1. Population dynamics and interactions that vary over a species' range are of particular importance in the context of latitudinal clines in biological diversity. Winter moth (Operophtera brumata) and autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) are two species of eruptive geometrids that vary widely in outbreak tendency over their range, which generally increases from south to north and with elevation. 2. The predation pressure on geometrid larvae and pupae over an elevational gradient was tested. The effects of background larval density and bird occupancy of monitoring nest boxes on predation rates were also tested. Predation on larvae was tested through exclusion treatments at 20 replicate stations over four elevations at one site, while pupae were set out to measure predation at two elevations at three sites. 3. Larval densities were reduced by bird predation at three lower elevations, but not at the highest elevation, and predation rates were 1.9 times higher at the lowest elevation than at the highest elevation. The rate of predation on larvae was not related to background larval density or nest box occupancy, although there were more eggs and chicks at the lowest elevation. There were no consistent differences in predation on pupae by elevation. 4. These results suggest that elevational variation in avian predation pressure on larvae may help to drive elevational differences in outbreak tendency, and that birds may play a more important role in geometrid population dynamics than the focus on invertebrate and soil predators of previous work would suggest. 相似文献

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterised by tumours of the parathyroids,
pancreas and anterior pituitary. The MEN1 gene has been localised to a 2-Mb region of chromosome 11q13 by meiotic mapping
studies in MEN1 families. Such studies may have a limited resolution of approximately 1 cM (i.e. 1 Mb) and we have therefore
investigated 96 MEN1 families (40 British, 17 French, 12 Finnish, 7 Swedish, 7 Dutch, 7 North American, 2 Australian, 1 New
Zealand, 1 German, 1 Spanish and 1 Danish) for linkage disequilibrium, in order to facilitate a finer mapping resolution.
We have utilised five microsatellite DNA sequence polymorphisms from the candidate region and have accurately determined their
allele sizes, which ranged from 161 bp to 272 bp. The heterozygosity and number of alleles (given in brackets), respectively,
at the loci were: D11S1883 (76%, 11), D11S457 (55%, 5), PYGM (94%, 18), D11S1783 (10%, 4) and D11S449 (87%, 16). Allelic association
was assessed by Chi-square 2 ×n contingency tables, by Fisher exact 2 ×n contingency tables and by a likelihood-based approach. The results of haplotype analysis revealed 91 different affected haplotypes
in the 96 families, an identical affected haplotype being observed in no more than two families. These results indicate the
absence of an ancestral affected haplotype. Significant linkage disequilibrium (P < 0.005) could be established amongst the microsatellite loci but not between the loci and MEN1 in either the total population
or in any of the geographical sub-populations. The absence of linkage disequilibrium between MEN1 and the polymorphic loci
is probably the result of the occurrence of multiple different disease-causing mutations in MEN1.

Previous work has demonstrated that catecholamine-containing cells differentiate preferentially from populations of quail trunk neural crest cells isolated by cell sorting using the HNK-1 antibody (Maxwell, Forbes, and Christie, 1988). In the present work, we examine several additional features of the differentiation of these sorted cell populations. As one part of this study, the development of subpopulations of the HNK-(1+)-sorted neural crest cells has been investigated. Twice as many catecholamine-positive and total cells developed from the brightest third of the HNK-1+ cells compared to the remaining HNK-1+ cells, but the proportion of catecholamine-containing cells was similar in both populations. When either of these HNK-1+ subpopulations were grown together with HNK-1- cells, no reduction in the number of adrenergic cells was observed. These results indicate that subpopulations of HNK-1+ cells are qualitatively similar and that their adrenergic development is not affected by HNK-1- cells. In the second part of this study, we investigate the specificity of differentiation of HNK-(1+)- and HNK-(1-)-sorted cells by examining several additional phenotypic markers of development. We found that tyrosine hydroxylase and somatostatin immunoreactive cells developed from the HNK-(1+)-sorted population, while few, if any, cells bearing these phenotypic markers appeared in the HNK-(1-)-sorted population. In marked contrast, substantial numbers of cells immunoreactive for A2B5, E/C8, and NF-160 differentiated from both the HNK-(1+)- and the HNK-(1-)-sorted cell populations. The A2B5, E/C8, and NF-160 immunoreactive cells exhibited a variety of morphologies ranging from nonneuronal to neuronal in both sorted populations. Taken together, these results indicate that the presence of the HNK-1 antigen(s) on the trunk neural crest cell surface at 2 days in vitro is rather tightly correlated with the differentiation of adrenergic and some peptidergic cells, but much less so with other classes of neural cells including A2B5, E/C8, and NF-160 immunoreactive cells. Thus, these findings support the view that cell surface differences are correlated with and may contribute to the generation of the phenotypic diversity of neural crest cell derivatives. 相似文献

Abstract. The present experiments are part of a larger study designed to investigate the influence of husbandry parameters on the life history of the ramshorn snail, Marisa cornuarietis, in order to identify suitable husbandry conditions for maintaining multi‐generation populations in the laboratory for use in ecotoxicological testing. In this paper we focus on the effects of a combination of food types and feeding frequencies (i.e., the frequency with which the snails were offered food) on juvenile growth and survival at different temperatures. Offspring produced in the laboratory by wild specimens of M. cornuarietis, from Puerto Rico, were used to test the effects of three types of food (lettuce, alginate with fish food, alginate with snail mix) fed at three frequencies (given ad libitum on 4/4, 2/4, or 1/4 d) on juvenile survival and growth. The 4‐d feeding regimens were repeated four times, giving a total of 16 d for the experiments. The experiments were conducted at two temperatures (22° and 25°C) under a 12 h light:12 h dark photoperiod. Juvenile growth rates increased with increasing feeding frequency for all food types. The most rapid growth rates occurred in the high‐frequency lettuce treatments and the slowest growth rates in the low‐frequency lettuce and alginate with snail mix treatments. Juvenile snails grew faster at 25° than at 22°C, and mortality was about twice as high at the lower temperature. Growth rates were used to provide a rough estimate of time to maturity, which was determined to take about twice as long at 22° than at 25°C. The results showed that lettuce is the best food if supplied in abundance, but effects on growth are very dependent on feeding frequency and temperature. We conclude that 25°C is a more appropriate temperature for maintaining populations than 22°C, that lettuce provides a suitable food source, and that food should be supplied continuously for husbandry and toxicity testing of populations of M. cornuarietis. 相似文献
