Occurrence of grapevine chrome mosaic nepovirus in Austria

A virus recovered by inoculation of sap from Austrian vines with yellow mosaic symptoms was compared with, and found virtually indistinguishable from, an authentic Hungarian isolate of grapevine chrome mosaic nepovirus. This seems to be the first record of the virus in Austria.     

WFS1 and non-syndromic low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss: A novel mutation in a Portuguese case

Low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (LFSNHL) is an unusual type of HL in which frequencies at 2000 Hz and below are predominantly affected. Most of the families with LFSNHL carry missense mutations in WFS1 gene, coding for wolframin.     

Dimer–monomer equilibrium of human thymidylate synthase monitored by fluorescence resonance energy transfer

An ad hoc bioconjugation/fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assay has been designed to spectroscopically monitor the quaternary state of human thymidylate synthase dimeric protein. The approach enables the chemoselective engineering of allosteric residues while preserving the native protein functions through reversible masking of residues within the catalytic site, and is therefore suitable for activity/oligomerization dual assay screenings. It is applied to tag the two subunits of human thymidylate synthase at cysteines 43 and 43′ with an excitation energy donor/acceptor pair. The dimer–monomer equilibrium of the enzyme is then characterized through steady‐state fluorescence determination of the intersubunit resonance energy transfer efficiency.     

Spectroscopic and structural analyses of the copper(II) 2-D coordination polymer {[Cu2(BPP)4(NCS)4]}n (BPP = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane) comprising interpenetrated layers of (4, 4) topology

The synthesis and structural characterization of the 2-D Cu(II) coordination polymer namely {[Cu₂(BPP)₄(NCS)₄]}_n, where BPP is the nitrogen ligand 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane, are described. Single crystal diffraction analysis shows that the asymmetric unit consists on two crystallographically independent Cu(II) ions that adopt a distorted octahedral geometry. Each Cu(II) center is coordinated by four nitrogen atoms from different BPP ligands and by other two nitrogen atoms from isothiocyanate groups. The BPP ligands link the metal centers generating an undulated two-dimensional net of (4, 4) topology. Two sets of two-dimensional sheets interlock each other in the same plane, giving rise to a twofold parallel interpenetrating network. EPR spectra indicate no magnetic coupling of the two individual Cu²⁺ centers.
