Mechanism of action of N-acetylglucosaminyl-N-acetylmuramylalanyl-D-isoglutamine on the nonspecific anti-infection resistance of mice

The stimulating influence of glucose-containing muramyldipeptide (GMDP) on the nonspecific resistance of mice was shown to depend on the features of the pathogenesis of the infection. Thus, the intraperitoneal injection of GMDP increased the survival rate of mice infected with Escherichia coli, but had no stimulating effect on the resistance of the animals to Salmonella typhimurium natural infection in whose pathogenesis macrophages played an essential role. Experiments demonstrated that GMDP was capable of enhancing the ingestive function of macrophages, but did not increase their bactericidal activity with respect to this infection.     

Nonspecific and antigen-specific adhesiveness of circulating lymphocytes in dysentery patients undergoing combined therapy using thymalin and indomethacin

Nonspecific adhesiveness of lymphocytes to polyacrylonitrile fiber and the antigen-specific adhesiveness of T-lymphocytes to Shigella flexneri pellicular immunosorbent have been studied in dysentery patients. Short courses of treatment with indomethacin, but not with thymalin (the preparation of thymic hormones), used for immunomodulation, have accelerated the normalization of nonspecific lymphocyte adhesiveness during regression of the disease, while indomethacin, in contrast to thymalin, inhibits antigen-specific T-lymphocyte adhesiveness which increases with the development of immune response.     

Properties of the isolated Bacillus subtilis strains and their influence on the intestinal microflora of experimental mice

The cultural, physiologo-biochemical adhesive and antagonistic properties of B. subtilis strains with good prospects for use as biotherapeutic preparations were studied. For further studies B. subtilis strain No. 1719 was chosen. In experiments on non-inbred white mice the animals were treated by the preparation Cifran used for their selective decontamination from opportunistic microflora and for the creation of the state of dysbiosis. The influence of the spore-forming microbe on the parietal microflora of the large intestine of the animals was shown. Reliable data on the changes in the number of microorganisms (CFU/ml) per 1 cm of the surface of the large intestine were established. As markers making it possible to evaluate the action of biotherapeutic and other medicinal remedies, easily determinable ratios of lac+/lac- of bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus/Staphylococcus spp. was proposed.     

Specific characteristics of composition of synthetic nutrient media for cultivation of Hemophilus influenzae type b from the standpoint of bacterial metabolism

In many countries vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae of type b (Hib) has permitted the liquidation of severe generalized forms of infections caused by these bacteria. The vaccine is obtained on the basis of Hib capsular polysaccharide. To obtain pure capsular polysaccharide, Hib should be cultivated on synthetic nutrient media. The present review deals with the data substantiating the advantages of using synthetic nutrient media for the cultivation of these bacteria with a view to obtaining pure capsular polysaccharide.     

The natural background of chromosome anomalies in the bone marrow cells of mice and the control of vaccines for genotoxicity

The levels of chromosomal anomalies in marrow cells of mice kept under conventional conditions in the animal house of the Mechnikov Research Institute for Vaccines and Sera (Moscow) and under specific pathogen-free conditions were compared by the micronuclear and metaphasic methods. In the animals kept under specific pathogen-free conditions the occurrence of anomalies did not exceed the normal level; in the animals of the other group the level of cells with aberrations was 4-5 times higher. All detected aberrations in the chromosomal structure were unstable. The results obtained in this investigation indicate that under the conventional conditions existing in the animal house of a microbiological research institute mitogens of the biological nature may be present.
