Δ7-5-Desaturase catalyses one of the last steps in ergosterol biosynthesis in fungi. Moreover Δ5-unsaturation is necessary for the sparking function. Synthesis of three pairs of C-6 epimeric cholestanol derivatives are described as potential growth inhibitors. Camera trapping studies have become increasingly popular to produce population estimates of individually recognisable mammals. Yet, monitoring techniques for rare species which occur at extremely low densities are lacking. Additionally, species which have unpredictable movements may make obtaining reliable population estimates challenging due to low detectability. Our study explores the effectiveness of intensive camera trapping for estimating cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) numbers. Using both a more traditional, systematic grid approach and pre-determined, targeted sites for camera placement, the cheetah population of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, Botswana was sampled between December 2012 and October 2013. Placement of cameras in a regular grid pattern yielded very few (n = 9) cheetah images and these were insufficient to estimate cheetah density. However, pre-selected cheetah scent-marking posts provided 53 images of seven adult cheetahs (0.61 ± 0.18 cheetahs/100km²). While increasing the length of the camera trapping survey from 90 to 130 days increased the total number of cheetah images obtained (from 53 to 200), no new individuals were recorded and the estimated population density remained stable. Thus, our study demonstrates that targeted camera placement (irrespective of survey duration) is necessary for reliably assessing cheetah densities where populations are naturally very low or dominated by transient individuals. Significantly our approach can easily be applied to other rare predator species.  相似文献

Mangoes (Mangifera indica) are grown in many warm regions of the world; for example, in Australia, Brazil, India, South America, and the United States (California and Florida), and along the shores of the Mediterranean sea (Egypt, Italy, and Spain). In Egypt, many varieties yielding delicious fruits are grown in large quantities (50,000 tons annually). Mango kernels are used for feeding mammals and chickens. Summary The influence of total nitrification to nitrate or partial nitrification to nitrite on the soil organic nitrogen status was examined. NH 4 +15N was added to the soil in the absence and the presence of NaClO3, respectively nitrapyrin. The first chemical inhibits only nitrate formation, the second inhibits total nitrification. The accumulation of nitrite nitrogen in the soil at levels up to 5 mg kg–1 increased the loss of nitrogen. Yet, it did not increase the binding of mineral nitrogen into soil organic matter, relative to the control soil. The data suggest that the biochemistry of the nitrite formation process, rather than the levels of nitrite ions formed, are of primary importance in the role of nitrification mediated nitrosation of soil organic matter.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of static magnetic fields (SMF) on reactive oxygen species induced by X‐ray radiation. The experiments were performed on lymphocytes from male albino Wistar rats. After exposure to 3 Gy X‐ray radiation (with a dose rate of 560 mGy/min) the measurement of intracellular reactive oxygen species in lymphocytes, using a fluorescent probe, was done before exposure to the SMF, and after 15 min, 1 and 2 h of exposure to the SMF or a corresponding incubation time. For SMF exposure, 0 mT (50 µT magnetic field induction opposite to the geomagnetic field) and 5 mT fields were chosen. The trend of SMF effects for 0 mT was always opposite that of 5 mT. Spindles - a hallmark of stage II sleep - are a transient oscillatory phenomenon in the EEG believed to reflect thalamocortical activity contributing to unresponsiveness during sleep. Currently spindles are often classified into two classes: fast spindles, with a frequency of around 14 Hz, occurring in the centro-parietal region; and slow spindles, with a frequency of around 12 Hz, prevalent in the frontal region. Here we aim to establish whether the spindle generation process also exhibits spatial heterogeneity. Electroencephalographic recordings from 20 subjects were automatically scanned to detect spindles and the time occurrences of spindles were used for statistical analysis. Gamma distribution parameters were fit to each inter-spindle interval distribution, and a modified Wald-Wolfowitz lag-1 correlation test was applied. Results indicate that not all spindles are generated by the same statistical process, but this dissociation is not spindle-type specific. Although this dissociation is not topographically specific, a single generator for all spindle types appears unlikely.  相似文献

The flux through branched-chain alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenase and the activity of the branched-chain alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenase complex were measured in hepatocytes isolated from fed, starved and alloxan diabetic rats. The highest rate of branched-chain alpha-ketoacid oxidation was found in hepatocytes isolated from starved rats, slightly lower in those from fed rats, and significantly lower in diabetic hepatocytes. The amount of the active form of branched-chain alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenase was only slightly diminished in diabetic hepatocytes, whereas the flux through the dehydrogenase was inversely correlated with the rate of endogenous ketogenesis. The same was observed in hepatocytes isolated from starved rats when branched-chain alpha-ketoacid oxidation was measured in the presence of added oleate. In both cases the diminished flux through the dehydrogenase, restored by a short preincubation of hepatocytes with insulin, was paralleled by a decrease of fatty acid-derived ketogenesis. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the role of insulin in branched-chain alpha-ketoacid oxidation in liver of diabetic rats.  相似文献

1- O -(indole-3-acetyl)- β - d -glucose: myo -inositol indoleacetyl transferase (IA- myo -inositol synthase) is an important enzyme in IAA metabolism. This enzyme catalyses the transfer of the indole acetyl (IA) moiety from 1- O -(indole-3-acetyl)- β - d -glucose to myo -inositol to form IA- myo- inositol and glucose. IA- myo -inositol synthase was purified to an electrophoretically homogenous state from maize liquid endosperm by fractionation with ammonium sulphate, anion-exchange, adsorption on hydroxylapatite, affinity chromatography on ConA-Sepharose, preparative PAGE and isoelectric focusing. We thus obtained two enzyme preparations which differ in their R f on 8% polyacrylamide gel. The preparation of R f 0.36 contained a single 56.4 kDa polypeptide, whereas the preparation of R f 0.39 consisted of two polypeptides of 56.4 and 53.5 kDa. Both purified preparations of IAInos synthase also exhibited the activity of an IAInos hydrolase, showing that the dual activity was associated with a single protein. Results of gel filtration and analytical SDS-PAGE suggest that the native enzyme exists as both a monomeric (65 kDa) and homo- or heterodimeric form (110–130 kDa). Analysis of peptide maps and amino acid sequences of two 21 amino-acid peptides showed that polypeptides of 56.4 and 53.5 kDa have the same primary structure and that the 3 kDa difference in molecular mass is probably caused by different glycosylation levels. Comparison of this partial and internal amino acid sequence with sequences of other plant acyltransferases indicated similarity to several proteins which belonged to the serine carboxypeptidase-like (SCPL) acyltransferase family.  相似文献
