Postcopulatory sexual selection is widely accepted to underlie the extraordinary diversification of sperm morphology. However, why does it favour longer sperm in some taxa but shorter in others? Two recent hypotheses addressing this discrepancy offered contradictory explanations. Under the sperm dilution hypothesis, selection via sperm density in the female reproductive tract favours more but smaller sperm in large, but the reverse in small, species. Conversely, the metabolic constraint hypothesis maintains that ejaculates respond positively to selection in small endothermic animals with high metabolic rates, whereas low metabolic rates constrain their evolution in large species. Here, we resolve this debate by capitalizing on the substantial variation in mammalian body size and reproductive physiology. Evolutionary responses shifted from sperm length to number with increasing mammalian body size, thus supporting the sperm dilution hypothesis. Our findings demonstrate that body-size-mediated trade-offs between sperm size and number can explain the extreme diversification in sperm phenotypes. 相似文献

Background
Introductions of non-native tiger salamanders into the range of California tiger salamanders have provided a rare opportunity to study the early stages of secondary contact and hybridization. We produced first- and second-generation hybrid salamanders in the lab and measured viability among these early-generation hybrid crosses to determine the strength of the initial barrier to gene exchange. We also created contemporary-generation hybrids in the lab and evaluated the extent to which selection has affected fitness over approximately 20 generations of admixture. Employing the techniques of in-vitro lymphocyte transformation (LTF) and using Putnam strain of rubella virus as the antigen, the development of rubella specific cellular immune response was studied in different age groups of rubella seronegative normal subjects at various intervals after subcutaneous administration of HPV=77/DE5 live attenuated rubella vaccine. The rubella specific lymphocyte response in children ranging in age from two to twelve years was characterized by significant LTF activity at two months, followed by a gradual decrease. The response in adult subjects 18 to 35 years of age showed a slight delay initially in the appearance and the maximum LTF activity appeared to be 3--4 fold lower (P less than 0.01) than observed in the children. No difference was observed in the maximum antibody titers to rubella virus between these two groups of subjects. These observations suggest that the age related differences in the lymphoproliferative responses might be associated with adverse effects which are known to occur more frequently in adolescent and older patients than in childhood population after vaccine induced rubella infection. 相似文献

The relationship between the strontium content of the outer layers of otoliths (an indication of recent marine, estuarine or riverine habitat use) and the strontium content of roe in ripe female brown trout Salmo trutta was examined in fish collected from the Pomahaka River and the lower reaches of the Clutha River, South Island, New Zealand. A close relationship was found between the strontium content of roe and the outer layers of otoliths. 14,15-Leukotriene A4 is a pivotal biosynthetic intermediate in 15-lipoxygenase initiated leukotriene biosynthesis. This compound hydrolyzes instantaneously in phosphate buffer at pH 7.4. However, addition of human or bovine albumin to otherwise identical buffer solutions increases its stability. Intact 14,15-leukotriene A4 then decomposes by first-order kinetics with rate constants inversely proportional to the albumin concentration.
