Zinc Prevents Sickness Behavior Induced by Lipopolysaccharides after a Stress Challenge in Rats

Sickness behavior is considered part of the specific beneficial adaptive behavioral and neuroimmune changes that occur in individuals in response to infectious/inflammatory processes. However, in dangerous and stressful situations, sickness behavior should be momentarily abrogated to prioritize survival behaviors, such as fight or flight. Taking this assumption into account, we experimentally induced sickness behavior in rats using lipopolysaccharides (LPS), an endotoxin that mimics infection by gram-negative bacteria, and then exposed these rats to a restraint stress challenge. Zinc has been shown to play a regulatory role in the immune and nervous systems. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the effects of zinc treatment on the sickness response of stress-challenged rats. We evaluated 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations, open-field behavior, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), corticosterone, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plasma levels. LPS administration induced sickness behavior in rats compared to controls, i.e., decreases in the distance traveled, average velocity, rearing frequency, self-grooming, and number of vocalizations, as well as an increase in the plasma levels of TNF-α, compared with controls after a stressor challenge. LPS also decreased BDNF expression but did not influence anxiety parameters. Zinc treatment was able to prevent sickness behavior in LPS-exposed rats after the stress challenge, restoring exploratory/motor behaviors, communication, and TNF-α levels similar to those of the control group. Thus, zinc treatment appears to be beneficial for sick animals when they are facing risky/stressful situations.     

Selective enzymatic hydrolysis of aromatic diesters using esterase from Brevibacterium imperiale B222

Summary A practical procedure has been developed for the chemoselective microbial hydrolysis of aromatic dicarboxylic esters to give the corresponding monoesters, using cellular lysate and whole cell of Brevibacterium imperiale B222. The produced monoesters can be transformed into hydroxyacids, useful intermediates in the synthesis of polyesters.     

D8S7 is consistently deleted in inverted duplications of the short arm of chromosome 8 (inv dup 8p)

Ten patients with inverted duplication of 8p (inv dup 8p) were studied with cytogenetic, biochemical and molecular techniques. The duplication for the region 8p12-p22 was always associated with a deletion of the locus D8S7 (mapped in 8p23.1) as demonstrated with the probe pSW50 by both in situ hybridization and Southern blot. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms detected by probes pSW50 (1 case) and by pG2LPL35 (locus LPL) (two cases) were informative as to a maternal origin of the anomaly. The activity of glutathione reductase, whose gene maps in the duplicated region at 8p21.1, was increased in all patients. The recognizable phenotype of inv dup 8p includes neonatal hypotonia, prominent forehead, large mouth with everted lower lip, abnormally shaped large ears, brain malformations and severe mental retardation. Our findings indicate that the chromosome rearrangement is homogeneous at least for the presence of the deletion and support the hypothesis of a common mechanism of origin.

The existence of an Early Gravettian perforated human tooth at the abri Pataud came to light thanks to the reexamination of the osseous artefacts from the level 5. Even if the method of perforation of this tooth is analogous to the one used to pierce the animal teeth discovered in the same level, this pendant would have a particular meaning.
