Complexity Results for Mixed-Model Assembly Lines with Approximation Algorithms for the Single Station Case

Mixed-model assembly lines are becoming increasingly interesting as the use of just-in-time principles in manufacturing continues to expand. This paper presents, for the first time, complexity results for the underlying problem of product sequencing. It is shown that the problem is intractable for both the single station and the multiple station case. Nevertheless, efficient 1.5-approximation algorithms are developed for the early- and late-start models associated with the former case. Empirical results demonstrate that these algorithms perform extremely well in practice.     

The effect of lowered extracellular Na+ concentration on ultraviolet light-induced relaxation of vasoconstricted rabbit isolated thoracic aorta.

The effect of lowering extracellular ion concentration on ultraviolet (UV) light-induced photorelaxation of norepinephrine(NE)-constricted rabbit isolated thoracic aorta was investigated. The magnitude of the photorelaxation response (similar to acetylcholine-induced, but not nitroprusside-induced, relaxation) progressively declined, in the absence of an effect on NE-induced vasoconstriction, as the total extracellular ion concentration was progressively reduced. This diminution in the photorelaxation response was duplicated by isosmotic lowering of the extracellular concentration of Na+, but not other ions, from 145 to 25 mM and was not restored by the replenishment of the Na+ deficiency by equimolar amounts of mannitol or Li+. In contrast, choline fully substituted for Na+. These findings suggest a fundamental difference in the ion dependency (and, hence, the mechanisms) of UV-induced photorelaxation and the vasorelaxations induced by acetylcholine or sodium nitroprusside.

The Evolution of Fruit Tree Productivity: A Review

The Evolution of Fruit Tree Productivity: A Review. Domestication of fruit trees has received far less attention than that of annual crop plants. In particular, very little is known about the evolution of fruit tree productivity. In the wild, most tree species reach reproductive maturity after a long period of juvenility and even then, sexual reproduction appears sporadically, often in a mode of masting. Environmental constraints limit trees’ reproductive activity in their natural, wild habitats, resulting in poor, irregular productivity. Early fructification and regular, high rates of productivity have been selected by people, unconsciously and consciously. The reviewed evidence indicates an evolutionary continuum of productivity patterns among trees of wild habitats, intermediary domesticates, and the most advanced domesticates. Alternate bearing appears to represent an intermediate step in the fruit tree evolutionary pathway. The existence of a molecular, genetic mechanism that controls trees’ sexual reproduction and fruiting pattern is suggested.     

Effects of cytoprotective antioxidants on lymphocytes from representative mitochondrial neurodegenerative diseases

Two new aza analogues of the neuroprotective agent idebenone have been synthesized and characterized. Their antioxidant activity, and ability to augment ATP levels have been evaluated in several different cell lines having suboptimal mitochondrial function. Both compounds were found to be good ROS scavengers, and to protect the cells from oxidative stress induced by glutathione depletion. The compounds were more effective than idebenone in neurodegenerative disease cells. These novel pyrimidinol derivatives were also shown to augment ATP levels in coenzyme Q₁₀-deficient human lymphocytes. The more lipophilic side chains attached to the pyrimidinol redox core in these compounds resulted in less inhibition of the electron transport chain and improved antioxidant activity.
