Background  

Breast milk is an important source of staphylococci and other bacterial groups to the infant gut. The objective of this work was to analyse the bacterial diversity in feces of breast-fed infants and to compare it with that of formula-fed ones. A total of 23 women and their respective infants (16 breast-fed and 7 formula-fed) participated in the study. The 16 women and their infants provided a sample of breast milk and feces, respectively, at days 7, 14, and 35. The samples were plated onto different culture media. Staphylococcal and enterococcal isolates were submitted to genetic profiling and to a characterization scheme, including detection of potential virulence traits and sensitivity to antibiotics.  相似文献

In vitro cultured bone cells were found to be responsive to hormones and physical forces. A simple device has been developed which enables the direct application of physical forces to tissue culture dishes to which cells are firmly attached. The physical forces created a deformation of the dish. It was found that prostaglandin E2 synthesis underwent a rapid increase, reaching a maximum after 20 min and then declined. Concurrent with the increase in prostaglandin E2 was an increase in cyclic AMP production, having a maximum around 15 min. The increase in cyclic AMP was blocked by indomethacin, the prostaglandin E2 synthesis inhibitor, indicating the dependence of cyclic AMP production on the de novo synthesis of prostaglandin E2. Prostaglandin E2 added to cells mimicked the effect of physical forces on the production of cyclic AMP. The increase in cyclic AMP resulted from an early rise in adenyl cyclase activity (within 5 min) and a later (10 min) increase in phosphodiesterase activity. The same physical forces also stimulatedthe incorporation of thymidine into DNA after 24 h. On addition of prostaglandin E2 the increase in DNA synthesis was also mimicked. Pretreatment of the cells with indomethacin abolished the effect of physical forces on DNA synthesis.The results suggest a stimulus receptor mechanism for physical forces which, like hormonal effectors, are mediated by prostaglandins and stimulate cyclic AMP and DNA synthesis.We believe that physical forces stimulate bone remodelling through such a stimulus receptor system, mediated by prostaglandins.  相似文献

The link between oncogenesis and normal development is well illustrated by the study of the Wnt family of proteins. The first Wnt gene (int-1) was identified over a decade ago as a proto-oncogene, activated in response to proviral insertion of a mouse mammary tumor virus. Subsequently, the discovery that Drosophila wingless, a developmentally important gene, is homologous to int-1 supported the notion that int-1 may have a role in normal development. In the last few years it has been recognized that int-1 and Wingless belong to a large family of related glyco-proteins found in vertebrates and invertebrates. In recognition of this, members of this family have been renamed Wnts, an amalgam of int and Wingless. Investigation of Wnt genes in Xenopus and mouse indicates that Wnts have a role in cell proliferation, differentiation and body axis formation. Further analysis in Drosophila has revealed that Wingless function is required in several developmental processes in the embryo and imaginal discs. In addition, a genetic approach has identified some of the molecules required for the transmission and reception of the Wingless signal. We will review recent data which have contributed to our growing understanding of the function and mechanism of Drosophila Wingless signaling in cell fate determination, growth and specification of pattern.  相似文献

Food subsidies have the potential to modify ecosystems and affect the provision of goods and services. Predictable Anthropogenic Food Subsidies (PAFS) modify ecosystems by altering ecological processes and food webs. The global concern over the effects of PAFS in ecosystems has led to development of environmental policies aimed at curbing the production or ultimately banning of PAFS. However, the effects of reducing or banning PAFS are not known. We explore the consequences of PAFS removal in a marine ecosystem under two scenarios: 1) gradual reduction, or 2) an abrupt ban, using a mass balance model to test these hypotheses–The reduction or loss of PAFS will: i) modify trophic levels and food webs through effects on foraging by opportunistic species, ii) increase the resilience of opportunistic species to food shortages, and iii) modify predator–prey interactions through shifts in prey consumption. We found that PAFS lower the trophic levels of opportunistic scavengers and increase their food pathways. Scavengers are able to switch prey when PAFS are reduced gradually but they decline when PAFS are abruptly banned. PAFS reduction to a certain minimal level causes a drop in the ecosystem’s stability. We recommend gradual reduction of PAFS to a minimal level that would maintain the ecosystem’s stability and allow species exploiting PAFS to habituate to the food subsidy reduction.  相似文献

The feeding of young by parents was observed in three color-banded families of wild Mexican jays. The development of indiscriminate feeding of each other's young by the parents began well before the young left the nest. These observations suggest that reciprocal feeding is not an accident and that it might be more beneficial than exclusive feeding of own young for parent Mexican Jays. The membership hypothesis and the helper-resource hypothesis are proposed as possible explanations.  相似文献
