrence and frequency of brood reduction in the same Booted Eagle population to appreciate further its effects and the factors that influence its occurrence and frequency. Our results support the HHH in the present situation of high density, as fecundity in the better territories (older and more frequently occupied) was higher than in low quality territories and was not affected by population density in high density periods. Nevertheless, the fecundity of high quality territories was affected (although not significantly) by population density in periods of low density, suggesting that the IAH was supported when only high quality territories were occupied. Older territories were used more frequently and chicks in these areas hatched earlier and suffered lower mortality than in new territories. We found a significant negative relationship between mean fecundity and its skewness, a finding that also supports HHH. During years of food shortage, less frequently occupied territories suffered higher rates of brood reduction. Brood reduction in this Booted Eagle population was a consequence of the heterogeneous structure of the habitat, with some territories having a higher probability of brood reduction than others. Parental nutritional condition did not affect brood reduction. The effect of brood reduction on nestling quality and population dynamics is also discussed.  相似文献

1. Leaf litter constitutes the major source of organic matter and energy in woodland stream ecosystems. A substantial part of leaf litter entering running waters may be buried in the streambed as a consequence of flooding and sediment movement. While decomposition of leaf litter in surface waters is relatively well understood, its fate when incorporated into river sediments, as well as the involvement of invertebrate and fungal decomposers in such conditions, remain poorly documented. 2. We tested experimentally the hypotheses that the small interstices of the sediment restrict the access of the largest shredders to buried organic matter without compromising that of aquatic hyphomycetes and that fungal decomposers in the hyporheic zone, at least partly, compensate for the role of invertebrate detritivores in the benthic zone. 3. Alder leaves were introduced in a stream either buried in the sediment (hyporheic), buried after 2 weeks of exposure at the sediment surface (benthic‐hyporheic), or exposed at the sediment surface for the entire experiment (benthic). Leaf decomposition was markedly faster on the streambed surface than in the two other treatments (2.1‐ and 2.8‐fold faster than in the benthic‐hyporheic and hyporheic treatments, respectively). 4. Fungal assemblages were generally less diverse in the hyporheic habitat with a few species tending to be relatively favoured by such conditions. Both fungal biomass and sporulation rates were reduced in the hyporheic treatment, with the leaves subject to the benthic‐hyporheic treatment exhibiting an intermediate pattern. The initial 2‐week stage in the benthic habitat shaped the fungal assemblages, even for leaves later subjected to the hyporheic conditions. 5. The abundance and biomass of shredders drastically decreased with burial, except for Leuctra spp., which increased and was by far the most common leaf‐associated taxon in the hyporheic zone. Leuctra spp. was one of the rare shredder taxa displaying morphological characteristics that increased performance within the limited space of sediment interstices. 6. The carbon budgets indicated that the relative contributions of the two main decomposers, shredders and fungi, varied considerably depending on the location within the streambed. While the shredder biomass represented almost 50% of the initial carbon transformed after 80 days in the benthic treatment, its contribution was <0.3% in the hyporheic one and 2.0% in the combined benthic‐hyporheic treatment. In contrast, mycelial and conidial production in the permanently hyporheic environment accounted for 12% of leaf mass loss, i.e. 2–3 times more than in the two other conditions. These results suggest that the role of fungi is particularly important in the hyporheic zone. 7. Our findings indicate that burial within the substratum reduces the litter breakdown rate by limiting the access of both invertebrate and fungal decomposers to leaves. As a consequence, the hyporheic zone may be an important region of organic matter storage in woodland streams and serve as a fungal inoculum reservoir contributing to further dispersal. Through the temporary retention of litter by burial, the hyporheic zone must play a significant role in the carbon metabolism and overall functioning of headwater stream ecosystems.  相似文献

The worldwide distributed house mouse, Mus musculus, is subdivided into at least three lineages, Mus musculus musculus, Mus musculus domesticus, and Mus musculus castaneus. The subspecies occur parapatrically in a region considered to be the cradle of the species in Southern Asia (‘central region’), as well as in the rest of the world (‘peripheral region’). The morphological evolution of this species in a phylogeographical context is studied using a landmark‐based approach on mandible morphology of different populations of the three lineages. The morphological variation increases from central to peripheral regions at the population and subspecific levels, confirming a centrifugal sub‐speciation within this species. Furthermore, the outgroup comparison with sister species suggests that M. musculus musculus and populations of all subspecies inhabiting the Iranian plateau have retained a more ancestral mandible morphology, suggesting that this region may represent one of the relevant places of the origin of the species. Mus musculus castaneus, both from central and peripheral regions, is morphologically the most variable and divergent subspecies. Finally, the results obtained in the present study suggest that the independent evolution to commensalism in the three lineages is not accompanied by a convergence detectable on jaw morphology. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 635–647.  相似文献

Although physical features of the environment are known to influence shape, to date, the effects of many environmental conditions on asymmetry remain unexamined. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between asymmetry and the fluid media (air versus water) that an organism inhabits and, subsequently, to use these findings to test a novel hypothesis that fluid environments can impose selective forces acting to constrain asymmetry to maintain or enhance biomechanical function. We examined carapace asymmetry in 114 species (69 aquatic and 45 terrestrial) from the chelonian superfamily Testudinoidea. The results obtained indicate that environment is correlated with the degree of asymmetry, but in different directions for the two clades that comprise the Testudinoidea. Within the Testuguria, aquatic turtles have lower levels of asymmetry than terrestrial turtles, which is consistent with our proposed biomechanical hypothesis. This pattern was not observed within the Emydidae, possibly due to the much shorter time that terrestrial taxa in this clade have existed. Nevertheless, the present study provides the first evidence for a relationship between fluid media and asymmetry in any taxonomic group.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 483–489.  相似文献

Background

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most frequent pediatric malignant bone tumor. OS patients have not seen any major therapeutic progress in the last 30 years, in particular in the case of metastatic disease, which requires new therapeutic strategies. The pro-apoptotic cytokine Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)–Related Apoptosis Inducing Ligand (TRAIL) can selectively kill tumor cells while sparing normal cells, making it a promising therapeutic tool in several types of cancer. However, many OS cell lines appear resistant to recombinant human (rh)TRAIL-induced apoptosis. We, therefore, hypothesized that TRAIL presentation at the membrane level of carrier cells might overcome this resistance and trigger apoptosis.

Methods

To address this, human adipose mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) transfected in a stable manner to express membrane-bound full-length human TRAIL (mbTRAIL) were co-cultured with several human OS cell lines.

Results

This induced apoptosis by cell-to-cell contact even in cell lines initially resistant to rhTRAIL. In contrast, mbTRAIL delivered by MSCs was not able to counteract tumor progression in this OS orthotopic model.

Discussion

This was partly due to the fact that MSCs showed a potential to support tumor development. Moreover, the expression of mbTRAIL did not show caspase activation in adjacent tumor cells.  相似文献

The carbon balance of a winter wheat crop in Lonzée, Belgium, was assessed from measurements carried out at different spatial and temporal scales between November 2004 and August 2005. From eddy covariance measurements, the net ecosystem exchange was found to be ?0.63 kg C m?2 and resulted from the difference between gross primary productivity (GPP) (?1.58 kg C m?2) and total ecosystem respiration (TER) (0.95 kg C m?2). The impact of the u* threshold value on these fluxes was assessed and found to be very small. GPP assessment was partially validated by comparison with an estimation scaled up from leaf scale assimilation measurements. Soil respiration (SR), extrapolated from chamber measurements, was 0.52 kg C m?2. Net primary productivity, assessed from crop sampling, was ?0.83 kg C m?2. By combining these fluxes, the autotrophic and heterotrophic components of respiration were deduced. Autotrophic respiration dominated both TER and SR. The evolution of these fluxes was analysed in relation to wheat development.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The biology of most invasive species in their native geographical areas remains largely unknown. Such studies are, however, crucial in shedding light on the ecological and evolutionary processes underlying biological invasions. 2. The present study focuses on the little fire ant Wasmannia auropunctata, a species native to Central and South America that has been widely introduced and which has become invasive throughout the tropics. We characterise and compare several ecological traits of native populations in French Guiana with those in one of its introduced ranges, New Caledonia. 3. We found ecologically heterogeneous populations of W. auropunctata coexisting in the species’ native geographical area. First, we found populations restricted to naturally perturbed areas (particularly floodplains) within the primary forest, and absent from the surrounding forest areas. These populations were characterised by low nest and worker densities. Second, we found dominant populations in recent anthropogenic areas (e.g. secondary forest or forest edge along road) characterised by high nest and worker densities, and associated with low ant species richness. The local dominance of W. auropunctata in such areas can be due to the displacement of other species (cause) or the filling‐up of empty habitats unsuitable to other ants (effect). With respect to their demographic features and ant species richness, the populations of native anthropogenic habitats were to a large extent similar to the invasive populations introduced into remote areas. 4. The results point to the need for greater research efforts to better understand the ecological and demographic features of invasive species within their native ranges.  相似文献

Flowering in two clones of Saccharum spontaneum L. is controlledby photoperiod. The earliest stages of development, ‘induction’and ‘initiation of the inflorescence axis primordium’(IAP) were optimally promoted under intermediate days of 12h 30 min, while the subsequent stage ‘initiation of inflorescencebranch primordia’ (IBP) was inhibited by days longer than13 h. The following stage ‘initiation of spikelet primordia’(ISP) showed a quantitatively intermediate response with anoptimum photoperiod of 9 h to 11 h. The elongation of the differentiatedinflorescence was found to be only slightly sensitive to photoperiodsof 13 h or longer in one of the clones. Unfavourable photoperiodsat stages following induction resulted in the arrest or delayof inflorescence development and when these were given duringthe IAP and IBP stages, reversion to the vegetative conditioncommonly occurred.  相似文献
